Report: Underwater grasses resurge in the Chesapeake Bay

    - April 27, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The abundance of underwater grasses throughout the Chesapeake Bay resurged by 24 percent between 2012 and 2013, reversing a three-year decline, the Chesapeake Bay Program said this week.

Scientists credit better water quality for the "modest" recovery of eelgrass in the bay's shallow, salty waters and the "rapid expansion" of widgeongrass in the mid-bay. The health of underwater grasses is considered a barometer for overall bay health.

"These bay grasses are the canary in the cage, and an indication of water quality and of the efforts to improve water quality," Robert Orth of the Virginia Institute of Marine Science said when he helped release the new numbers.

VIMS, in Gloucester Point, has worked for years to restore eelgrass to the bay, seeing great success seeding the tidal bays of the Eastern Shore. The institute is affiliated with the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg and with CPB a regional partnership of federal, state and local agencies, academic institutions and environmental and nonprofit groups. The partnership is tasked with protecting and restoring the bay, which deteriorated for decades from pollution and nutrient overload from stormwater runoff.

Every year from late spring to early fall, grass beds in the bay are tracked using aerial surveys. While the data is still gathered the same way, this year the grasses were mapped according to salinity zones rather than geographic zones to better reflect different species and how they respond to environmental stressors, explained Lee Karrh, a biologist with the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. The waters of the bay range from no salinity to sea-water strength salinity.

The latest surveys show an uptick in grass beds from 48,195 acres to 59,927 acres, or about a third of the ultimate goal of 185,000 acres. Orth said most of that increase came from a boom in widgeongrass in the mid-bay

The CBP also updated decades of its past surveys to correlate with the new salinity zone map, Karrh said. Between 1984 and 2013, the data show:

Tidal Fresh Salinity Zone: In the no-salt waters of the bay, grass abundance ranged from a low of 6,900 acres (1995) to a high of 25,481 acres (2008), averaging 12,399 acres. From 2012 to 2013, the zone's grass beds increased by 1,841 acres to 13,990 acres.

Oligohaline Salinity Zone: In the bay's slightly salty waters, abundance ranged from 653 acres (1984) to 13,918 acres (2005), averaging 6,680 acres. Between 2012 and 2013, grasses increased by 78 acres to 5,590 acres.

Mesohaline Salinity Zone: In the bay's moderately salty waters, grass beds ranged from 15,636 acres (1984) to 48,443 acres (2005), averaging 27,851 acres. From 2012 to 2013, they increased 5,598 acres to 25,579 acres.

For researcher, World Cup is a grass-roots endeavor

    - April 27, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Like most kids growing up in Brazil, Roberto Gurgel dreamed of being on the field for a World Cup.

That never happened. So this summer, Gurgel is settling for the next-best thing by helping to build five of the fields that will be used for the first World Cup in his native country in 64 years.

Gurgel is executive director of research for Sod Solutions, a South Carolina-based company that develops and licenses varieties of grass. One of those varieties, a deep blue-green Bermuda called Celebration, will be used in five of the 12 World Cup venues this summer.

Gurgel said the Maracana, the stadium in Rio de Janeiro that will play host to the final, as well as venues in Brasilia, Salvador, Belo Horizonte and Fortaleza, all have specific issues that required a unique turf like Celebration, which grows differently from most Bermuda.

"It has a very good ability to grow under a significant amount of shade," he said. "Celebration was selected for those stadiums because a lot of them have very tall structures and places for the fans that project a lot of shade on the grass."

The grass is also durable and recovers quickly but it doesn't do well in places like Sao Paulo, which is expected to be cool.

"There's a lot of science involved. It's kind of a tricky thing," said Gurgel, who has made several trips to the sod farm in Brazil where the grass is being grown, then visited again after the grass was installed ahead of last year's Confederations Cup.

He'll follow the World Cup on television, though, and admits he watches the games a little differently from most fans.

"I look more for the grass," he said. "I'm all the time hoping that the camera zooms in to the play so I can look at the grass and not so much at the players or the game. So yes, lately I cheer more for the grass than for the team itself."

Which isn't to say he doesn't have a favorite squad.

Frisco Whole Foods Market opening marked with blessings, bustle

    - April 27, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Before its doors officially open Tuesday, Whole Foods Market is offering tours to the public, complete with free samples.

Saturday from 9 a.m. to 7:45 p.m. anyone can walk into the store, learn about it from an employee (or team member, as Whole Foods calls them) and taste products from about a dozen Colorado vendors.

The countrys leading natural and organic grocer held a sneak-peek of the Frisco store for local government officials, ski resort representatives and friends of employees Thursday. The tour began with a blessing by Alex Stark, the companys feng shui consultant.

Stark stood in front of the store and mixed together 99 drops of gin (to represent the heavens), rice (to represent people) and cinnabar (a red powder to represent the earth), explained associate team leader Anthony Morici. Stark also hung crystal balls in specific spots in the back rooms.

Then visitors sampled products: goat cheese from Avalanche Cheese Co. in Basalt, pasture-raised beef from Crystal River Meats in Carbondale, Noosa Yoghurt from Fort Collins and cookies from Kim & Jakes, a gluten-free company in Boulder.

    GO LOCAL

The company prides itself on being environmentally conscious and involved in the community.

Those fond of preventing food waste through Dumpster diving should know the Whole Foods receptacles are tall and difficult to get into. And they wont have much food in them.

Part of every employees job is monitoring perishables for blemishes and preventing spoilage. For example, instead of throwing out wilting spinach, Gengel said, the store will use it in its pizzas. Other foods that dont quite meet the stores standards will be donated to the Family and Intercultural Resource Center or composted.

Items that make the Frisco store unique include hand-sized dessert pies named after the town and doughnuts stuffed every morning with custom fillings.

Police use Taser to arrest Washington parolee after bizarre series of events

    - April 27, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

NAPLES, Uintah County Officers used a Taser to subdue a parolee from Washington state Saturday after they say he crashed through fences at two businesses and tried to steal three trucks.

An officer was on patrol about 3 p.m. near 1500 East and 600 South when she saw a man drive a green pickup truck through a chain link fence at Lone Wolf Wireline Inc., according to Naples Police Chief Mark Watkins.

The man got out of the pickup, climbed into a truck parked outside the business and apparently tried to get it started, Watkins said. When the man spotted the approaching officer, he got back in the green pickup and drove off.

As the officer followed, the man crashed through two chain link fences at nearby Raptor Industries, Watkins said. The man then got out of the green pickup and attempted to take a truck from that business, but went back to his truck and drove off again as the officer closed in, the chief said.

The man circled back to Lone Wolf Wireline with multiple officers pursuing him. He left the green truck a third time, climbed into a large crane truck and drove it a short distance before hitting a cement wall at low speed, Watkins said.

"One of the officers was alongside the crane truck at that point and used a Taser on the guy," the chief said. "It had no effect on him and the fight was on."

Police were able to get the man into handcuffs after one of the officers said the Taser would be used again if the man didn't stop fighting, Watkins said.

James Robert Olson, 30, was taken to Ashley Regional Medical Center where tests confirmed he was under the influence of methamphetamine, the chief said. He is expected to be booked into the Uintah County Jail once he is released from the hospital.

Watkins said a records check run following Olson's arrest showed he is on parole out of Washington state, where he was released from prison in November after serving time for armed robbery and possession of meth. Court records in Utah show Olson has misdemeanor convictions in Duchesne County for assault and violation of a protective order.

B.C. bids farewell to beer garden fences

    - April 27, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Rob Easton, The Canadian Press Published Saturday, April 26, 2014 1:44PM PDT Last Updated Saturday, April 26, 2014 7:28PM PDT

The first round of changes to B.C.s liquor laws came into effect Saturday to much fanfare from the provincial government.

And while the government touts free-range drinking to become the norm as it tears down beer garden fencing around the province, many local festival organizers say little will change this summer.

"Unless we gated the entire perimeter of the event, then it really makes no sense for us to get too excited about this legislation, said John Orysik, media director at the TD International Jazz Festival that sees thousands of people gather in front of the Vancouver Art Gallery.

The new rules allow organizers to get rid of separated beer gardens in favour of more open liquor sales including mixed drinks like a gin and tonic that can be carried around festival grounds.

But according to the regulations, festival organizers wanting to allow wider liquor movement must have controlled entry and exit points, which is a non-starter for the jazz fest.

Right now, events are free to the public and accessible to everyone. Thats the whole idea, so its not gated, said Orysik.

The Pacific National Exhibition a prime candidate with its controlled entry and long established vendors will see few changes this year but organizers do have an eye on the future.

"The analysis for an event as large as ours might take several months, even six months to a year to decide if it's the right fit, said spokesperson Laura Balance. "At this point we would be looking at that with an eye to 2015.

The Vancouver Folk Music Festival is gated but organizers are concerned more alcohol would turn a fun family weekend into a booze-fest.
