Don't let dirty windows obscure your view of nature. Whether you do the job yourself or hire an experienced pro, few home investments are as immediately satisfying as clean, sparkling windows.
Here are expert DIY tips that my research team gathered from top-rated window cleaners:
Start with the right supplies. If windows are standard glass, not leaded or stained, and they aren't tinted, you should be able to use common window-cleaning products.
But you can always just clean with hot, soapy water and rinse with water and a small amount of vinegar to improve shine. Or, you can try these options:
Combine a cup of rubbing alcohol, a cup of water and a tablespoon of vinegar.
For glass that's cloudy, try straight ammonia. (Don't combine vinegar and ammonia, as they cancel each other out.)
Good wipe-down materials include paper or microfiber cloths and newspapers.
For cleaning hard-to-reach outside windows, consider an extendable tool that has a soft scrubber on one side and a squeegee on the other. Spray the scrubber with cleaning solution, clean the window and squeegee to remove the cleaner.
To more easily see streaks that will require a second shot of elbow grease, wipe the inside of glass in a different direction than the outside. For instance, go side-to-side on the inside and up and down on the back.
Here's a tip if you find that your lower windows, or siding, have dark stains: Your mulch may be to blame. Cheap mulch may be infested with a fungus that, when mature, shoots black spores that stick to glass and siding and are hard to remove completely. If you have problems, consider switching to higher quality mulch.

Rose Societys annual tour highlights Old World charm

Maria del Carmen Calvo steps into her canvas.
Nestled along the Capistrano Beach bluffs, Calvos rich garden rooms provide an escape from the outside world, where the inside meets the out, creating a space straight from one of the artists oil paintings.
Walking the grounds Calvo stops to smell the roses. Its my sanctuary, Calvo says in the heavy Spanish accent she carries even after 50 years in California.
She moves through the garden, passing through a line of olive treesa simple, gravel path shrouded by tall, neatly trimmed topiaries. Its one of the many ways her European heritage, and artistic style, shines through the rose-lined pathways and tall hedges.
Calvo and her husband, Walter Henry, have been building their home for 30 years. They started with a clean slate. All but one tree was removed when they moved into their Camino Capistrano-located home. Since, Calvo has cultivated an outdoor living space where tranquility reigns.

Roses billow from their branches, heavy and wide, encompassing cement walkways Calvo lay with intricate glass and tile designs. Fountains echo the gentle trickling of water. Around each corner, Calvos artistic sleight of hand peeks through with personal touches straight from an artists eye.

The Indooroopilly Shopping Centre redevelopment will be completed soon.
With the increasing popularity of online shopping, regional director for property research group Urbis Peter Hyland said shopping centres were trying to create an experience for shoppers in line with customer expectations.
The good centres want to be known and be distinctive for something. Its about providing environments that reflect local elements and character, he said.

State legislators plan to introduce a bill this month that would prohibit local tree ordinances such as Charlottes, igniting immediate protests from tree lovers.
A legislative study commission this week approved draft legislation that says cities and counties cant regulate the removal, replacement and preservation of trees on private property.
Reaction was swift, with critics accusing lawmakers of intruding into community matters and jeopardizing years of work to protect trees. Its just a very sad approach to stripping local authority yet again, said Rick Roti, president of the Charlotte Public Tree Fund, a nonprofit group that has planted 18,000 trees in the past six years.
Its going to upset a great number of people to learn that our legislators again think (theyre ) in a position to make decisions for local officials about how their cities should grow.
The Republican-led legislature, intent on grooming a business-friendly climate, imposed a one-year moratorium last year on local environmental rules that state or federal laws address.
Charlotte officials estimate that 4,000 trees have been cut down since 2012, when legislators allowed billboard companies more leeway to cut vegetation that blocks their signs.
Sen. Andrew Brock, the Davie County Republican who expects to co-sponsor the bill, said its the overreach of local ordinances that have drawn complaints from across the state. Its the pebbles in your shoes that are getting businesses frustrated, he said.
Brock said nursery owners have complained about city officials policing of how trees are planted. A business owner in Fayetteville, he said, was fined for not planting required trees.
He also cited Charlottes $4,700 fine of Albemarle Road Presbyterian Church in 2011 for improperly trimming eight crape myrtle trees on its property, although the city later relented. The issue, Brock said, is whether cities have overstepped their bounds or can come around to something reasonable where cities are not fining churches $4,700 for trimming up their trees. Brock said the purpose of the legislation is to draw attention to the issue, suggesting it could be modified.
Tree ordinances are often controversial, especially among developers and builders who view them as impediments. Officials of Charlottes Real Estate and Building Industry Coalition, or REBIC, couldnt be reached Friday afternoon.

The first reading of Vermillions revised tree ordinance was met with unanimous approval by the city council last week.
The meeting held April 21 marked the third time the city council had discussed the ordinance, which has not been revised since 1989.
Parks & Recreation Director Jim Goblirsch said the ordinance will illustrate the guidelines regarding the trees that can and cannot be planted on boulevards, as well as safety concerns.
Were looking down the road so we dont run into issues where we have everybody plant one species of tree, and all of a sudden if we get a disease in that species, then it wipes out a lot of trees in the community, Goblirsch said.
This is an ordinance not only for today, but to help shape Vermillions future for tomorrow, he said.
Rather than a complete revision of the previous ordinance, the version read last week is an update to better serve the citys current utility location trends, tree placement, safety, community aesthetics as well as addressing nuisance vegetation, a council agenda memo reads.
During the April 21 meeting, a citizen asked about approved versus non-approved trees, as well as whether permits would be required each time a tree particularly those bearing fruit is planted.
Forestry Division Parks Superintendent Aaron Baedke said the list of non-approved trees will be very small, probably three or four.
