View Larger The Bottom Line Other Business Features Local Stories from ThisWeek More Articles By Steve Wartenberg The Columbus Dispatch Sunday May 18, 2014 11:10 AM
Like many other high-school students, Alyssa Cuzzolini didnt think of the construction industry as a career path.
I didnt know anything about it, she said.
Then she went to a meeting of the local chapter of the ACE Mentor Program while attending Columbus Downtown High School & Career Center. ACE stands for architecture, construction and engineering.
The goal is to get students to look at the construction industry as an option, said Brian Moran, chairman of the local ACE chapter and a project executive with the Columbus office of Turner Construction.
Its also a goal that has become increasingly urgent as the industry faces a growing worker shortage, especially as construction work rebounds from the recession.
Moran and others in the construction industry hope to increase the number of high school and college students involved in mentoring, vocational and apprentice programs.
Were not seeing anywhere near the number of young people entering the industry as we need, said James Smith, CEO of Elford, a Columbus-based construction company. It hasnt really affected us yet, since were not seeing the volume of work we did 10 or 12 years ago, but we could soon."
In other words, Cuzzolini, 21, probably wont have a tough time finding a job.
She completed the ACE program while in high school; she graduated in 2012. She is majoring in electrical engineering at Ohio Northern University and will spend the summer as an intern at HAWA Inc., a Columbus engineering firm.

BLUEWELL A large, metal Buffalo sign flanked by well-landscaped flowers greets visitors at the intersection of Lorton Lick Road and a steep drive to the right. Its the entrance to the regions newest all-terrain vehicle resort one four years in the making.
Topping the hill, brand-new wood and stone cabins greet the eye. To the right is an elegant restaurant accented by a waterfall, koi pond and large outdoor dining area. To the left are cabins that have rustic appeal with the most modern of amenities.
Welcome to Buffalo Trail an ATV resort that incorporates the atmosphere of camping with the luxury of a nice restaurant, bar, craft beers and, of course, site-wide Wifi.
Buffalo Trail is a family affair that connects to a five-generation farm that has prospered in the greater Bluewell area for decades. The site of the resort where the old Bluewell Manor apartments used to sit ties in with the Peters family Briarfield Farm where buffalo are raised.
Owner and General Manager Seth Peters initially moved away from southern West Virginia but came back to the area eight years ago. His dream for the Buffalo Trail lodging is to cater to ATV tourists. However, he hopes the restaurant will be a draw for both locals and tourists.
Were marketing to ATV riders, but certainly not limited to ATVs, Peters said, noting they have already been approached about weddings, family reunions and other events.
Peters comes to the resort/restaurant business with an impressive pedigree. He is the owner of a mechanical contracting business in North Carolina that specializes in remodels for national restaurant chains.
This (Buffalo Trail) is my hobby job, he said.

Property: 5340 S. Washington Ave., Lansing Owner: Patricia and Racine Villarreal Assessed value: $33,900 Owner says: Cant afford taxes, plans to let it go to auction next year
As is too often true of old buildings, this home has been covered with synthetic siding. Such work is ostensibly performed as a maintenance reduction or energy-saving effort. However, when undertaken, the exterior is frequently stripped of any details that project from its elevations. Once all facades are flat and featureless, it is easier to apply the replacement siding. Unfortunately, this treatment usually leaves the building devoid of any character-defining detail. Even the casing trim around the windows has been obscured.
Several of the boarded windows are curiously adorned with a single shutter, though the telltale ghosts of their former mates still read on the faded siding. A Chinoiserie panel that once served as a railing now lies in a heap with the collapsed front-porch roof. Untended plants surround the site and cling to the building.
Even the church located immediately to the south cannot help feeling the deleterious image this abandoned structure projects to the surrounding neighborhood. After stabilizing the building, restoration efforts should begin with the removal of the invasive plants, and then focus on elements that significantly affect the buildings curb appeal. Perhaps some lost detail might be discovered under the tired cement siding.
