Coffee shop owners Alaina and Keith Schwartz are going viral for their positive response to graffiti spray-painted on their establishment in Nashville, Tennessee.
Alaina Schwartz told TODAY Food that she and her son spotted the graffiti, which was painted on a fence surrounding the coffee shop's dumpster, as they pulled up to Caliber Coffee Co. on Saturday morning.

"My son who's six was like, 'They did a bad thing. You can't do that,'" Schwartz recalled. However, she and her husband were determined to turn a negative into a positive: After looking at the security footage and confirming that the graffiti was spray-painted by some teenagers, they put out a call on Facebook asking local muralists if they'd be interested in painting over the graffitied area.

"I was like, 'How can we spin this to make it something positive?'" said Schwartz. "We were like, let's make this great I was like, 'Hey, Nashville artists, we're looking for a mural, we had people attempt to do a mural last night, we're looking for something a little bit different.'"
Schwartz said that she was looking for a "positive or uplifting" piece of art, but the post led to an even more surprising turn of events.
"The next day, those boys came into our shop," said Schwartz. "They came up and they're like, 'Can I speak to the manager?' And my husband, who's up there, was like, 'Yeah, that's me,' and they're like, 'Can we speak privately?' And they look terrified. Super, super scared. They were like, 'We're so sorry.'"
Related: The suspect threw a brick through the front door but there wasn't any money in the cash register.
Schwartz said her husband reassured the boys, telling them that it "wasn't a great choice" but reminding them that "we've all made mistakes."
"My husband's like 'We've all been there, we've all done something we shouldn't have. Thank you for coming in and apologizing.' We were absolutely shocked that they came back," Schwartz said. "And then the boys offered to make it right. They were like, 'What can we do, can we paint over it?' (My husband) was like, 'If you want to, you don't have to.' And so they came back and repainted over it. It was amazing."
Story continues

Schwartz said she shared the story on social media to put out a message of positivity and grace, but was shocked by the online response.
"We were completely floored. We're just a little mom-and-pop coffee shop So it was really incredible to see that people responded well," she said. "We want to be able to give second chances and celebrate people being brave and coming forward and saying, 'Hey, I've made a mistake.' For us to have that opportunity to extend grace and mercy that we've all needed at different points in our lives for different things is a really great opportunity for us as parents to show our own children, 'Hey, you're going to make mistakes, and it's OK.'"
While the graffiti has been painted over, Schwartz said she and her husband are still looking to find a local artist to paint a mural on one of the business' walls. The pair is also going to add a new fence to their property so that they can work with a charitable organization, Shower the People, a Nashville group who has outfitted a bus with showers and laundry supplies for unhoused people in the city.
"We're going to be partnering with them and adding a fence to the back of our building so that we can offer hygiene kits that will just hang on that fence for anybody to pick up and have what they need," Schwartz said. "And that connection only happened because they saw (our post). These are little connections that are going to make a huge difference. It has absolutely nothing to do with us as a business, but we really believe that we should be not only a business but constantly try to reach out and empower and uplift others."

"I don't know what they can do under the present circumstances. Harry has got to wake up to what's going on. It's a very unpleasant situation and I don't think it's going to be the right moment this week," Hugo Vickers explained about the chances of Prince Harry and Prince William reconciling when they reunite to honor their late mother, Princess Diana, on Thursday: "Harry is so under the thumb of Meghan it is not really possible until he emerges from that" (via Daily Express).
Vickers continued by describing the prince as having "thrown his lot in" with Meghan Markle, while accusing him of "slagging off his family." Fellow royal author, Robert Lacey, described Harry and William as being "at each other's throats"at Prince Philip's funeralearlier this year (via Cosmopolitan). While all eyes will be on the royal siblings during the unveiling of the Diana statue, the view of many royal writers seems to be that Harry has burned his bridges completely.

This is the latest installment of The Oregonian/OregonLives advice column, Why Tho? by Lizzy Acker. Lizzys advice first appears in our weekly advice newsletter. Want to get it early? Subscribe now.
Dear Lizzy,
Ive lived in my neighborhood for almost 30 years. The first 15 were great. Everyone got along, lent and borrowed tools, dug each others cars out of the snow, celebrated holidays, babysat back and forth, helped with school assignments, etc. Over time kids grew up, seniors aged, people moved in and out; somewhere along the line, we became the Boo Radleys of our subdivision.
My wife and I had a misunderstanding with a neighbor many years ago. She said we agreed to pay half for a new fence she needed for a dog she planned to buy. We said we were happy with the existing fence, but were willing to consider contributing, though we had questions about price, style, etc. She assured us the fence building was down the road and wed talk again, but when we returned from vacation a few weeks later the fence was mid-install. She was furious when we declined to pay half the excessive bill her friend presented to us when it was done. Somehow gossip about us reneging on our promise spread through the development.
Since then anything that happens near us is interpreted through this lens. Case in point: Parkgoers left a bag of trash in our front yard a night before trash pick-up. Our trash can was full so I put the bag of trash in a neighbors half-empty can on the curb. The next morning I discovered this neighbor had emptied the trash all over our front yard and driveway and started a rumor that we were stealing services from him.
Were some of the few original residents left in the neighborhood. Id hoped that if we just bided our time, the old-timers would move and we could start fresh with the new folks, but the other old-timers, and even some of the newcomers, seem to be continuing to trash us the minute anyone new moves in. Example: I was just getting to know a new couple when suddenly they gave me the cold shoulder. I asked if Id done something to offend them. The husband whirled around with an angry red face, jabbed his pointer finger in my face and said, Weve been warned about you!
Were surrounded by people who shun us, people who have no firsthand knowledge of the thing theyre shunning us about. They seem to be bonding over gossip about us. Its really uncomfortable.
Any suggestions?
Boo
Dear Boo,
This is a tricky, tricky question and I do not envy your predicament. Neighbors are one of those things you cant easily change that can make your life very difficult.
But I think you need to start by taking an unflinching inventory of what actually happened with your neighbors.
The fence is an unfortunate situation and I would say your neighbor acted inappropriately. Still, with a fence on a shared property line, according to the law, you are obligated to pay half.
Have you ever paid anything for the fence? Are you still neighbors with these people? I would start there. Pay for half the fence or pay for it to be cleaned up and fixed. It may be through gritted teeth, but, in hindsight, being the bigger person may have saved you years of trouble.
As far as the garbage, this is another unfortunate situation. The neighbor whose can you put the trash in probably didnt know it wasnt your trash because you didnt communicate that to them. You dont know if they had plans to fill their can up. Because you and your neighbors have communicated only through actions and not actual words, theres a lot you all dont know.
So you need to start communicating. Write a heartfelt note to the garbage can neighbors. Apologize, for real and not in a qualified way.
Then maybe consider getting involved in your neighborhood in a concrete way. Adopt your block and start picking up trash and meeting people in a positive way. Start or join a Neighborhood Emergency Team and help your neighborhood prepare for emergencies.
Then, invite all your neighbors over for a barbecue or for popsicles. Try talking to them. Try hearing their side.
If all else fails, sell your house, make a ton of money, and move to a new neighborhood. Once you get there, remember, sometimes when you pay for half a fence, you are actually paying for a lot more than just a fence.

State and county officials were called to a Northern Westchester condominium complex where there was a new report of a bear sighting.
Westchester County Police received a call at approximately 10:40 a.m. on Tuesday, June 29, where there was a report of a bear near a dumpster in the area of Victoria Drive and the Guard Hill condo complex in Mount Kisco.
A County Police spokesperson said that the bear was then spotted scaling a fence and making the rounds through a backyard before heading into a nearby wooded area.
There were no reports of any altercations with the bear and any nearby residents.
Westchester County Police responded to the scene and notified the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, which also sent crews to the area to investigate.
According to environment officials, residents should not leave garbage cans or any food outside to help avoid an encounter with a bear. Bears should never be approached, surrounded, or cornered, as bears will aggressively defend themselves if they feel threatened."
Be especially cautious around cubs, as mother bears are very protected, officials said. Never run from a bear; stay calm, speak in a loud and calm voice, and slowly back away from a safe distance. Make loud noises by shouting or banging pots to scare the bear away."

The need for secured assets and aspirations to own spacious homes as remote working is fast becoming the new norm is driving sales of residential properties across the country. Further, investors are also warming up to Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs), Niranjan Hiranandani, national president at National Real Estate Development Council (NAREDCO).
In an interview withBusinessLine, Hiranandani, who is also the managing director of real estate firm Hiranandani Group, is of the opinion that the regulatory aspects have also brought in a safe and secure environment to the sector. Edited excerpts:
This year, housing sales across major cities have been on the rise? Where is this demand coming from?
The disruptive pandemic has predominantly reinforced the value of owned houses. The need for a secured asset that offers stability and safety in crisis is a goldmine investment against volatile assets. The remote working trend further fuel the urge to own a large spacious home in peripheral cities at attractive price points to integrate new normal living conditions.
In addition, market dynamics and policy regime are skewed towards nudging the fence-sitters to convert into the first-time home buyers and existing ones to upgrade into luxury homes catalysed by fiscal growth levers.
After the initial hesitation, REITs are gaining ground, and despite the pandemic, there were two successful public issues?
REITs are an alternative option for investment in real estate at a low unit price entry point. It reflects growing confidence in commercial real estate as an asset class. The Indian real estate investor has gradually warmed up to REITs. The two successful public issues are just the beginning of what will gradually grow in investor confidence.
Recently Maharashtra Urban Development ministry has amended the Unified Development Control and Promotion Regulations, allowing 5 per cent amenity space for construction in plots. Your comments?
The recent amendment (notification is awaited) aims to infuse positivity for commercial real estate development. If up to 5 FSI is allowed for commercial business districts, then the move will be perceived to augment more commercial real estate spaces to be developed, which will create more employment opportunities. This will also foster the development of more commercial business districts (CBDs) in the state, ensuring equal development across and not just the leading commercial cities like Mumbai and Pune. The move should augur well for the states economic growth. It will also allow economies of scale to positively impact the viability of commercial projects.
A lot of residential projects in the country, including ultra-luxury ones, are marred by delays?
The Indian real estate sector was rebooted with structural policy reforms, and the pandemic was a nail in the coffin. The industry suffered from liquidity starving, muted demand, subdued investment, hindered sales velocity, disrupted supply chain, skyrocketing prices of essential raw materials, and acute migrant labour crisis. These challenges uprooted many developers in crisis and stalled up the designated timelines.
With mission unlocking, the industry witnessed excellent sales velocity in lieu of fiscal stimulus but the resurgence of the second Covid wave derailed the growth trajectory. The authorities have been considering a timeline extension to cope up with the delays. Many of the branded developers with strong financial discipline and proven track records will fast-track the work progress and assure timely delivery.
Covid-19 has shuttered smaller players across various industries, while the stronger, larger entities have survived. Did the pandemic have a similar effect on real estate as well?
Any economic crisis and the Covid-19 pandemic fits the description perfectly first impacts smaller players across industries, as surviving such challenging situations needs deep pockets. For financially weak players, recent regulatory jolts led to a difficult ground for navigating, and Covid-19 impacted many projects profitabilities and viability of the business.
The over-leveraged players opt to deleverage by consolidation, joint development, asset-light model, monetisation, mergers to re-anchor the sinking ship.
RERA has brought in some amount of transparency and accountability to the sector?
RERA is moving in the right direction and is taking the industry to the right aspects of accountability. The regulatory aspect has brought in a safe and secure environment, one in which we see unscrupulous elements being weeded out. Obviously, this also leads to enhanced customer confidence.
On Greenbases, an industrial and warehousing platform of Hiranandani Group, future plans?
Greenbase has been working at delivering a holistic slew of offerings for end-users, and there are geographies where we are already working on creating logistics and light industrial parks.
As the vaccination drive gains pace, we are bullish on the Indian economy and the sustained demand for logistics and light industrial parks. Some locations (near Pune, Nasik and Oragadam, Chennai) are work in progress, while in some other locations, the parks are still on the drawing board.

MLB Mascot History
Baseball mascots have been a key part of entertainment in the baseball industry since 1964, when the New York Mets opened their stadium and introduced us to Mr. Met. The San Diego Chicken in 1977 sparked an increase in popularity in mascots, while only showing up sporadically throughout that 1977 season. The following 1978, saw the Philadelphia Phillies introduce to the world the Phillie Phanatic. Since then, all but three professional baseball teams have official mascots, the New York Yankees, Los Angeles Dodgers, and the Los Angeles Angels. Today, the MLB has five mascots in the Mascot Hall of Fame; Phillie Phanatic, Sluggerrr, the San Diego Chicken, Mr. Met, Slider, with several others that have been up for Hall of Fame contention.
The New York Yankees short lived mascot in the 1980s was quickly given up on, due to the mascot getting beaten up and the fans not wanting him. Since then, the Yankees have tried having baseballs ballpark food as mascots in the 1990s, but have not has an official baseball mascot since then.
The Los Angeles Angels baseball mascot was the Rally Monkey in the early 2000s. The Rally Monkey would dance to Jump Around by House of Pain and would hold a sign that said Rally Time!. The Rally Monkey is to believed to help the Angels win the World Series in 2002 when they were trailing 3-2 and facing elimination. The Rally Monkey has had an increase in popularity in 2009 when the team reached the playoffs once more.
The Los Angeles Dodgers have never had an official mascot, but they do borrow a mascot from the NHL team in Los Angeles, Bailey. Bailey is named after a scout that had died in the 9/11 terrorists attacks. As a substitute for not having a mascot, the Dodgers will have celebrities come in and support the team.
A classic baseball mascot. One of, if not, the best mascots in ANY league. Entertaining, funny, and great dancer.
2. Mr. and Mrs Met (New York Mets)
The best mascot couple in the game. Mrs. Met chose the original and one of the best mascots to be in a relationship with.
3. Gapper, Rosie Red, Mr. Redlegs, and Mr. Red (Cincinnati Reds)
A great bunch of mascots. Gapper is defiantly the one that steals the show from the others.
4. Wally the Green Monster (Boston Red Socks)
I do not know what Wally really is, but he is definitely a green monster. Goes well with the Green Monster wall at Fenway Park.
5. Dinger (Colorado Rockies)
A very cool mascot. A triceratops skull was found when building Coors Field, so the choice for the mascot seems obvious.
6. Mariner Moose (Seattle Mariners)
A well designed moose mascot that embraces the northern culture.
7. Pirates Parrot (Pittsburgh Pirates)
Clever. A parrot is definitely a pirates mascot. Who doesnt love green and fluffy?
8. The Oriole Bird (Baltimore Orioles)
Not bad. The name doesnt really stand out though. The Orioles could have though of something more clever for the bird.
9. Lou Seal (San Francisco Giants)
Lou is one cool cat (seal).
10. Billy the Marlin (Miami Marlins)
Little to much of a shine. Other than that Billy is friendly looking and resembles an actual marlin.
11. Paws (Detroit Tigers)
Looks like a tiger and represents the teams name. Paws is a mascot that I would approach and ask to hang out with.
12. Ace (Toronto Blue Jays)
One of the few mascots that look like what the team is named after. A few extra feathers and Ace will be looking fly.
13. Sluggerrr ( Kansas City Royals)
A nice looking mascot and a nice touch with the crown making him royalty, but when I think of a slugger, I think of a baseball bat and not a lion.
14. Stomper (Oakland Athletics)
Cute and good looking mascot do not understand the connection between an elephant and athletic.
15. Swinging Friar (San Diego Padres)
Looks like a friar and is modeled after someone who use to show up to the Padres games dressed as a friar. Definitely would intimidate the other team with the way he looks.
16. Clark (Chicago Cubs)
Looks like a bear kind of. The eyes dont do it for me.
17. Orbit (Houston Astros)
This mascot is truly out of this world. Needs a little bit of sprucing up with his fur though.
18. Bernie Brewer (Milwaukee Brewers)
Baseball mascots, and mascots in general, need a good design and Bernie is lacking that. Bernie also needs a bit of a trim.
19. Screech (Washington Nationals)
The Eagle is the U.S.A.s national bird. Screech gets the point across, but barely. Has the potential to be so much better than what it is.
20. Raymond (Tampa Bay Rays)
Everyone (doesnt) love Raymond. Their logo has a manta ray on it, so why not use a manta ray as a mascot?
21. Homer the Brave (Atlanta Braves)
A simple baseball-head mascot. You cant go wrong with it and it doesnt look all that bad, but it just does not fit the name of the Braves.
22. T.C. Bear (Minnesota Twins)
Simple mascot. If this is the Twins, then why is there not a second mascot?
23. D. Baxter the Bobcat (Arizona Diamondbacks)
I thought that a diamondback was a snake? Bobcats are supposed to be intimidating and not a kind animal. Baxter covers the not kind part, at least to the eyes hes unkind.
24. Southpaw (Chicago White Sox)
When I think of Southpaw, I think of the fighting style, not Wally the Green Monsters ugly cousin.
25. Rangers Captain (Texas Rangers)
This looks like the horse that I drew in first grade. Just a bad design and creepy looking.
26. Fredbird (St. Louis Cardinals)
I have seen many cardinals before and I can safely say that this is not what one looks like. A simple redesign will make Fredbird look so much better.
27. Slider (Cleveland Indians)
I thought that the Browns was the worst thing in Cleveland, but I was wrong. Its almost like Barney the Dinosaur caught a disease and never recovered.

Your patriotic fervor wont have to go home by nighttime in the City of Falls Church, but there wont be much of a reason to stay here.
Thats because, for the second year in a row, Falls Church wont be hosting a fireworks spectacle for residents on the field of the now-Meridian High Schools turf. Finishing up the construction on Meridians campus makes it too unsafe for the pyrotechnics to find a spot where they can launch the fireworks for droves of locals to see.
Theyre connecting the middle school to the high school for a little bit, and the fields are still completely under construction, said Danny Schlitt, the director of the City of Falls Churchs Recreation and Parks department. We just didnt have the ability to line everything up and have everything ready to go.
The City isnt totally bailing on Fourth of July fun. The reading of the Declaration of Independence will return at 2 p.m. on Sunday, though this time outdoors at Falls Church Episcopal (bring a chair). There is another holiday-themed scavenger hunt that younger Falls Church residents can participate in from 9 a.m. 6:30 p.m. on Independence Day (Sunday). Scavengers will have to find 13 historical markers throughout the City and match each one of the 13 colonies they find on that historical marker on the form they print out.
Sudden M Pac will also be playing in Cherry Hill Park from 4:30 6 p.m. for those who want to take in a show before they find a spot to watch a show.
But dont make plans for the fireworks to return next year just yet.
I intend to meet with school representatives, the City Fire Marshal and a pyrotechnician to determine whether or not, with the placement of the new building, we can still hold a legitimate fireworks show for thousands of people, Schlitt said. That is where we are moving forward and hoping that we can once again have a firework shoot in the future on site up there.
The way its always been done is that the fireworks would set up their mortars in the deep centerfield of the adjacent baseball field. The fire marshal would go by and make sure it had the proper spacing set up so itd be safe for people on the synthetic turf field.
State regulations require that, for every inch in diameter of the shells being fired, it requires 100 feet of separation between the mortars themselves and the audiences. With the City using three-inch shells these past years, that means 300 feet of distance are needed.
Achieving that isnt really a problem for Schlitt he mentioned how advanced pyrotechnics have become that fireworks can be shot off in certain small, enclosed spaces. It mainly comes down to the fire marshals approval, and the school systems comfort level with such a production.
Ive talked to some pyrotechnicians and they firmly believe we can pull off a show that is worthy of what the community and the citizenry expect, Schlitt said. It really then becomes a decision point between the fire marshal and the schools, since they own the facilities and just put millions of dollars into the new school, as to whether or not we can safely shoot.
This move away from a fireworks show didnt surprise Schlitt. He said he knew two years ago that there was no chance the 2020 fireworks show was going to happen, and felt that this year would have only been possible if the schools construction was well ahead of schedule.
For those looking for other shows nearby, they should check out some celebrations nearby jurisdictions are holding.Fairfax City will hold its 55th annual Independence Day parade on July 3.
The parade will begin at 10 a.m. at 4100 Chain Bridge Road, Fairfax, rain or shine and will loop around downtown Fairfax, along Chain Bridge Road, Main Street, University Drive and Armstrong Street. Nine high school marching bands as well as many large inflatable parade balloons, floats and clowns will be some of the entries.
On July 4, there will be an evening show with music and dancing at 6:30 p.m. at Fairfax High School (3501 Lion Run, Fairfax). On-stage entertainment begins at 6:30 p.m. with a fireworks display that follows. The rain date for the fireworks only is July 5. Items that may puncture the synthetic turf, smoking, alcohol and animals (except service animals) are not permitted on the football field.
The Town of Herndon will also be holding a fireworks show on the night of July 4, with the show expected to start at 9 p.m. The Town of Vienna, likewise, will hold fireworks display that night at Yeonas Park (1319 Ross Drive, Vienna SW), starting at 9:30 p.m.
Of course, there will also be fireworks on the National Mall inside Washington, D.C. A good vantage point for those is Gravelly Point Park in Arlington or along the waterfront in Old Town Alexandria.Schlitt ever the optimist did say he wouldnt rule out a show for next year. Right now, he puts the probability of it happening around 60 percent.
If we figure theres any kind of safety risk, then well certainly have to see if we can come up with a Plan B, Schlitt said.

Another Catholic church in western Canada has burned down, but this time the structure was not on Indigenous land.
Historic Saint-Jean-Baptiste in Morinville, Alberta, was destroyed in a fire Wednesday that officials are suspecting was arson.
Today in Morinville, leglise de Saint-Jean-Baptiste was destroyed in what appears to have been a criminal act of arson, Albertas premier, Jason Kenney, said in a statement. This historic church was in the heart of Morinville and a key part of the spiritual life of Albertas francophone community.
Iain Bushell, Morinvilles general manager of infrastructure and community services, told the National Post that the early morning blaze was so fierce that firefighters could not enter the 114-year-old building, and the roof collapsed a short time later. He said the church was of very old construction so an awful lot of wood, so it went very quickly and it was a very difficult fire to fight.
