SINGAPORE - A $10 bribe cost former Certis Cisco security guard Kalaiarasan Muniandy his job and landed him in court yesterday, when he was charged with corruption.
The 22-year-old Malaysian allegedly took the "coffee money" from a maid in return for not taking action against her for drinking water at Paya Lebar MRT station on Jan 19.
In court, he indicated that he wished to plead guilty. His case will be mentioned next Friday. The maximum penalty for corruption is a $100,000 fine and five years' jail.
Responding to a media query, Certis Cisco's vice-president of group marketing and corporate communications Richard Lau said: "At Certis Cisco, we train and expect our officers to uphold high standards of professionalism and integrity. We do not tolerate misdemeanour of any kind." The accused's services have been terminated by the company, he said.
Kalaiarasan, who was employed by Certis Cisco's Protection Services, had been attached to SMRT. Part of his duty as a transit security officer was to conduct bag checks on commuters.
The Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau said yesterday it received information from police on Feb 20 alleging that one of its guards had obtained "coffee money" from a maid in return for him doing her a favour.
Further investigation showed Kalaiarasan had spotted Hasna drinking water at the station. He told her she would be issued with a summons of $300 for consuming water. He also recorded her particulars on a bag check list. Hasna could not pay the fine and told Kalaiarasan she had only $10.
He allegedly asked her to place the note on his desk. She was then allowed to leave. Subsequently, he allegedly blotted out her particulars from the list.

Herb Hauls grew up far from environmental nirvana, in an asphalt-heavy North Philadelphia neighborhood where buses and cars junked up the air and blades of grass were few.
He earned a degree in electrical engineering at Drexel University, working first at Peco Energy Co. and then for the Navy in ship acquisitions, overseeing vessels' electric plants and control systems. He cleared six figures last year, he said.
Now, he's mowing lawns for a living.
This is not an act of desperation. It's a fully reasoned career switch based on a belief that Philadelphians, no matter how tiny their allotment of turf, and their lawn-rich suburban counterparts will have an environmental conscience akin to that of property owners in other parts of the country - and will be willing to open their wallets to back it up.
As the name implies, Clean Air is more than organic treatment of soil and the green stuff it sprouts. Non-chemical alternatives have been around for at least 20 years.
It's what's on each of its trucks that distinguishes Clean Air: a roof-mounted, 135-watt, 12-volt solar panel and an inverter to charge its all-electric equipment for mowing (except for ride-ons), trimming, and blowing.
"It's a great talking point," Hauls said of his solar-powered offerings. "Whether people care is another issue. I don't think we have on the East Coast as environmentally conscious people as on the West Coast. It's a matter of educating."
Clean Air's website (cleanairlawncare.com) does some of that with the following assertions:

FOR anyone looking to begin their own business, Express Mobile Services North Queensland master franchisor Noel Matsen is the man to see.
Mr Matsen is taking advantage of the Daily Mercury's Buy Local Bargains campaign and is offering people the opportunity of beginning their own car detailing or lawn mowing franchise for $6950.
As part of the campaign readers need to snip out the Express Services coupon on page 4 of today's paper.
Mr Matsen said it was a great opportunity because it was a low start-up cost for the business.
"You still get the full training, all the training is paid for plus all the equipment. The (franchise) is about $6950 all inclusive to get started," he said.
The born-and-bred Mackay man works for Express Mobile Services, which is aiming to establish franchises throughout Queensland, Australia and the world.
Mr Matsen has his own franchise with Express Services, an air-conditioning cleaner service, which he began in October last year.
"I then brought the master franchise rights, which means I'm now the master franchisor for north Queensland," he said.
"What I'm doing as part of my job is advertising in the local bargains just to raise awareness and to sell franchises here, Rocky (Rockhampton) or wherever."

WASTE: Fly-tipping in Birmingham and other UK cities[GETTY]
The move by a growing number of local authorities, mainly Labour and Liberal Democrat-controlled, has been condemned by Communities Secretary Eric Pickles and public spending watchdogs.
Research by academics at Kent University found nearly half of all households feel garden waste bin collection services are inadequate and this is likely to lead to fly-tipping.
A 35 charge on garden waste collections in Birmingham has resulted in bags of grass and hedge cuttings being dumped at roadsides.
Binmen had to be pulled from their rounds to man privately run rubbish tips as huge queues of frustrated gardeners built up last week.
Police were called to one Birmingham city centre tip as tempers frayed in the mile-long hold-ups.
Resident Janet Griffith, 51, said: I spent about 45 minutes on the first trip to the tip, went home and it has been another 45 minutes on my second trip.
Only about five per cent of the citys 400,000 homes have paid for garden bin collections, casting serious doubt on the ruling Labour groups hopes of saving an estimated 2.5million a year.
Yellow stickers warning of 2,500 fines have been put on abandoned bags of green waste at roadsides but the controversial tax is expected to cause more fly-tipping and a drop in recycling.
A 36 charge for garden waste collections in South Gloucestershire led to 4,200 residents signing a petition presented to Parliament by Kingswood MP Chris Skidmore.
