Chrysler Museum gets energy efficient in $24m renovation

    - May 13, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The $24 million renovation and expansion of the Chrysler Museum of Art in Norfolk is not only the most ambitious in its history, but its director says new energy efficiencies could carve as much as a third from its massive utility bill.

Director Bill Hennessey said the museum's antiquated heating and cooling system was replaced during its yearlong overhaul with modern, centrally controlled chillers and air handlers, and every one of its 3,000 incandescent light bulbs was switched out, half of them replaced with energy-saving LEDs. The upgrades could cut its annual $600,000 utility bill by as much as $200,000.

"It was part of our overall package and the museum's commitment to do the right thing for the environment and also for our operating budget," Hennessey said Monday.

The Chrysler plans to reopen Saturday with new exhibits and additional gallery space, its caf and catering kitchen relocated behind the museum store and a main entrance made accessible to those using wheelchairs or walkers.

Museum officials have said the main priority of their renovation was to add about 10,000 square feet of gallery space, but energy efficiency was another alluring benefit.

Valuable displays are demanding when it comes to climate control, preferring temperature and humidity at constant, moderate levels year-round.

"Works of art don't like change," Hennessey said.

Their new system is built to deliver a constant 70 degrees F and 50 percent relative humidity, which he calls a "good compromise" among various types of art.

The museum's big AC chillers in the attic were 35 years old, Hennessey said, but their smaller, modern replacements should deliver a 25 percent energy savings.

And when the rest of the museum's 3,000 light bulbs are finally replaced with LEDs, he said they hope for similar savings there.

Commission Approves Compromise $52.1 Million in Schools Capital Funding

    - May 13, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    VOL. 129 | NO. 93 | Tuesday, May 13, 2014

Shelby County Commissioners approved Monday, May 12, an immediate infusion of $52.1 million in capital funding for Shelby County Schools and the six suburban school systems.

The compromise resolution worked out with leaders of the suburban school systems includes $4.8 million in capital projects at five of the six suburban school systems. It also keeps the $47.3 million in capital projects for Shelby County Schools a majority on the commission recommended in committee sessions last week. The Shelby County Schools list includes a new roof for Millington Central High School which is in the sixth of the six suburban school systems.

Shelby County Mayor Mark Luttrell had proposed $16.9 million in capital funding for Shelby County Schools, a proposal the commission rejected in committee.

The dollar total of the resolution approved Monday is more than the $50 million cap Luttrell and his administration had suggested spending on schools capital needs out of a total of $75 million in capital funding for all of county government. The larger amount for all capital funding is part of county governments debt policy.

But county Chief Administrative Officer Harvey Kennedy told commissioners and schools officials Monday that the administration could work with the $52.1 million amount approved and adjust the rest of the capital spending accordingly.

Shelby County government has not provided any capital funding for schools in the current fiscal year and the year before because of the historic transition of public education in Shelby County from two school systems to one merged school district and, starting with the new school year in August, seven public school systems within the county.

But $55 million in capital funding for schools was set aside by county government.

And commissioners were surprised to learn that the $5 million they approved in March for the last piece of public financing of the Crosstown redevelopment project came from the $55 million set aside for schools capital needs. Several said Monday they would have voted against the Crosstown funding had they known. Other commissioners argued that there had been no call for schools capital funding in March.

Shelby County Schools leaders wanted the capital funding before the end of the current fiscal year to avoid having to split such funding with the suburban school systems proportionately based on average daily attendance for each school system.

Kevin Hunt: Wiring In Tree, Bill Shock, Then $480 Cancellation Fee From DirecTV

    - May 13, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A contract with a satellite or cable provider, like a diamond, is forever and almost as expensive.

    It can feel that way.

Consumers must treat any agreement for television service, Internet and landline phone as if it were a deal with a wireless provider. You know how that works: The commitment usually starts at one or two years. There's no way out unless you pay an early-termination fee.

Martha Schukoske of Cromwell didn't know the true meaning of telling DirecTV over the phone in early April that, yes, she wanted to save a few dollars a month by trying the satellite service.

"I spoke with six or seven people who either gave me false information or neglected to make we aware of extra charges," she says. "There were certain items that I did not want included. Some 'associates' told me, 'no problem, just tell the installer.' . . . Others said they would write a note on the installers' instructions. Neither happened. Some said as soon as I was connected, they would remove what I did not want. Others said I had to wait a month."

Schukoske, 67, says an advertisement she saw online offered a DirecTV bundle of television, phone and Internet service for $77.94 a month. She did not realize, however, that the fine-print details indicated Internet and phone service would be provided by AT&T and cost $87.94 more a month.

Her regret became despair as soon as the installer left.

"The installer drilled holes in the foundation and, after he left, I found he had strung a wire through the tree branches up to the roof," she says. "I know. I should have inspected before I signed off."

Immediately, Schukoske wanted to cancel the service. She checked the contract she just signed. It said she agreed to pay the first bill plus $20 per month of the two-year contract, even if she canceled.

"I am a senior citizen on a fixed income. I certainly do feel taken advantage of. Please, I cannot afford this," she said when she contacted The Bottom Line.

Pneumatic Light Mast features five 750 W quartz light heads.

    - May 13, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The PLM-13.5-5X500Q rugged telescoping pneumatic mini light tower from Larson Electronics is designed to allow operators to quickly and safely deploy 52,500 lumens of flood light in locations where the equipment must be elevated to heights up to 13.5 feet for effective applications. This air powered light boom can be extended to 13.5 feet for maximum area coverage and collapsed to 5 feet to bring the equipment closer to the target area as well as transporting. The tower is constructed of high strength, heat treated aluminum tubing for strength and durability. The tower is comprised of four sections and includes a locking top mounting plate for easy removal of the lights.

Included with this mast are five of our wet area suitable 750 watt quartz light heads mounted to a removable mast head. Each light head is equipped with a 500W and 250W bulb producing 15,750 lumens, for a combined total of 78,750 lumens at 3,750 watts. Each light is independently adjustable which allows operators to position each light head precisely for optimal beam spread. This mast is elevated using an included 250 watt 220 volt AC, 1/3 horsepower air compressor. An air release valve located at the base of this pneumatic mast allows operators to lower the tower. The 16/3 AWG wiring is internally routed, meaning there is no loose wiring when the tower is collapsed and no exposed wiring to fray or become damaged. The PML-13.5-5X500Q includes a three-wire internal wiring harness with 12 inches extending from both ends of the tower to allow easy installation and connection.

The light heads features a push button switch allowing operators to cycle through 250W, 500W, and 750W configurations, said Rob Bresnahan with Larsonelectronics.com. This feature makes this unit very versatile allowing the user to select the amount of illumination that is needed.

Larson Electronics carries an extensive line of light towers, portable distribution panels, explosion proof lights, portable work lights and industrial grade LED area lights. Phase I of Drobonso electrification project completed

    - May 13, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Business News of Sunday, 11 May 2014

    Source: Graphic Online

The first phase of an electrification project at Drobonso, the capital of Sekyere Afram Plains, has been completed.

This was made possible through efforts of the Ministry of Energy to connect people in the newly created district to the national grid.

Under the first phase of the project, only streetlights have been connected to the national grid, while the second phase, yet to be started, would be the wiring of the various households and installation of electric metres.

A 14.2 km stretch of electric poles wiring commenced on September 15, 2013 and was completed on December 15, 2013.

The Resident Engineer, Mr Kwadwo Asare of the Wilkins Engineering, told the Daily Graphic that power was connected from Deduako near Atebubu in the Brong Ahafo Region to Drobonso.

He said with the quick collaboration of the Ministry of Energy and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), the second phase could commence in no time.

At a ceremony at Drobonso, both the Member of Parliament for Sekyere Afram Plains, Mr Alex Adomako-Mensah, and the District Chief Executive, Mr Donkor Fuseini, were assisted by the Dronbonsohene, Nana Dwamena Dankwa Dwubisiaw, to inaugurate the first phase of the project.

He pledged his support for the electrification project at Drobonso, as that was his place of abode, and called on the government to quicken efforts to commence the second phase, when electricity would be extended to the various households.
