May is good time to plant seedlings, grass

    - May 5, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

According to the Becker County Master Gardeners, May is the time that most flowering annuals are available as sturdy seedlings at garden center and nurseries but many will grow just as well or even better when you seed them directly into the garden.

Zinnias, cosmos, bachelors buttons, California poppies and marigolds are good examples of annuals that grow rapidly from seed. But if you want annuals for containers, buy well developed transplants that will look good the minute you pot them up.

Early May is a good time to plant grass seed, but for good results you need to rough up the soil first. Unfortunately, this exposes crabgrass and other weed seeds that will sprout right along with your new grass.

To stop most weed seeds, apply a specially formulated version of pre-emergence herbicide right after seeding. The label must state clearly that its meant for newly seeded lawns, otherwise it will kill desired grass seeds, too.

Attract butterflies to your yard by planting many good nectar-producing flowers. Include coneflowers, Russian sage, Joe-Pye weed, butterfly weed (Asclepsias), beebalm, catmint, Mexican sunflower, and single or semi-double zinnias.

Though butterfly larvae (caterpillars) may feed on your plants, dont use any insecticides in the garden. And dont put up butterfly houses unless you enjoy them as garden art butterflies will never inhabit them.

Govt steps up cloud-seeding, building irrigation systems

    - May 5, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The national government has intensified cloud-seeding operations and allotted P1.3 billion for the construction of small-scale irrigation systems in the face of the dry weather expected to hit the country starting next month, Presidential Communications Operations Secretary Herminio Coloma Jr. said yesterday.

Authorities recently cautioned the public to brace for the El Nio dry weather phenomenon which may last until the first quarter of 2015. The weather phenomenon, characterized by reduced rainfall, may dry up farmlands, reservoirs, and waterways around the country.

The government is taking concerted action to ensure food security for our citizens and to mitigate the possible effects of the projected onset of the El Nio weather phenomenon in the country, Coloma said.

Coloma said the Department of Agriculture (DA) is coordinating with the Department of Science and Technology and the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) to intensify cloud-seeding operations to induce rain in major watersheds and drought-affected farming communities.

So far, the Bureau of Soils and Water Management has undertaken 15 such operation over the rain-deprived municipalities of Aglipay, Maddela, and Nagtipunan, and the Magat Watershed areas in Isabela, to save some 4,155 hectares of corn farms in the province.

The DA is setting up small water impounding facilities and building and repairing irrigation systems. It is also providing shallow tube wells and drought-tolerant crop varieties to the farmers.

On concerns that food prices may rise during the dry season, Coloma said the Department of Trade and Industry will be monitoring the prices and prevent any market violations.

Meantime, Malacaang reminded the public to conserve not only water but electricity as well. Government agencies should implement energy conservation measures, including limiting the use of aircondition units in offices, Coloma said.

    Water saving ideas

Meanwhile, an environmental group, the Ecowaste Coalition, urged the public to heed the governments call to cut down on water consumption to avoid a possible water crisis.

Sod company lays down roots in Kona

    - May 5, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Rob Nelson stands just outside the arc of a sprinkler and looks over 18,000 square feet of new turf that will be ready to harvest this week.

The manager of Southern Turf Hawaii, which first put down roots on Kaiminani Drive in November, Nelson just needs a customer.

As the sprinklers soak 3 acres of new grass at the farm, Nelson isnt worried about finding someone interested in purchasing his 2-by-4-foot squares of green, which run between $2 and $3 a square foot. Thats because Southern Turf Hawaii the biggest sod farm in the state with operations on Oahu and Maui has been shipping sod over on barges to meet Big Island demand.

The landscapers are busy, said Nelson, whose background is in golf course management on Oahu, Kauai and Lanai.

The Southern Turf Hawaii sign is a new sight on Kaiminani, but the company isnt new to the state. In business for two decades, stores on Oahu and Maui specialize in sod for residential, commercial, retail and golf course projects, including two current projects for golf courses on Maui and Lanai. And while Southern Turf Hawaii is used to having landscapers reserve sod by thousands of square yards months in advance, it also offers single 2-by-4-foot squares to the do-it-yourself homeowner.

The company supplies Lowes in Kona and The Home Depot on both sides of the island.

The 5.5 acres of leased land used to have plumerias growing on it. The property has been graded and covered with a layer of fine gravel, plastic and sod. A home on the lower acreage serves as Nelsons residence and a barn is in the planning stages. A water tank serves as an emergency backup in case county sources fail. Sod would be dead in three days if water sources failed, Nelson said.

People are stopping by now, asking questions. How do I do it? Were here to help, Nelson says. This is foreign to a lot of homeowners.

One method called plugging can help landscapers save money. By cutting up the sheets of sod into plugs, theyll only need a fifth of the turf that would be needed for a full layer. Once in the ground, the sod will spread quickly to cover bare ground.

Come buy only what you can put down in one day, Nelson recommends.

Cold winter leads to golf course struggles

    - May 5, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Dave Kuypers is pleased to just be opening his course.

Kuypers, the superintendent of Cutten Fields in Guelph, Ont., has struggled with ice damage on much of the green.

Golfers will be out playing this weekend, he says. They wont be putting on greens though.

Cutten Fields, a historic private course, is one of numerous Ontario golf facilities that faced an unusual amount of damage from ice and the extreme cold that occurred through to the end of March.

Most golf courses are open in April in Ontario. This year many are just opening in coming days, while others have opened with damaged greens that are brown because the Poa annua grass died after being under ice for more than 45 straight days.

Owen Russell knew he had a problem when the smell hit him.

Russell, the superintendent at Markland Woods in Etobicoke, Ont. for the past eight years, ventured out on his course in February, worried about the impact of ice and cold on his clubs greens. Like many superintendents concerned about how the coldest winter in the last three decades would affect his course, Russell drilled through the ice to see what was happening with the grass underneath.

I knew from the smell that we had a problem, he says. It smelled bad, sort of like rotten eggs.

Local businessmans plan to develop along river gets complicated

    - May 5, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

CUMBERLAND Local businessman George Merling wants to expand his investment in Cumberland by adding a recreational park along South Johnson Street, complete with a 50-kayak boat dock, vendor stations and a restaurant.

However, his early attempts and access to the levee and river have left him wondering if he will receive cooperation from city officials for his project.

If they let me, I will put in park benches, a couple gazebos, clean it out and make it nice. It will be first-class and on my money, said Merling.

Merling is the owner of Merling Sports at 100 Beall St. His sports souvenir and memorabilia store, which also sells merchandise online, is located in the 15,000-square-foot, three-story brick structure that was the former location of the Loyal Order of the Moose.

This project could add around 20 jobs for the city, said Merling, With some help, I can do it.

Mayor Brian Grim thinks that Merling has an interesting plan.

His ideas and vision is promising. We have to see if we can work through the hurdles, said Grim.

With his business and parking lot located along the Potomac River right off Interstate 68, Merling saw an opportunity. He noticed that the stretch of flat water that runs from the Allegany County Fairgrounds to the Blue Bridge dam is conducive for boating.

Its the most gorgeous 5-mile float. Its perfect for families, said Merling, an avid fisherman.

Merling wants to add steps and a railing up the levee and a wooden ramp down to the waters edge to be used as a boat dock. With a parking lot adjacent to his business, he would add vendors and eventually a restaurant on the second floor of his building. The top of the levee would also become a natural walking path that would connect to George Washingtons Headquarters and the foot bridge to Canal Place.
