At my house, I cook pretty much for one reason: I get hungry.
If I didn't need to eat, and didn't actually like to eat, I would turn my kitchen into something more interesting, like an ice rink or a skydiving arena or a petting zoo, which would all be way more fun than a place to make a meal.
Apparently, I'm a minority of one. Across America, kitchens are the spaces where home improvers get the most carried away. So much so that having one fabulous kitchen indoors isn't enough anymore. People are creating serious I mean, restaurant-quality-serious kitchens outside. They have everything built in but waiters.
Some of you may recall that I've had homes in my past that had fancy outdoor cooking areas, with men who could use them. But in my current single-living situation, it's just me and my George Foreman Grill.
George and I get along pretty well, as couples go, although, he can move a little faster than I like, and he only has two temperatures: on or off. But he's at home indoors and out, and is highly portable, remarkably reliable, low-maintenance and he cleans up well.
I am grateful for George. I am also grateful for my friends who like to cook. I mean, seriously cook, as in, make bacon from scratch. They like to share their mad cooking skills, and when they do, I salivate so much I put the dogs to shame. (And they still invite me back, maybe out of pity. I mean, they know about me and George.)
These friends also have amazing outdoor kitchens and eating areas, which just keep getting better, I've noticed.
They're sprouting pizza ovens.
To find out what was up with that, I called Kalamazoo Outdoor Gourmet, partly because the name is just so fun to say, but also because the Chicago-based company has been designing, equipping and building outdoor kitchens all over the country for decades.
I get Russ Faulk, vice president of design, on the phone. He confirms that the trend toward building or expanding outdoor kitchens is not just my imagination.

For 10 years Sandy Thomas had been running a 2-mile circuit most mornings around her North Laurel neighborhood of Hammond Village to stay physically fit, but in 2006 life handed her a detour.
Her husband, Jim, died that year from skin cancer, and the ranch-style home where they had lived for nearly 40 years and raised five kids suddenly seemed too big. So she sold the house in 2007 to her son, Mark Thomas, and moved to Hanover, Pa.
Sandy Thomas, who is fit and youthful at 71, continues to run in her new community. When Mark, 46, asked her to join him in the Maryland Half Marathon in Maple Lawn on Saturday, she figured it was a good way to check an item off her "bucket list" of things she wants to accomplish in life.
She will run in the 13.1-mile race in memory of her husband, and with her son literally at her side. The pair will run at her pace so they can cross the finish line together.
All proceeds from the half marathon, and the Maryland 5K race added this year, will benefit the University of Maryland Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Cancer Center in Baltimore for the sixth consecutive year.
"Our intention at first was to move the race to different jurisdictions because races run in the same place can get stale, no matter how great the venue," said Michael Greenebaum, co-founder and co-chairman of the race, which benefits the center named in his parents' honor.
"But we feel very much at home in Howard County and our intention is to stay," he said of the event, which was moved from Baltimore County to Fulton in 2011 and continues to draw between 1,700 and 2,000 entrants each year.
Greenebaum's mother is a 24-year breast cancer survivor who takes an aromatase inhibitor developed by a University of Maryland doctor, he said.
Her successful treatment is the reason behind his parents' $10 million gift to the University of Maryland Medical System and the University of Maryland School of Medicine nearly 20 years ago, he explained.
"One of the reasons we like it here in Maple Lawn is because this is a really health-conscious and progressive county," said Greenebaum, whose real estate company developed the planned community.

Frederick Law Olmsted, god of 19th century landscape architecture, is coming to the small screen. Olmsted, who shaped some of the earliest park systems in the country, will be the subject of a new documentary premiering on PBS next month.
Olmsted was a founder of the American Society of Landscape Architects, and he transformed parks, parkways, and college campuses across the country. Perhaps most famous for Central Park, he was also responsible for the park system in Buffalo, New York, and the landscape around the U.S. Capitol Building. He designed the midway for Chicago's 1893 World's Columbian Exposition (a story made infamous in Erik Larson's book The Devil in the White City) as well as campuses for Stanford University and the University of California, Berkeley. He made significant inroads in the early conservation movement in the U.S., campaigning to preserve the natural beauty of Yosemite, Niagara Falls, and the Adirondack region.
"Most folks, when they're walking through the park, they go, 'Wow, this is a really pretty landscape,'" as one expert in the trailer for Frederick Law Olmsted: Designing America explains. "They have no idea that every nook, every cranny of these landscapes were laid out intentionally."

A number of trees and shrubs were also planted on the site by contractors hired by the department.
Friends of Bukit Kiara (FoBK) member Henry Goh said park users had called the department to file a complaint about the barbed wire which was installed to keep out trespassers.
It was highlighted in the latest edition of the Taman Tun Dr Ismail community newsletter.
"Barbed wire has its place in a war zone.
"This is not a norm and should not be encouraged. Park users and animals can get injured," said Goh.
Mountain bikers use this terrain as well. Can you imagine if they crash into the wire during their descend down the hill?"
He said it called to attention the delay in gazetting the 190ha park as a green lung.
The matter was proposed in parliament more than seven years ago.
The park's 190ha is divided into seven parcels.
