The tub has also ADA-compliant contoured seating, a quick-fill faucet, and a wide-opening door. Its simpler than other walk-in tubs on this list. If you dont need a whirlpool or powered drain features, this tub performs well at a lower cost, said Severson.

Universal Tubs offers a 10-year warranty on the tub shell, frame, and finish and a lifetime warranty on the door seal. The company can help you find a certified and licensed installer.

If you want to create a safer bathroom environment, walk-in tubs arent your only option.

Other potentially effective alternatives include:

A step-in shower is a pre-fabricated shower that has no threshold to step over. It has a seat or bench that allows you to sit while bathing. This is ideal if you prefer to use a handheld showerhead versus soaking in a tub.

According to Severson, you can install non-slip flooring, safety rails, and comfortable seating in a step-in shower. The floor tile can also be continued throughout the bathroom.

After a decades-long campaign by some health and labor organizations, the Environmental Protection Agency last week banned the use of the pesticide chlorpyrifos on food grown in or imported into the United States.

The pesticide has been used to control crop pests since 1965. Its most commonly used on grapes, broccoli and cauliflower and row crops.

For years advocacy groups have noted chlorpyrifoss negative effects on childrens brain development, citing studies that link the pesticide to learning disabilities and ADHD. News of the ban was met with praise on social media, including several Instagram and Twitter comments that commended the EPA for taking action.

But in Pennsylvania, the move was greeted with less fanfare.

I do think its something some growers will miss not having, said William Troxell, executive director of the PA Vegetable Growers Association, which did not formally take a position on the issue. In a lot of cases, there are other insecticides that are less toxic that are available. Oftentimes growers do appreciate having something thats known to be very effective available to them if they need it.

Troxell said according to the associations most recent data from 2020, out of 1,000 survey responses, 73% of Pennsylvania farmers consider themselves conventional, meaning they use pesticides either regularly or only when necessary.

Simmons Farms in McMurray falls into the conventional category.

We feel comfortable using them (pesticides), said Scott Simmons, a partner at Simmons Farms. Being that its a family farm, we dont want to use them any more than we have to we eat all our own products. We try to be careful.

Simmons said growing up, his family would spray crops with pesticides daily. Now, the farm, which complies with U.S. Department of Agricultures Integrated Pest Management (IPM) practices, only uses pesticides when necessary. Simmons said todays farmers can follow online pest trackers to determine when a certain fungus or pest will be in the area, and spray crops accordingly.

Simmons said the farm did use chlorpyrifos years ago, but hasnt used that particular pesticide in about 15 years.

We have seen a trend in the declining use of chlorpyrifos in Pennsylvania already as growers saw signals of this coming, Emily Demsey, communications director for the state Department of Agriculture, wrote in an email. Production of the chemical has been phased out of major producers.

The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture does not gather data on pesticide use, but the departments observations support the Pennsylvania Farm Bureaus most recent data showing only a small percentage of farmers surveyed use chlorpyrifos regularly.

The farm bureau advocated against the EPA banning the use of the pesticide.

Farmers have been using (chlorpyrifos) for decades. Every farm is different, the soil is different. A lot of farmers are making decisions based on years of research of what is working specifically on their farms, said Liam Migdail, a spokesperson for the farm bureau. A lot of these are very, very farm-specific decisions. Whenever you take away a tool ... theres a lot of relearning that has to happen, that process of trial and error.

No relearning will take place at Redrange Farm in Fayette County.

We do not use any chemicals in our gardens or farming areas, Lorraine Coates, who runs the farm with Roger Clawson, stated in an email. This ban does not impact us in any way.

Some states, including Maryland, already have begun phasing out chlorpyrifos. Demsey said the EPAs action is effective six months after the ban is added to the federal register, meaning it should take effect in early 2022.

Handling an Infestation

You have several options for handling an infestation, ranging from mechanical to chemical. The first step is always to identify what type of pest youre dealing with and where theyre coming from.

Then, follow up with one of these pest control strategies.

Traps: Store-bought traps can be very effective for difficult pests like cockroaches. Most traps involve bait and a glue or sticking agents to hold the insects on the trap. Some traps, especially for winged bugs, use containers with bait, so once the insect flies inside, it cant get back out.

Household Products:

Dish Soap: Spray diluted dish soap on ant-infested areas to get rid of these pests. It helps eliminate the scent of their trails.

Lavender: Flies, moths, and mosquitos hate the scent of lavender. You can hang dried bouquets of lavender in entryways, or dab a small amount of essential oil in problem spots.

Lemon: Rubbing a lemon peel around entryways, windows, and baseboards can help deter spiders and other insects.

Vinegar: A squirt of dish soap with your vinegar will attract and then trap any fruit flies or standard flies that may be swarming around your kitchen fruit bowl. A cocktail of vinegar, lemon juice, and witch hazel is also effective for ridding your home of fleas.

Chemical Insecticides: If you have a stubborn pest or an infestation larger than the pointed interventions above can address, consider using one of the pesticides available commercially. Choose the pesticide that will target your pest (an insecticide specifically for spiders or mites, for example).

Wear protective clothing and safety gear (including goggles and gloves).

If youve tried traps, natural, and chemical strategies, and you still have unwanted houseguests, its definitely time to call in the pros. (Although, theres no shame in bringing in the pros after even one unsuccessful DIY pest control option, especially if youve got a phobia of your pest.)

Pest-Proofing Your Home

As they say, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Keep your home pest-free with some simple daily guidelines.

Start by removing the things that make your home inviting to bugs, like cluttered places to hide, scraps of food (or trash), and standing water. You may even want to cover pet water bowls at night and tightly cover any garbage cans in your house.

Here are several additional measures you can take to pest-proof your home:

Seal cracks with caulk.

Seal around windows and doors with weather stripping or door sweeps.

Fill holes with steel wool.

Store food only in the kitchen and only in sealed containers (even dry goods like pasta, flour, crackers, etc.).

Sweep up any spills and crumbs.

Take out the garbage frequently.

Vacuum and sweep regularly.

Remove any standing water (around houseplants, leaky faucets, etc.).

Outside:

Keep the perimeter of the house free of clutter and yard debris.

Stack firewood away from the house.

Remove weeds and old leaves, anything thats a good hiding place for pests.

A California high school is delaying the start of its school year because of a severe rat infestation, Newsweek reports.

About 2,600 students at Schurr High School in Montebello, California, were scheduled to resume in-person classes on Monday, after taking remote classes for over a year. But when teachers arrived on campus to prepare their classrooms, they found dead rats on the floors and desks covered in rodent feces. One teacher reported hearing rats running around in the buildings walls and ceilings.

In addition to the rat infestation, teachers said the facilitys air conditioning system was not properly working, a problem in a school where many of the classrooms dont have windows to open for fresh air, The Los Angeles Times reports. COVID-19 safety measures recommend improved air ventilation systems in schools and other public buildings.

Montebello School District Interim Superintendent Mark Skvarn admitted the schools maintenance staff did not adequately prepare the building for reopening and offered no excuses for their inaction.

Im not going to make excuses that this stuff was done as well as it could have been done, he said.

The school had had a severe rodent problem for years. A teacher confirmed that before the school closed for the coronavirus pandemic, rats would commonly fall out of tile ceilings and scurry to the next classroom in the middle of the school day.

The outer sections of the theater are beautifully designed with bright white paint abutting hammered silver or black metal back splashes at the bars and painted black, silver or mirrored accents. There are also several large art installations that standout in the structure including a two-story Kaynemaile mesh chandelier that hangs over the west balcony bar and a colorful and textured art wall designed by artist Sandeep Mukherjee.

The indoor/outdoor balcony gives a ton of space for concert goers to grab a drink and chill at numerous standing cocktail tables in a space that overlooks the American Airlines Plaza and into SoFi Stadium. The extended balcony also offers a cool breeze near the west balcony bar and a view of the man-made Lake Park and the future location of eateries, shops, apartment homes and a hotel that will complete the over 300 acre Hollywood Park.

Jason Gannon, managing director of SoFi Stadium and Hollywood Park, said during a media walk-thru of the venue that the flexibility of all of the indoor and outdoor mixed-use spaces was vital to the overall plan. However, the area, which is right next door to the 18,000-capacity Forum, truly needed a more medium-sized, indoor concert and events space.

Inglewood Mayor James T. Butts Jr., who was also on hand during the media tour, agreed. Butts noted that when he became mayor in 2011 the city that was once known as The City of Champions before the Los Angeles Lakers and Kings had moved to downtown Los Angeles, had become known as the place with the Sizzler and the big doughnut, he added.

What this has done is rounded out the rich tapestry that we have here that says you can come to Inglewood and do anything, he said referencing all of Los Angeles Rams owner Stan Kroenkes vision coming to life with Hollywood Park, including bringing the Los Angeles Rams and Chargers to SoFi Stadium, as well as The Forum returning to a full-time concert venue and the all-new Los Angeles Clippers arena thats set to open in the area in 2024.

Its perfect, too, that YouTube will be a sponsor [of the theater] because they have the capacity to provide coding training and other services that will benefit the development of youth in the community, he said. The most important thing for us is that one, residents are trained and employed and two, that the youth benefit from all of these different entities that come here to enrich life and culture in the city.

YouTube Theater is a 227,000 square-foot, three-story venue. The exterior, facing the plaza, is covered in a conical, sloping glass facade that creates a more open feel.

The place is packed with amenities including a 3,500-square foot private club with dark wood accents and a heavy, floor-to-ceiling art installation/accordion-style door that separates the hallway from the club space. It includes 140 premium seats and six 12-person luxury boxes. Theres also a 68-capacity art deco-style Industry Room with a speakeasy vibe for extra VIP guests and a full-service catering kitchen capable of serving up to 2,000 people.

Need a drink or a snack? There are bars everywhere. There are a total of 47 points-of-sale scattered throughout seven different full-service bars.

Inside the venue, house reduction curtains have been hung to allow the space to be divided into three crowd capacities with the full house accommodating 6,000 seats as well as 3,400 and 4,400-capacity settings. The stage itself is 6,100 square-feet, which is massive in person, and includes a rigging capacity of 200,000 pounds which will allow for a variety of larger-scale touring productions. There are also large screens hung on either side of the stage for optimal viewing. The sight lines are great, but a little steep, with the farthest seat in the house being only 164 feet from the stage.

The space is also equipped with its own three-bay loading dock and production room to allow it to run independently with its own programming or function as an extension of SoFi Stadium and the American Airlines Plaza as part of a larger event.

YouTube Theater is the first physical venue the online streaming platform with over 2 billion users has invested in.

It offers a unique business opportunity for us to combine a digital world with a physical one, Angela Courtin, vice present of brand marketing for YouTube, said on the tour. I think if we can dream it, it can exist here.

The idea, she continued, was to bridge the gap between what users experience on YouTube with what can be experienced in real life. Theres also plenty of opportunity for YouTube content creators, artists, comedians and gamers to create unique content at the theater to share with their virtual audiences.

Thats what we conceived when imagining what this event space could be, Courtin said. The technology is state-of-the-art, the cameras and sound, everything. That way when we work with artists and creators we can partner with them and say How can we take this experience and put it out to our 2 billion users worldwide?

The venue is fully stocked with premium audio and visual equipment that will make livestreaming an option for all event types. Theres a large interactive digital wall inside as well that can be used to showcase the work of YouTube creators and artists in a gallery-like setting. It can also be uploaded with exclusive curated content to match whatever is happening inside the theater on any given evening. Outside the venue, in the American Airlines Plaza, fans can interact with the 13-foot-by-10-foot digital signage display of the YouTube icon by mirroring themselves on the screen and watching highlights from YouTube.

COMING TO YOUTUBE THEATER

For now, YouTube Theater is set to kick-off on Friday, Sept. 3 with the Hollywood Black Comedy Festival led by comedian Deon Cole along with Corey Holcomb, Luenell, Earthquake and Tony Roberts.

Trying to sleep through a sizzling summer night isnt easy merely thinking cool thoughts doesnt cut it. Many of us have undersized air conditioners that arent used to running day in and day out as they have been lately. Trying to stay comfortable in heat waves takes a concerted effort, one that may need to be multifaceted.

Window air conditioning units and portable air conditioners are options worth considering. Window units can often be plugged into a standard outlet as long as the circuit is not shared by another major appliance. If the required amperage is over 7 amps, it is best the unit is on its own dedicated circuit.

Portable units are perfect for a garage or rental where a more permanent solution isnt available. If there is another way to cool, however, use it portable units are the loudest and least efficient way to cool.

Ideally, a portable or window a/c unit should be placed close enough to an outlet to allow the cord to reach, but if you need immediate relief, you can use a short, extra heavy-duty 12-gauge extension cord specifically designed for major appliances (not an extension cord you pick up from the local drug store). Even the right extension cord is only to be used for a few hours at a time and is designed for temporary use only.

Any time you add a major appliance, like a hot tub or an air conditioner, you need to make sure your electrical system can handle the increased load.

If you employ a fair amount of power strips and extension cords in your home, you are probably using more electricity than your panel was designed to offer. Lights dimming or flickering, breakers tripping, buzzing and crackling noises coming from your electrical panel, or your panel feeling warm to the touch are all signs your electrical system is maxed out.

Your electrical service and panel are key to your cooling options. Your electrical service is the strength of the electrical current fed into your panel from the citys grid.
