What are the different components of a roof?
A typical roof usually consists of eight different components:
1) Decking The base of the roof, it is usually made of wood.
2) Felt paper or underlayment This is installed on top of the entire decking
3) Shingles These go on top of the felt paper and provide the outer protection of the roof from the elements. They also enhance the roof's appearance. Cost and quality vary widely by manufacturer, so check around. Get a rough estimate of cost before you choose.
4) Shingle cap This goes along the peak of the roof and enhances its look.
5) Water Shield or leak barrier This is very important for keeping water out and is usually located at junctions or crevasses in the roof, as well as all along the edge to a distance of six feet. It's also used around anything that penetrates the roof, such as a vent.
6) Starter strips are installed along the edges of the roof to stop both wind and water from getting in.
7) Ventilation While these are essentially holes in the roof, they are very important as they maintain a healthy home environment by allowing noxious fumes and heat to easily escape. It also keeps the decking and other elements from decomposing
8) Warranty While not part of the physical roof, this element is critical to maintaining its integrity. The best are those that come with a no dollar limit. When all the components fit together properly the roof works best. Buying the different elements from a single company insures compatibility and usually increases the time of the warranty.

Safety failings by Nationwide Roofing and Cladding left roofer Allen Smith with 'life changing injuries'
4:56pm Wednesday 7th May 2014 in News
A Southampton worker suffered life-changing injuries after he plunged five metres through a hole in a church roof in while it was being repaired, a court has heard.
Father of three Allen Smith, 58, from Southampton, sustained a collapsed lung, smashed pelvis and head injuries in the fall at Anerley Methodist Church in Penge, London, on October 25, 2011.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) investigated and today prosecuted Nationwide Roofing and Cladding Ltd. for serious safety failings at Westminster Magistrates Court.
The court was told Mr Smith was part of a four-strong team, including the firms director, which was replacing the church roof owing to a series of leaks. The team was three-quarters of its way through the job when the incident happened.
Mr Smith was standing on a lightweight staging board while grinding off bolts, working from the roof ridge down toward the gutter and sliding the asbestos cement sheets down to labourers to lift onto a forklift truck.
As the work went on, one of the labourers heard a loud bang and turned to see Mr Smith had fallen through the roof opening to the hall floor below. A length of the staging board was also on the floor.
Mr Smith was in hospital for two months, has had a subsequent operation on his lungs, will need a hip replacement and is likely to suffer long-term arthritis. He is unlikely to ever work again.
HSE told the court it served an enforcement notice on Nationwide Roofing and Cladding immediately after the incident preventing any further work until suitable safety measures were in place to prevent falls.

This summer will be ex-tremely busy for the Dublin City School District.
Our staff will be conducting summer school, working on building improvement projects, and preparing for the 2014-15 school year.
Advanced credit courses will be offered in a blended learning model utilizing the Dublin Technology Center this summer.
This means students will have some initial face-to-face time with an instructor, but will spend the majority of their time completing the course in an electronic format.
These courses were developed, and will be taught, by Dublin City Schools teachers.
Examples of some of the course offerings include: English IV, Chinese I, Physical Science, Health, Economics, Government, Algebra 1 and Environmental Science.
A complete list of available courses is available on the District's web site. You can download the summer school brochure at http://www.dublinschools.net/summerschool.aspx.
Elementary staff have developed an online resource for students at https://elementarysummerschool.wiki.dublinschools.net/.

A few minutes reviewing the Home Theater Wiring Installation Tips will help to avoid headaches later. Common announces such as audio buzzing or humming and slow scrolling video lines are easily preventable.
Incorrect home theater wiring can lead to endless frustrations, if you are currently experiencing problems or are in the process of doing some wiring and looking for a home theater wiring how to guide, you have come to the right place. Below you will find home theater wiring installation tips which address the common problems found in media room installations.
In addition to the information on this page, you may also find the following home theater wiring and installation articles to be helpful.
Home Theater Video Connections Video is rapidly changing from analog to digital and the digital world has different requirements then the analog of old. Therefore understanding which cable and connections are right for you is important.
Home Theater Audio Connections Similar to the video area, audio connections are moving rapidly from analog to digital. And in some cases such as (HDMI) being combined with the video.
Professional Home Theater Installation If you determine that some or all of the wiring is not something you would like to do yourself, here are some details around finding a professional to do the home theater installation with you.
Understand Wire Gauges If you are not familiar with what wire gauges are all about, it is worth taking a minute and reading up on them.
Wireless Home Theater Installation - Skip the wiring, go wireless. Tired of the wires and ready to go state of the art? Wireless options have come a long way in the last few year, you will be surprised.
Keep your high voltage and low voltage wire separated This is commonly done when wiring inside walls, but also must be done when running extension cords and cables along the walls or behind your equipment. Especially do not run them in parallel within 12 inches of each other. If your low and high voltage wires must cross do this in a perpendicular manner. This will limit interference in the low voltage line.
Avoid using wire longer then required Measure how much wire you need to neatly make the corners and route around the high voltage cords. Excess wire causes degrade in signal and therefore lesser quality. Some of this degrade can be made up with more expensive higher quality cables, but this will only help to a certain extent, best to limit the length if you can. NOTE: Cables that are too short can also cause problems. Cables should not be bent more than 60 degrees and you do not want to cause tension on the connectors.
