Two Years On, Sedition Law Replacement Still On Drawing Board, Says Minister

    - May 10, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Details Published on Friday, 09 May 2014 09:57

KUALA LUMPUR - The replacement for the Sedition Act 1948 is still being drafted two years after Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak pledged to replace the controversial law with the National Harmony Act, Minister Nancy Shukri said.

The new law is being drafted by the National Unity Consultative Council (NUCC) and members expect to show the bill to the Cabinet before a date set for its presentation in parliament is determined.

We are still drafting it actually, there are more things to come, Shukri, the de facto law minister told The Malay Mail Online when contacted yesterday.

The minister in Prime Ministers Department declined to elaborate over the phone, saying she was currently abroad.

However, NUCC member and PAS MP Datuk Dr Mujahid Yusof Rawa said that aside from content, members were also concerned about the bills passage through Parliament.

He added the NUCC will seek public input before the bill goes before the Dewan Rakyat, putting the earliest date by December this year.

The 66-year-old law, which critics denounce as a government tool to silence dissent, continues to be used even today.

In the latest, senior DAP MP Teresa Kok was charged with sedition this week over her satirical video during Chinese New Year.

Serdang MP Ong Kian Ming said Koks sedition charge reflected the Najibs administrations failure in fulfilling its promises for reform.

Back in the Sky: Daughter remodels room for aviator dad

    - May 10, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

CARBONDALE -- Cheryl Francis has taken a cluttered, outdated room in her father's house and transformed it into a showcase where he can relive his World War II service aboard bombers.

"I thought about this for a long time. I wanted to transform the space so he would have things around him -- his accomplishments and awards, his paintings, computer space and book cases," Francis said about the 10-by-12 room.

Her father, retired Lt. Col. Thomas B. Engram, trained in B-25s and was a pilot and member of B-24 units that drew 36 missions, dropping explosives in Japanese harbors during the Pacific Ocean theater of World War II.

She had the entire space gutted and did the remodeling by phases with some of the work done by private contractors.

New carpet was installed. Walls got sanded and repainted. Francis wanted to highlight a a new room layout around a special feature -- a window.

"This is very serene. The window looks out on the backyard," she said.

In addition to getting the floor plan organized and the various items in place, such as her father's history books in new cases, Francis applied her creative touch as an educated interior designer.

She had track lighting and new file cabinets installed. Family furniture got refinished. And her shopping at antique stores landed her a jewel in the form of a large illustration of a B-24 pilot's instruments and control panel from the cockpit of a B-24 Liberator.

"I framed and featured it to include with his memorabilia," Francis said about the illustration.

Engram said he sits in front of the illustration and can almost hear a full throttle of the engine.

HouseWorks: Improve your space? Dream on

    - May 10, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The least expensive step in any remodeling project is the planning.

Or dreaming as the case may be.

I have, for example, been planning my dream house for about 20 years.

It will be in the hills north of Santa Fe, N.M., and it will be a two-story adobe with maid's quarters upstairs (I'll be well-heeled, I hasten to add), a sunken living room, a dining room atrium, a TV/game room, a book-lined balcony and a large bricked front courtyard with a fountain surrounded by a low adobe wall.

    It changes all the time.

Sometimes the front feature is a gnarly old pinon tree, and sometimes the low wall is brick to match the courtyard.

Sometimes there's a wine cellar under the kitchen.

I have gone as far as to plan the bannister, which will be made of peeled poles. I know exactly how they'll be attached although I'll have to find a blacksmith to make the brackets I've dreamed up, because I don't work in iron.

Oh, they'll be a big woodworking shop behind the garage and a kennel behind that. Maybe a vegetable garden, although I don't know exactly what you can grow in northern New Mexico besides peppers.

    I don't like peppers.

Johnnys Seafood to reopen with real bistro, delivery hub

A Tacoma waterfront landmark, shuttered since January, will reopen Monday after a multimillion-dollar remodeling and expansion that created a new waterside light-dining option for Tacomans and returns the company that owns it to the retail seafood business.

Johnnys Seafoods updated building at 1199 Dock St. on downtowns Thea Foss Waterway remains in the location the seafood market has occupied for 39 years, but it has several new uses.

The expansion will increase employment at the Tacoma location from the four who operated it before it closed to 24, said Bob Simon, general manager of Pacific Seafoods Washington division.

The old buildings on-site eating facilities consisted of two picnic benches outside the building where customers could eat the shrimp and crab cocktails and smoked salmon they had bought inside at the retail fish counter. The rehabilitated structure has tables for 48 diners inside and a like number outside along the expanded esplanade overlooking the waterway.

The building is equipped with a full kitchen and bar as well as the traditional retail cases for seafood. The bar will also serve beer and wine.

Johnnys, owned by Oregon-based Pacific Seafoods since 2006, added the bistro in part at the suggestion of the city of Tacoma, which owned the building before selling it to Pacific. In return for a reduced price on the structure and the land, the city required Pacific to invest in the remodeling and to create amenities that would add to the liveliness of the Foss Waterway.

The Foss is a former industrial inlet from Commencement Bay that the city and its Thea Foss Waterway Development Authority have been cleaning up and improving for two decades.

Pacific also operates waterfront bistros at two of its Oregon coast locations.

In addition to the bistro and the expanded retail market and distribution facilities that Pacific created, the seafood company expanded the waterfront esplanade that stretches along the waterways east side through its property.
