Collapsed wall is on private property: DCC

    - May 13, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Blocks of broken concrete and clods of sodden mud collapsed on to a Dunedin driveway early yesterday, blocking vehicle access to five houses.

The affected home owners in Asquith St, Caversham, want the Dunedin City Council to deal with the issue, but the council says the wall was built by the developer of their subdivision in the 1950s, and is entirely on private property.

Residents had no vehicle access to their homes after the concrete retaining wall, which is about 60 years old, collapsed.

Resident Ken Stevens said he was woken by a ''thump'' about 6.45am.

''I got up - I thought `something's wrong','' he said.

Mr Stevens looked outside and discovered the retaining wall - and plenty of soil from the grass verge it held back - in the private driveway that services the Asquith St homes.

He said there had been a crack in the wall for about 14 years, and residents had been in discussion with the council for the past five years or so.

Property owner Mark Ford was also at the site of the slip yesterday morning. He said each property extended across the driveway to the wall.

He, and other residents at the site yesterday were strongly of the view the council had a responsibility - particularly because the soil that had dropped on to the driveway was council property.

But council transportation policy engineer Jon Visser said yesterday the driveway was ''completely'' on private property.

Restrictions on open air spaces as Boston assembly limits may remain until Rush

    STAFF REPORTER

    May 13, 2014

Faced with the possibility that assembly limits imposed on MITs Boston fraternities in October 2013 may continue through Rush week this September, the Interfraternity Council doubled down last week on a prohibition of the use of roof decks at all MIT fraternities in an attempt to ease tensions with the city of Boston.

The IFC has also put in place a provision that if Boston fraternities do not obtain licensure by Rush week, fraternities eligible to hold parties (those in Cambridge and Brookline) may do so only on Saturday of that week.

The assembly limits, enacted by the Boston Licensing Board, mandate that the number of people in an MIT Boston fraternity house at any time cannot exceed the residency limit, effectively restricting social gatherings and events.

The city of Boston has not specified a timeline regarding when licensure will be approved or what steps are being taken to expedite the process.

The Temporary Open Air Spaces Rule Provision

The Temporary Open Air Spaces Rule Provision, according to the IFC website, prohibits the use of roofs, roof decks, balconies, and ledges at all fraternity houses, except by maintenance personnel. The prohibition applies to all fraternities, including those in Cambridge and those which currently have licensed roof decks.

Holy Trinity needs RM800,000 for its new church building

    - May 13, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

by Salena Pail, reporters@theborneopost.com. Posted on May 14, 2014, Wednesday

MIRI: Holy Trinity Anglican Church in Lambir is in need of RM800,000 for its new church building.

Building committee member Pemanca Wilson Siang Lim said the church building project is estimated at RM1.3 million.

The site was approved last year and the earth-breaking ceremony is expected in July, he said yesterday.

He explained that the initial cost of construction was RM600,000, but this doubled due to rising prices of materials and the need for new facilities for the church which will be able to accommodate a congregation of 500.

The last two years, the church committee has been running around raising the funds for the construction. Weve received several grant allocations from the government through ministers and peoples representatives as well as keen individuals, he said.

Recently, Minister of Social Development Tan Sri William Mawan Ikom handed over a second government grant of RM25,000.

In November, 2013, Tan Sri Mawan also announced a grant of RM25,000 during the fundraising dinner, thus to sum up, he has contributed a total of RM50,000 in funds for the Holy Trinity Anglican Church project, he said.
