Diarist Francis Kilverts vivid image of a Victorian Easter

IT was said that Victorian clergyman Francis Kilverts diaries reflected his strong love of life and landscape. Here, Nigel relates how he presented for posterity the celebration of an Easter long ago.

THE entries in his journal in early April suggested the diarist lived in an area that was close to being a hell-hole.

We were told that a thug was sentenced to six weeks hard labour for assaulting a licensee by kicking him violently and viciously in his bad place.

And on April 12, 1870, the writer expresses relief at how the Swan public house was marvellously quiet and peaceful no noise, rowing or fighting whatever and no men, as there sometimes are, lying by the roadside all night drunk, cursing, muttering, maundering and vomiting.

But within a few days a completely different picture is painted by clergyman Francis Kilvert of the Herefordshire/Wales border that he served. With his description of the goings on at Easter he demonstrated that, at times, the area could be serene and joyous.

Kilverts Diary has become established as a minor classic. As the editor of the work, William Plomer, wrote: Kilvert has the uncommon gift of making one see vividly what he describes. His detailed picture of life in the English countryside in mid-Victorian times is unmatched.

As a faithful country clergyman he moved with equal ease among people of all classes, and by all was welcomed.

Life there could be brutal and tough with the prevalence of premature death, poverty, squalor and the harshest of weather.

At the Tribeca Film Festival last night, Joss Whedon and Kai Cole's Bellwether Pictures made an unexpected move with its latest feature, In Your Eyes, giving instant access directly to fans around the world with a digital release immediately following its world premiere at the festival. Whedon announced the plan in a surprise post-screening video message (watch below).

In Your Eyes is available now as a $5.00 digital rental on the films website, InYourEyesmovie.com. The release is being powered by the Vimeo On Demand platform and has been translated into Spanish, German, Portuguese, French, and Japanese for the worldwide release.

Bellwether Pictures, founded by Joss Whedon and Kai Cole, is a micro-studio committed to creating quality independent films and utilizing modern tools of distribution to bring these titles directly to their audience. The companys first film was Whedon's con temporized Much Ado About Nothing. Their newest project, In Your Eyes, written and executive produced by Whedon and directed by Brin Hill (Ball Don't Lie), adheres to this mission by skipping the traditional modes of distribution and taking the film directly to fans via a digital distribution strategy.

Cole explained: "It was always the plan to release 'In Your Eyes' in a new and exciting way. It's no secret that the distribution landscape is shifting rapidly and there are tools at our disposal as filmmakers that we could only dream about ten years ago."

In partnership with Bellwether Pictures is producer Michael Roiff's Night & Day Pictures (Waitress, Save the Date), which shepherded the film through production and has been instrumental in forming and executing the release strategy.

Roiff echoed Cole's sentiments: "We've been aiming to do something like this from the get-go. When you work with Joss and Kai you don't get to say 'but this is how it is usually done,' you have to say 'and now for something completely different.'" He went on to say, "Finding a partner like Vimeo to power this release was incredible. They are fantastic people working to make the future of distribution happen today."

SALAMANCA, N.Y. Land clearing began last week in the Quaker area of Allegany State Park for the first of 28 upscale cabins to be constructed under a public/private partnership.

The Empire State Development Corp. has awarded a $420,000 grant toward the $2.1 million cabin project being constructed and operated by ASP Partners LLC., a Bronxville company located in Westchester County, just north of New York City.

Pre-construction activities, including grading, is under way on Parallel Trail in the Quaker area, said Gary Quattrone, Allegany State Park manager. Fourteen full-service cabins, similar to the newer Fancher-style cottages will be constructed on Parallel Trail, where older cabins were demolished last fall.

Construction on another 14 cabins in a meadow along Bova Road in the Red House area will begin sometime in the fall, after completion of the 14 cabins on Parallel Trail. Park forces are not involved in the construction.

The high end cabins will include bathrooms with shower facilities, kitchen, dining room and bedrooms. Reservations will be handled through the state park rental offices; or online at http://www.newyorkparks.reserveamerica.com. Parks maintenance employees will not be responsible for the newer cabins. They can be booked up to nine months in advance, and cost $695 a week, or $173.75 for a night.

They hope to have the Parallel Trail cabins up and running sometime this summer, then go on to Bova, Quattrone said. They are all year-round cabins. The cottage program has been very popular here. The turn-away rate is high. These new cabins will provide more opportunities for our campers who want a different camping experience.

Two years ago, state parks officials sought to combine an attraction that included a zip line, as well as new cabins in a similar public-private partnership. The project did not work out.

The Empire State Development Board approved its $420,000 share at a meeting last Thursday.

The $2.1 million project includes design work and extending utilities to the new cabins, which were described in the Allegany State Park Master Plan adopted a few years ago.

Park officials believe the new cabins will not go vacant. Instead, they should boost overnight visits in Cattaraugus County by increasing the average length of stay, as well as draw more weddings and destination events.

SINGAPORE - More bees had been buzzing around Mr Gabriel Wong's home recently, but he was unfazed until his wife stepped on one in their home on Tuesday.

The incident prompted the F&B manager to investigate and he found a large beehive within the walls of his home, Lianhe Wanbao reported yesterday.

Armed with a camera with a powerful zoom lens, Mr Wong, 46, traced the bees to the air-conditioner vents outside his block of flats in Redhill.

To his surprise, the bees were flying into his air-con unit on the eighth floor - and not coming out.

He called pest control, which used pesticide and chemicals to kill the bees.

What they did not expect was the size of the swarm.

The next day, when they prised open the air-con compressor, they found a mound of dead bees and seven large honeycombs behind a wooden panel that was very near to Mr Wong's daughter's bed.

He told Wanbao that he had tried to save the bees, asking two pest control companies whether it was possible to move the hive. Both companies advised him to exterminate the bees.

Mr Wong also wrote to Stomp about the incident: "After the February drought, the rain came in March.

"All of a sudden, there is a sudden abundance of flowers blooming everywhere in our neighbourhood and the bees found themselves surrounded with a great surplus of food supply.
