MPS Launches New Integrated Pest Management Division

    - May 10, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

General Press Releases Friday May 9, 2014 12:13

    Bangkok--9 May--Marantelli Partners

Bangkok based Mainstay Property Solutions (MPS), an associate company of Loxley PLC, announced today the official launch of their new Integrated Pest Management Division. MPS has partnered with leading Japanese pest management solutions provider TEC Co Ltd. of Osaka, Japan to deliver internationally recognised products, consumables and application equipment to achieve best pest control performance for their Thailand customers.

MPS selected TEC due to their strong reputation for innovation and attention to detail. Their pest management philosophy focuses on the correct identification of pest species, correct and limited use of treatments, treatment monitoring, and progress reporting. Proactive solutions are also provided to prevent or limit pests entering the premises.

The pest control solutions provided by MPS have been carefully selected to be environmentally friendly and sustainable, having no effect on humans or on the environment and no effect on beneficial insects, wildlife, or pets, while being very effective in killing harmful pests. Some conventional chemical spraying solutions commonly used in Thailand have been banned in western countries because they leave residual chemicals in the house or workplace which can have carcinogenic effects and negatively impact humans, the environment and wildlife by poisoning the water table and surface water supplies.

The MPS Pest Management Solutions is ideal for customers suffering from asthma or either skin or respiratory allergic sensitisation. The highly targeted treatments only affect the target pest species, significantly reducing the treatment scope and the chance for undesirable side effects. The targeted treatments completely eliminate the unwanted pest species, reducing the chance of developing chemical resistant pests and the resulting need for more aggressive chemical options.

Whining, biting, annoying mosquitoes are back (with video)

    - May 10, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

REGINA Mosquitoes are one of the summers greatest nuisances, and the City of Regina is ramping up for another year of trying to rid the city of the itch-producing bloodsuckers.

Were not trapping anything yet, but the mosquito larvae are there and there will be mosquitoes this year, Ray Morgan, the citys pest control manager, said Thursday morning at a press conference where city staff showed off their pest management techniques.

Airborne adult mosquitoes havent emerged yet it turns out the colder spring weather this year has been good for one thing. But the larval populations are already booming in sloughs, standing water and puddles around the city, like the one just south of the Ring Road on Lewvan Drive where orange-vested staff blasted pellets of larvicide into the water.

Even weather conditions, if you compare it to last year, were even a little bit behind, Morgan said. The cooler temperatures are keeping things at bay here, and maybe thats a benefit because it lets us get ahead of the game.

City workers fan out across Regina, and even five to 10 kilometres out of city limits, starting in mid-April to begin the process of killing off mosquito larvae. Keeping track of the volumes and conditions of the larvae as they come out of the winter hibernation period is key, Morgan said. So is applying the pelleted biological larvicide VectoBac to the water.

Once the adult mosquitoes begin to emerge, the city monitors the dozen or so traps around Regina to estimate numbers and determine which species of mosquitoes have made their appearance, including those which can carry West Nile virus.

Its still too early in the season to determine what this years mosquito outlook will be, but by early June the city should have a better guess of how many bites you might be nursing this summer.

Those who fear that familiar high-pitched whine of a mosquito trapped in their house as they try to drift off to a summer nights sleep can take steps to try to control the population of the biting beasties too.

If youve got standing water in your yard, paddling pools, even plastic bags that are laying in your yard, they all can hold water, Morgan said.

Those tiny pools of water can become mosquito breeding grounds, so eliminating as many of those sites as possible is a good start.

    Venue published Garden to reflect

As garden designers, we often get calls from existing customers asking for alterations, or additions to their gardens. As yet, we haven't had a call from a new owner, asking us to rip out one of our designs but it is inevitable that it will happen one day!

Garden styles evolve and customers have widely varied needs. We get plenty of calls from people with young families, where a garden is full of steep steps and hard edges which need softening. However, there are plenty of customers who play out the whole family cycle from fledgling chicks to empty nest, without moving house.

During this time the garden evolves to the rapidly changing needs of a growing family. Out go the sand pit and plastic toys; in come the climbing frame and trampoline, until suddenly, one day, a calm descends on the garden and the kids have started to move out.

At this point, the garden takes on a different prospect. Of course, children will always be back for extended visits, but at this stage in life, with extra time available, the outdoor space presents a new challenge.

Maybe that challenge is to finally get that veg bed sorted out, or indulge in a new pond, and get the garden just the way you want it. Many people want a space that they can enjoy with minimal extra maintenance.

In this garden, pictured, we approached the design to include repositioning an existing pond, which had seen better days. Our clients wanted plenty of space for planting, but to include a small lawn.

One side of the garden had been slightly raised and, because the garden was walled, we were able to create a decent raised bed using reclaimed Victorian bricks. At the point where this wall approaches the house, we built a semi-circular brick seat surrounding a small circular patio. The seat is just big enough to seat the family of four people snugly. It is next to the rear patio doors, so works well for the occasional quick morning coffee, or an evening sundowner.

Adjacent to this paving we fitted a deck which runs up to the back doors. The whole garden was raised 150mm during the construction and the deck now slopes gently down from the house.

We also refurbished the existing rear patio, changing the shape from square to quarter circle using matching bricks to define the shape. Raising the garden helped to reduce the step up to this paved area.

Exterior Anxiety: Painting the outside of your house is a lot more than just picking a color

Andy Vincent, who has been painting houses for more than 20 years, lists three must-haves when it comes to painting the exterior of a house.

    * Clean. Get all dirt and debris off the old paint.

    * Dry. Once you clean it, which will definitely include water, you have to give it a day or so to completely dry.

    * Dull. "Paint will not bind to anything shiny," he says. You don't have to sand the heck out of the old paint, he says, just use it enough to knock the sheen off.

Randy Wilson hears it all the time. Someone calls and says the outside of their house needs a new paint job because one or more sections have discolored or lost their luster.

When he gets out there, though, he sees the real problem.

"Usually, when they start thinking about painting, they see some kind of problem with the paint, but it's really the roof or the gutters, some kind of leak or something's rotted," says Wilson, a professional painter in Chattanooga. "When we go out and look at them ourselves, we check all those things and, if it's gutters or carpentry work, that's something we do because it's something we run into on almost every job."
