MURFREESBORO, TN (WSMV) -
Home security systems are meant to help people feel safe in their own houses. But some scam artists are using that sense of protection to their advantage.
The sticker in your window or sign in your front yard from a security company may be an open invitation to thieves.
Brentmeade Subdivision homeowner Dena Crowder says she has door-to-door security alarm system salesmen who keep coming back to her home.
"We said, 'No,' but they continue to talk. So I had to close the door on them," Crowder said.
Crowder said the men travel in packs and have been canvassing the neighborhood.
"There have been three different groups that have come through here for security systems," Crowder said.
She didn't bite on the pitch. She's already learned her lesson on that.
"I have fallen victim before on credit card scams, where people take money out of your account," Crowder said.
But several people in Murfreesboro fell for it after salesmen for a group called AMP Security, out of Utah, misrepresented themselves as Honeywell Security or ADT, according to neighbors.

KINGSPORT, Tenn. -
Police in Kingsport are building a case against a serial stalker who has been harassing his victims since 2006.
Sargent Steve Hammonds, one of the investigators looking into the stalker, told News 5 they expect to have more than 100 victims, but they only began to recently tie these cases together.
"They've recently come to light based on new technology we have. New instant reporting software has given us the capability to do searches that were never before possible, so we've been able to link a lot of these stalking reports together over one suspect," explained Kingsport Police Department Public Information Officer Tom Patton.
Patton said those cases extend to Sullivan County and out of state. Police aren't releasing much information about the suspect, other than it's a man who claims to offer handyman services. He has a lengthy arrest record that spans multiple states. "We are deliberately withholding his name, as well as any description. He has a fictitious handyman business he operates under, and we are withholding that company's name as well," said Patton.
They hope that withholding this information will lead to more people coming forward with uninfluenced testimony.
More victims means a higher probability of a successful prosecution. "He'll initially approach them under the guise or ruse of being a handyman. From there he just won't stop. Even if they tell him no, he will keep coming around. Or if they are initially nice to him, they just can't get rid of him from that point forward. And then it will evolve into other crimes," Patton said.
Patton said there is evidence that serial stalker has even been involved in multiple burglaries and is deliberate in selecting his victims."It looks like he's looking at newspaper obituaries, possibly online obituaries. He's seeking out recently-widowed females, " Patton told News 5.
Patton also told News 5 that you do want to be cautious of anyone going door-to-door offering to work. He said a trustworthy contractor is usually so busy they don't need to solicit business.
The Kingsport Police Department hopes to release more information about the suspect in the coming days.

Highway work to cease for holiday weekend
ITD reports no construction allowed May 23-26
By TERRY SMITH Express Staff Writer
Travelers will get a break from construction on state Highway 75 south of Ketchum for the Memorial Day weekend. The Idaho Transportation Department announced Wednesday that work on a 3.25-mile section of the highway will be suspended Friday, May 23, through Monday, May 26. The work suspension was announced in a construction update provided to public officials and the news media every other week by ITD spokesman Nathan Jerke. According to the update, construction contractor Idaho Sand & Gravel continued this week working to complete the entire southbound alignment, with most of the work occurring from Hospital Drive north to the end of the project near the bridge over the Big Wood River. The work also includes installation of curb and gutter. Paving is expected to start on Monday, May 19. ITD expects paving of the southbound lanes to be completed by Thursday, May 22. However, the agency noted that weather or other complications may delay the work. ITD intends to have all traffic switched to the southbound lanes north of Hospital Drive once paving is completed. Work under way also includes completion of the rock faade on the retaining wall near Owl Creek Road, milling of the old roadway on the east side of the highway and continuation of storm drain pipe and infiltration pond placement. Utility work will continue at various locations within the construction zone. ITD reminds drivers to use extreme caution when traveling through the construction zone and to slow down and watch for flaggers, slow traffic and construction vehicles entering and exiting the highway. When completed, the project, started in 2013, will provide two lanes in each direction from Timber Way just north of East Fork Road to the bridge over the Big Wood River near St. Lukes hospital.

Spring is finally here! Youve been waiting for months to get outdoors and enjoy a nice spring day. Now that you have, you probably realize youve got some work to do, and not the enjoyable kind of spring yard work like planting flowers or building a cool backyard water feature.
This work is not as fun. Its cleaning gutters full of fall leaves, touching up spots where paints peeling, replacing loose or rotted boards on your deck, etc. It may try your patience but its just as important as blooming flowers if you want to keep your house looking nice.
Making a list
To make the work easier, start by creating a to-do list. Walk around the exterior of your home and inspect anything that might need to be repaired or replaced. Record these items and give them a priority rating so you know what you have to get done first.
A few things to look for:
Peeling paint
Loose gutter nails
Rotting trim
Loose porch rails
Rusty or otherwise damaged doors

This week I answer questions from readers: Q. I have this horrible weed/flower invading the grass in my front yard. It had little blue flowers in early spring. It has spread through about half my yard. How do I get rid of it? A. You have violets in your lawn - and violets are hard to eradicate. I don't think a broad-leaf herbicide will kill them and a broad spectrum herbicide would kill everything.
You might try covering the lawn with black plastic for a couple of years, then removing the surface soil containing the violet seeds, bringing in new soil and seeding the grass. This is so onerous, however, it's almost unworkable.
In any case, I wonder where the violets came from? If the source of the violet seeds (neighbours? city land?) is still there, seeds could blow in again and you'd have the violets back.
Your best bet is to shade the violets out by letting the grass get a little longer and treating your lawn so
well it stays lush and thick. The violets will remain because they have very deep roots, but they won't be as visible because they'd be submerged in long grass. Nor will they spread as fast because grass is a strong competitor.
Q. Last year my zucchinis all fell off the stems when they were about five centimetres long. Any advice? A. Your zucchinis have a pollination problem. This is happening to more gardeners now that honeybees are vanishing from gardens.
Bumblebees and many tiny wild flies (resembling wasps) still pollinate flowers. Mason bees aren't much help with zucchinis and other late-flowering vegetables because mason bees are dead by the beginning of June.
It would be best to plant pollinator-attracting flowers near your zucchini area. These include dill, chervil, coriander, mint, fennel and Sweet Cicely. If you let a few carrots, cabbage or parsnips go to seed nearby, they'll also draw masses of pollinators.
Your alternative is handpollinating the zucchini flowers. The female flowers have a small, round knob in the centre of the bloom. The male flowers have spiky stamens. You could take a new
paintbrush and brush pollen from the male flowers into the female blooms.

Anne Risser Lee / University of Findlay
Workers correct an unfortunate lawn care accident that affected most of University of Findlay's campus.
The University of Findlay in Ohio took a lot of pride in its award-winning campus landscape until last week.
The school's lawn-care company accidentally applied weed-killer instead of fertilizer and wiped out nearly all of the lawns, a university spokeswoman said.
The mixup happened April 29 but the damage didn't become apparent for about a week, when expanses of green turned to brown dirt fields.
Now the school has to re-sod or re-seed more than 50 acres, which could cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.
University spokeswoman Brianna Patterson said the contractor's insurance company would probably pick up the tab for the work. She declined to identify the company.
"People make mistakes and we dont want to do anything that would harm their other business," she said.
She noted that the school won an "America in Bloom" award last year for its beautiful campus.
"Its very unfortunate this happened," she said. "We will work to fix it, and the grounds will be restored to their former glory."
