Last minute company coming and you have a icy sidewalk? A fast way to make it not slippery is to use cat litter or fireplace ash if you have a fireplace. Just spread either along the sidewalk and your guests will have better traction.

I came home during a freezing rain storm on Sunday Night. My cement steps were treacherous and I was out of Ice Salt and table salt. I racked my brain to think of what I could use and went to make myself a pot of coffee then I thought of the used coffee grounds. They don't disintegrate so I tried them on my steps. They are still there and have not frozen over and are doing a fine job of keeping my stairs free of ice and snow. They don't seem to track in either.

Our list of suppliers for metal kitchen counter top edging continues to grow with the addition of Eagle Moulding, a distributor in Maple Grove, Minnesota. Eagle Mouldings large inventory includes a two styles of aluminum counter top edgings, in avariety ofsizes. Metal counter top edging is a very popular way to inject authentic vintage style into a retro kitchen.Eagle Moulding is the direct supplier to many furniture manufacturers and, in fact, I see at least one of these edgingsexplicitly mentioned over on the Bars & Booth moldings page.
Nosing around Eagles website (how fun am I on a Saturday night??) I also see they have plain face nosing. Go nose around I bet youre just like me and think there is no better way to waste time than to surf through a few hundred varieties of metal trim to imagine potential uses.
For example,Thor:Wouldnt the coves above alsowork for our retro countertopinstallations???? And, this is off-topic, but before I die, I really want some slat wall.
Prices are not listed on the website you can call or email RetroTrims.com with your enquiries. But prices are no big secret, Thor sent me the price list and as an example, the 1-1/4 tee molding (bottom row) is just over $14 for a 12 length. The next size up, the 1-1/2 aluminum countertop edging is about $27 for 12.There is no minimum$100 order you can just order what you need.
I also like that the webpage shows us how tee moldings work. Above, left: You cut out the notch to make a bend and center and right: You need a wing cutter to cut into your countertop edge, then you fit the tee in the groove. Thanks to an unidentified reader who must livenear Eagle Mouldings who told one of the new owners of the company, Thor Smith, about the blog. Now, Thor is an advertiser over in the right-hand column with a special page just for these retro-style countertop edgings, RetroTrims.com. (This story was not part of the advertising deal.)

Decorative wood moulding has been critical design element in architecture for decades, but it doesnt have to be stuffy or traditional. In fact, one of the best ways to add interest to a wall is to add some kind of moulding, whether its a chair rail, crown moulding, or wainscoting. If youre looking to give a tired old space new life with a fresh look, consider moulding as an affordable option.
If you arent sure where to begin, first consider adding crown moulding, which is the wood moulding that crowns the top of the wall. It sits right where the ceiling and wall meet, and often, the addition of crown moulding can make your walls appear much taller, giving the illusion of a larger room.
If you already have crown moulding in your home, think about something more dramatic, like the moulding shown above which creates almost picture frame-like panels on the wall. To learn more about the types of moulding, and what theyre called, explore ourFall Style Guide.
When dreaming up the possibilities for decorative trim on your wall, the possibilities are really endless. Consider different shapes and sizes, and more importantly, think about the style youre trying to achieve. If youre going for a more traditional look, stick to wainscoting and think door and window trim. If youre looking for something a little more unexpected and dramatic, consider creating panels with trim or using ceiling medallions to create a pattern on the wall.
Have you ever thought about using a common home element in an unexpected way? These ceiling medallions (usually used to visually anchor a light fixture to the ceiling) were first painted then adhered to the wall to create a pattern. Pretty chic, right?

My tree is dangerous due to weakness and ill health
Your trees safety can be compromised due to many things such as storm damage, pest and disease activity, or growth abnormality. Correct and timely Tree Pruning by an arborist can prevent eventual takedown being necessary but by this point it is often too late. As valuable as trees are we believe your safety and security has to come first. As a qualified arborist we are trained to recognise weakness due to many different causes and can let you know if taking your tree down is the only option.
In older suburbs such as North Shore Sydney, this is a common problem. We understand that sometimes you are left with a tree planting problem caused by whoever owned your property before you. Lifting pathways, driveways and broken water pipes are just some of the damage you might be experiencing if the wrong type of tree was planted in the wrong location. Act now before the problems get even bigger. Tree lopping or tree removal may be your only solution.
Be proactive! As an arborist our knowledge of trees means that we can predict how big your tree can grow. This means that we are able to offer an expert opinion to council and any other interested parties as to the potential for future problems both above and below ground.
Thats our job. We are familiar with dealing with council regulations, especially in the North Shore Sydney area, and will guide you through the process of correctly completing the requested paperwork when it is needed. We will do the paperwork for you.
Generally every council has a list of trees that require special permission for work to be carried out. This is called their Tree Preservation Order. This does vary from council to council as different trees are considered pests in some areas and not others.
Many people dont realise that there is a lot more that can be done for a problem tree than just take it down. We provide a range of tree services to North Shore Sydney including, tree lopping and tree pruning as well as a variety of other arborist services. Our qualified arborist can give you some other options. Let us come and see how we can help. We service all suburbs of Sydney and are located in North Shore Sydney.

GOSHEN A significant tree removal project is in the works for a section of Westwood Road near IU Health Goshen Hospital. Exactly when the trees will be removed, however, has yet to be determined.
John Stout, supervisor of forestry operations for the Northern Indiana Public Service Company, recently reported that as many as 12 trees along Westwood Road from Main Street down to the Goshen Cancer Center have been slated for removal due to concerns about overhanging power lines in the area.
Weve talked to the property owners, talked to the city planning department, the city forester... Everybodys aware of whats happening, Stout said during a phone interview Friday afternoon. The trees are tall-growing species that were planted directly underneath the lines that service the hospital, and are incompatible with the site.
Joe Dervin, a resident of the Historic Racemere Peninsula Neighborhood located adjacent to the hospital, said he noticed several months ago that the trees along Westwood Road had red dots painted on their trucks. Having worked for the NIPSCO company for 35 years, he said he knew immediately what those little red marks meant.
Its unfortunate, because theyre nice trees, Dervin said Friday. But I realize its also a main feeder into the hospital, and that has to be maintained. ... I knew the time was probably coming that they were going to take them out. People love their trees, and I do too, but there comes a time when sometimes they need to be taken down.
Dervin, who serves as president of the Historic Racemere Peninsula Neighborhood Association, had his suspicions confirmed by Mark Podgorski, vice president of hospital operations for IU Health Goshen Hospital, who informed Dervin of NIPSCOs plans. Dervin in turn sent the information on to the other members of the neighborhood association.

CHARLOTTE, N.C.
Piedmont tree experts said removing a tree from a home in South Park is one of the toughest jobs they've seen.
Since Saturday, they've gone to more than half a dozen calls across Charlotte.
They say older, large trees can easily fall with heavy rain and high winds.
Eyewitness News reporter Paige Hansen sent pictures Monday morning from Topping Place, near Park Road. No one was hurt when a tree crashed down.
Tree removal experts said with more rain on the way, they expect to stay busy this week. Tonight on Eyewitness News starting at 5 p.m. Hansen will have the steps you can take to protect your family and home.

Preventing and Treating Iron Chlorosis in Trees and Shrubs by Michael Kuhns, Extension Forestry Specialist, and Rich Koenig, Extension Soils Specialist
Note: See What is Iron Chlorosis and What Causes It? (click on link) for information on causes of iron chlorosis.
Diagnosis As noted above, go to What is Iron Chlorosis and What Causes It? for more information on what iron chlorosis is and its causes. Briefly, iron chlorosis is a yellowing of plant leaves caused by iron deficiency, usually in high pH soils (pH above 7.0). Other causes of yellowing need to be ruled out first, however. For example, leaf yellowing can be due to insect or disease problems (pathogenic diseases caused by fungi or other organisms), herbicide misuse, or a history of over watering. Some tree cultivars have even been developed to have yellow foliage on purpose -- an example is the 'Sunburst' honeylocust ('Gleditsia triacanthos' var. inermis 'Sunburst').
Pin oak with severe iron chlorosis.
The same pin oak 6 weeks later after injection with ferric ammonium citrate.
Soil application of ferrous sulfate and granular sulfur.
