Calpine Sheds Six Power Plants in $1.6B Deal

    - April 21, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

HOUSTON (The Deal) --Privately held power and energy infrastructure owner LS Power Equity Advisors said Monday it agreed to pick up six natural gas-fired, combined-cycle power plants in the southeastern U.S. from Calpine (CPN) of Houston for $1.57 billion in cash.

The plants are in Gabriel, La.; Calhoun County, S.C.; Decatur, Ala.; Mobile, Ala.; Coweta, Okla.; and Pace, Fla., and generate 3,500 megawatts. They feed power to investor-owned utilities, municipal utilities, cooperatives and other market players.

Analysts at Tudor, Pickering, Holt & Co. Securities Inc. wrote in a note that the region is oversupplied and utility dominated, leading to subpar returns for independent power plant generators in the area. They think LS Power wants the plants because their value could increase after 2015 when coal retirements begin to be driven by the Environmental Protection Agency's Mercury and Air Toxics Standards. The analysts wrote that Calpine would rather use the proceeds to invest in competitive wholesale power markets such as California, Texas and the mid-Atlantic U.S.

"We see above market asset sales to utilities and co-ops as a distinct possibility over time (2020), but prefer that CPN [Calpine] realizes the value of these assets now and use the cash to invest in core markets versus waiting for possible opportunities to sell at higher multiples to regulated counterparties," they wrote.

Sewer Gas Smells and Septic System Venting Indiana septic …

    - April 21, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Why does my septic system smell bad?

Its a fact, sewage smells bad. If youve walked through the steam of a city manhole or stood down wind of septic pumping truck, you know the odor. We all try to avoid the smell, but some septic systems owners have a hard time evading it.

Sewer gasses are produced throughout your septic system. the gas is created in the tank, piping, distribution box and in the trenches. In a properly vented septic system, the gas produced in the septic system will move upstream through the piping, septic tank and back through the house gravity sewer where it will then rise up through the house vent (called a vent stack) and disperses into the air. These process works because low pressure in the pipe draws the gasses up and out of the vent. Generally speaking, the taller your roof vent, the greater pressure difference and the more effective the venting action. Folks sometimes find that simply extending their vent stack on the roof eliminates the problem of unwanted stink.

Obstructions such as an unvented elbow in the distribution box (on the inlet pipe) or a plug in the sewer line can trap gasses. Unable to escape through the pipes and vent stack, the trapped gasses are now forced to leak out of the ground and cause embarrassing smells. Frank, I think your yard just passed gas!

A failing absorption field can cause water to back-up in the septic tank and completely cover the inlet and outlet pipes. This will also block the path of the gasses and cause your yard to smell like septage.

Therefore, if you are smelling sewer gasses for the very first time, it might mean that your absorption field is beginning to fail.

Sometimes, the venting system works properly but a down draft, caused by winds blowing across the roof a nearby row of trees can bring the odors down into your yard, window or air-conditioning unit. If this is happening to you, you may want to try installing a charcoal vent filter. These filters have become popular with people that cannot find ways to otherwise fix their stinky vent issues.

Minneapolis Water & Sewer Repairs | MN Pipe Installation

    - April 21, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Gene's Water & Sewer is the contractor choice for outside water and sewer installation and repair. Our services include the following:

Gene's Water & Service specialize in the following types of water repairs, and replace pipes with one of the following methods:

Our crew digs an open trench and does the repairs/replacements. Trench repairs are somewhat less costly, and has a significant, experienced contractor base.

A pneumatic tool (hole hog) to pull the pipe into place. This minimizes the amount of digging, which saves customers from additional labor and restoration costs, and a minimum amount of disruption of service.

Has the flow of your waste water stopped or slowed? We repair sewage back-ups that are experiencing these problems.

These repairs are done with a combination of digging and tunneling. Like with the water pipe repairs, they're somewhat more affordable, and has a significant, experienced contractor base.

Also known as pipe bursting repairs. This involves the placement of a new pipe where the old one was, which lessens the need for digging. The process requires a hole in the ground at the house and right of way. Semi-trenchless repairs use a fused pipe, which eliminates the need for joints, and stops infiltration and exfiltration.

A resin-based liner is pulled in place the existing pipe. This is the only true no dig technology, and minimizes the need for digging, meaning customers save on costs associated with labor and restoration. Joints are eliminated, meaning the smoother pipe can increase flow. Infiltration and exfiltration is topped and service disruption is lessened to the customer. The repairs are normally completed in less than a day's time.

Why Clean Your Septic System – Barefoot Septic and Sewer, Inc.

    - April 21, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

What Our Clients Have To Say

"I was afraid that I had waited too long for my system to be cleaned and that there would be an expensive problem. The appointment was easy to make and I didn't have to wait long for it. The men who came were friendly, reassuring, and obviously knew exactly what they were doing. They didn't complain about digging through some very heavy clay soil to get to my tank, and they answered all my questions with good humor. Very good experience. The person who returned the next day to install risers and take care of excess soil followed my instructions to the letter. Am I thankful and impressed? You bet! When they send me a reminder in three years, I won't hesitate to call them for return service."

    - Linda (Hemlock)

If your home is not connected to the public sewer system, all the wastewater your home generates is treated by an "individual wastewater treatment system", commonly called a septic system.

Every time that anyone in your home uses water, the wastewater that is generated as that water goes down the drain is treated in your own yard, on your own property!Just think, every time anyone washes their hands, washes the dishes, runs the clothes washer, takes a shower, or flushes a toilet, all that wastewater needs to be cleaned and returned to the environment.

It is the job of your septic system to clean the wastewater and re-introduce the treated water back into the ground and environment.

It is your job, as a homeowner, to understand how your septic system works and what you must do to maintain your system.

If you are like most people, you know very little about your septic tank system. This is understandable because there have been many myths and misconceptions surrounding septic tank systems and the way they work. Here, we will try to give you a clear understanding of what happens to your household waste after it goes down the drain. As the diagram illustrates, wastewater generated in your household travels outside into the septic system. The most common type of septic system consists of two parts: 1. The septic tank and 2. The leaching system. Some more complicated systems may include aerators, pumping stations, dosing chambers, drop boxes, raised fill leaching systems, or other alternate systems.

The soil pipe that leaves your house empties first into the septic tank.

The septic tank is a large box that is most commonly made out of precast concrete. Some septic tanks are made of metal or plastic. The size of a residential septic tank depends upon the number of bedrooms in the home and the regulations in the county in which it is installed. Typically, a three bedroom home will have a 1250 gallon septic tank and a four bedroom home will have a 1500 gallon septic tank. Smaller homes and older homes may have a 1000 gallon septic tank, or even a smaller tank. While older tanks consist of a single compartment, newer tanks often have 2 compartments. Some homes have more than one tank. When household wastes enter the tank, several things occur:

Ending the winter of my discontent

    - April 21, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Viewpoint

It's not as if I wasn't warned ahead of time. On Dec. 13, 2013, a contrite man stood telling me that the rod and gun club my husband had booked for the staff Christmas party would not be able to accommodate our 50-plus guests.

"What? I can't believe this!" I sat in the truck with a load of Crock-Pots and drinks in the back seat. "What do you mean we can't use the hall? I've got people coming in an hour!"

"The water's froze up, lady. We weren't expecting it so soon this winter. It's been awful cold, you know."

I was relieved. "Oh, I don't need water," I blundered on. "I'll take everything back home and clean it when we're done. We have plenty of drinks. We won't need to turn on the tap. We've even brought our own wood." I must have sounded slightly hysterical to him, but he didn't seem to care that I might break down in tears at any second.

"That's not the problem, lady. It's the other end you don't have. The sewer line is frozen up and without that you're stuck."

Happy Easter from all of us at NCR!

Well, that last word was the bleeped edition of what he really said, but I took no offense because that old English word was exactly what I was.

My husband held on to his rationality and quickly found another place for our party, where things like toilets flushed freely. But it was only the beginning.

Slowly, like a plague, we began to hear stories. So-and-so decided to move south for three months; a city north of us asked its residents to let the taps drip slowly all the time; pipes were bursting in a small town to the west of us; folks down our gravel road had a drain company come and shoot something up their pipes that allowed them to live in their house. Another couple moved into a hotel.

Second Battle of Fallujah – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

    - April 21, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Second Battle of Fallujah (Operation Phantom Fury) Part of the Iraq War U.S. Marines from Mike Battery, 4th Battalion, 14th Marines, operate the 155mm M198 howitzer at Camp Fallujah, November 2004 Date 7 November 23 December 2004[1] Location Fallujah, Iraq Result Coalition victory Belligerents United States of America Iraq United Kingdom Iraqi insurgency al-Qaeda in Iraq Commanders and leaders Richard F. Natonski James Mattis James Cowan Abdullah al-Janabi Omar Hussein Hadid Strength 10,500 troops[2] 2,000 troops[2] 850 troops[3]

    Total: 13,350 troops

    Iraqi: 8 killed, 43 wounded[7] British: 4 killed, 10 wounded[8][9][10] Total: 107 killed, 613 wounded

The Second Battle of Fallujah code-named Operation Al-Fajr (Arabic, "the dawn") and Operation Phantom Fury was a joint American, Iraqi, and British offensive in November and December 2004, considered the highest point of conflict in Fallujah during the Iraq War. It was led by the U.S. Marine Corps against the Iraqi insurgency stronghold in the city of Fallujah and was authorized by the U.S.-appointed Iraqi Interim Government. The U.S. military called it "some of the heaviest urban combat U.S. Marines have been involved in since the Battle of Hu City in Vietnam in 1968."[14][15]

This operation was the second major operation in Fallujah. Earlier, in April 2004, coalition forces fought the First Battle of Fallujah in order to capture or kill insurgent elements considered responsible for the deaths of a Blackwater Security team. When coalition forces (mostly U.S. Marines) fought into the center of the city, the Iraqi government requested that the city's control be transferred to an Iraqi-run local security force, which then began stockpiling weapons and building complex defenses across the city through mid-2004.[16] The second battle was the bloodiest battle of the entire Iraq War, and is notable for being the first major engagement of the Iraq War fought solely against insurgents rather than the forces of the former Ba'athist Iraqi government, which was deposed in 2003.

In February 2004, control of Fallujah and the surrounding area in the Al-Anbar province was transferred from the U.S. 82nd Airborne Division to the 1st Marine Division. Shortly afterward, on 31 March 2004, four American private military contractors from Blackwater USA were ambushed and killed in the city. Images of their mutilated bodies were broadcast around the world.[17]

Within days, U.S. Marine Corps forces launched Operation Vigilant Resolve (4 April 2004) to take back control of the city from insurgent forces. On 28 April 2004, Operation Vigilant Resolve ended with an agreement where the local population was ordered to keep the insurgents out of the city.[16] The Fallujah Brigade, composed of local Iraqis under the command of Muhammed Latif, a former Ba'athist general, was allowed to pass through coalition lines and take over the city.

Insurgent strength and control began to grow to such an extent that by 24 September 2004, a senior U.S. official told ABC News that catching Abu Musab Al-Zarqawi, said to be in Fallujah, was now "the highest priority," and estimated his troops at 5,000 men, mostly non-Iraqis.[18]

Before beginning their attack, U.S. and Iraqi forces had established checkpoints around the city to prevent anyone from entering the city, and to intercept insurgents attempting to flee.

In addition, overhead imagery was used to prepare maps of the city for use by the attackers. American units were augmented by Iraqi interpreters to assist them in the planned fight. After weeks of withstanding air strikes and artillery bombardment, the militants holed up in the city appeared to be vulnerable to direct attack.
