Former Mayor Richard M. Daley is expected to be the star witness in Mayor Rahm Emanuels multi-million-dollar food fight with Millennium Parks Park Grill restaurant.

Daley could take the witness stand next week before Cook County Circuit Court Judge Moshe Jacobius, who must decide whether Emanuel can break the so-called sweetheart deal the restaurant got more than a decade ago when Daley was mayor.

Emanuel filed suit in late 2011, seeking to break a 30-year deal that his lawyer called a lop side contract that cheated taxpayers out of $8 million.

The Park Grill has grossed more than $100 million during its first nine years. But it has only paid $2.7 million in rent to the Chicago Park District, which has spent $3 million providing the restaurant with free water, natural gas and garbage collection.

The Emanuel administration argues the Park Grills deal is illegal because the park district let the restaurant open on land-controlled by the city without seeking permission from the City Council.

But the Park Grill run by clout-heavy businessmen James Horan and Matthew OMalley whose investors include many businessmen with political connections to Daley are puzzled by City Halls lawsuit. They point out that Daley and his top staff members knew the park district awarded the concession agreement to OMalley and Horan, who frequently met with Daley during the construction of the restaurant in 2003 and 2004.

SYDNEY: An Australian plumber who sparked a hijack alert on a plane heading for Bali when he banged on the cockpit door was Tuesday charged over the midair incident.

Matt Lockley, who has said he mistook the cockpit of the Virgin Australia jet for the toilet, was released by Indonesian authorities on Sunday without charge and arrived back in Australia early Tuesday where he was met by police.

A police statement said the 27-year-old had been served notice to appear at Brisbane Magistrates Court on June 6 in relation to an incident on a flight between Brisbane and Bali on Friday April 25.

He faces one charge of interfering with a crew member.

Indonesian officials initially said Lockley was drunk, which he denied. Lockley said the drama was a case of miscommunication.

This has been a huge misunderstanding. I had a panic attack and I just wanted to use the toilet and I made an accident by knocking on the cockpit door, he told reporters at a police station on the Indonesian resort island before leaving.

Security forces rushed to the airport as the Boeing 737-800 touched down, after the pilot reported a hijack attempt when someone started banging loudly on the cockpit door.

Lockley was dragged off the plane by the heavily armed security forces and the airport was briefly shut down, causing several planes to be diverted to other Indonesian airports.

Lockley said he was depressed during the journey as he was heading to Indonesia to try and track down his Indonesian wife, with whom he had lost contact several weeks earlier.- AFP
