AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) --"I was looking for someone to do some tile work for me because I had linoleum on my floors," Gloria Samuels said.
It is a decision Samuels is now regretting after hiring a man she has learned has an extensive criminal record.
Jeffery Lee Vaughner, 43, has served prison time for forgery and has an extensive criminal history including convictions for theft by deception and breach of trust.
That is not all a News 12 investigation uncovered.
Authorities say Vaughner's business dealings have landed him in and out of prison for the past 12 years.
Had Samuels checked his name on Google, she said it could have saved her a real the headache.
"I was looking for someone to do some tile work for me because I had linoleum on my floors and I wanted to upgrade my floors to make them look better," Samuels said.
A decision she is now regretting after hiring Jeffery's Quality Service to install tile in her bathrooms and kitchen. Samuels said on March 6 she paid $800 down and the remaining balance of $500 before the work was even finished.
"I wouldn't have done that but I thought we were building a rapport because he was saying he was a preacher," Samuels said.

ROCKFORD - Stateline students and staff come together to create a 2,200 mosaic mural.
Students and teachers pack Thurgood Marshall School too show off their hard work- from the past year. "We worked for a year and a half to create our Ocenia Mural and now we get to celebrate it with the community" says Thurgood principal Jill Faber.
"At the end of the day, this mural represents a group of people, a community, who could all dream the same dream" said ArtistDrew Helge.
But these kids aren't just putting clay together, they're learning new qualities that will help them better themselves.
"These are life skills, that aren't necessary about clay. They learned new team work, they learned how to talk to each other" says Helge.
Their lesson now forever on display for all to see- in the foyer at Thurgood Marshall School.

New York: Even as Microsoft prepares for a future dominated by touch-screen devices, it is steering its Windows system to embrace more of the past.
The divide between old and new is less pronounced in the latest, free update. That's a welcome change, as that's one of the things that annoy me most about Windows 8.
As sales of smartphones and tablets grow rapidly, Microsoft reshaped Windows so that PCs came to look, work and feel more like mobile devices.
Windows 8 has a full-page, tablet-like start screen filled with large icons, or tiles. Traditional mouse and keyboard controls still work, but it's more efficient if you use touch-screen controls. Windows 8 has a desktop mode that resembles older versions of Windows, but it steers users toward the touch-centric tile mode.
Many people hated Windows 8 when it came out in October 2012.
Microsoft responded a year later with Windows 8.1. With the free update, people can change settings to boot computers directly into the desktop. Windows 8.1 restores a Start button on the lower left corner of the desktop, though without all the functionality found in older versions. Windows 8.1 also lets people add their favourite desktop apps to a horizontal taskbar at the bottom of the screen.
In short, Windows 8.1 doesn't try to force people into the tile screen as often.
Still, Windows 8.1 feels like two separate systems. Your favorite desktop apps are on the desktop's horizontal taskbar, while your favorite tile-mode apps are on the tile-based start screen. How you perform tasks such as closing an app depends on which mode you're in.
Last week's update, simply called Windows 8.1 Update, brings more consistency:
- The tile screen now has prominent buttons for key controls - namely search and shutting down. No longer do you have to figure out how to pull those options out like a sock drawer from the right side of the screen. Microsoft could have gone further by also including a button for settings, but I'm getting greedy.

Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMKs) Rajya Sabha member TM Selvaganapathy has submitted his resignation after being convicted in a cheating case related to construction of cremation sheds when he was minister for rural development and local administration in the AIADMK government during 1995-96.
Selvaganapathy told reporters his resignation was submitted to the chairman of Rajya Sabha and added he would approach the higher court and prove his innocence. According to the regulation, since he was proven guilty by the Judge, Selvaganapathy would lose his post once the order is conveyed to the Parliamentary Secretariat, even if he did not resign.
He joined the DMK in August 2008 and took charge as a member of RS in June 2010. According to reports, he is the first politician from Tamil Nadu to be disqualified from Parliament in such a case.
The Special Judge for CBI cases, Chennai, convicted Selvaganapathy and four others to undergo two years rigorous imprisonment with a fine of Rs 25,000 each for allegedly cheating the state and the central governments related to construction of cremation sheds under the Jawahar Rozgar Yojana.
The others include J T Acharulu, then secretary, and M Sathyamurthy, then director of rural department, along with Krishnamurthy, then project officer and T Bharathi, a private person.
CBI had registered a case on May 2, 1997 on the directions of High Court of Madras against T M Selvaganapathy, the then Minister for Rural Development and Local Administration in Tamil Nadua long with others, on the allegations that the accused persons entered into a criminal conspiracy between 1995 and 1996 at Chennai and other places in Tamil Nadu and cheated the Government of India and Government of Tamil Nadu in the matter of construction of cremation sheds under Jawahar Rozgar Yojana (JRY), which was not an identified item of work under JRY Scheme and also used the JRY funds.
It was also alleged that such work should not have been entrusted to co-operative societies and advanced payment to the societies was prohibited by the Tamil Nadu Government. But the work was given for construction of cremation sheds to Karungulam Co-operative Society in Nagapattinam District. The payments were made to the Society through demand drafts and the Special Officer of the Society facilitated Bharathi, a private person, who executed the work of erection of cremetion sheds though he was not the member of the society. He executed the said work in a substandard manner through the sub-contractors and not in conformity with the specifications, to encash the demand drafts. A loss was caused to the tune of around Rs 23 lakh to the Government, added a CBI announcement.
After thorough investigation, a charge sheet was filed against them. The Special Officer of Society expired and charges against him were abated while on completion of trial, all the other accused persons were found guilty, said the announcement.

DMK's Rajya Sabha member resigns following court sentence
CHENNAI: DMK's Rajya Sabha member TM Selvaganapathy is all set to lose his post, with a CBI court here convicting him in the infamous creation shed scam case and sentenced him to undergo imprisonment for two years. Four others, including two IAS officers, too received similar sentence.
Selvaganapathy was local administration minister in the Jayalalithaa cabinet in 1995 when the cremation shed scam came to light, following a report from IAS officer Umashankar. He later joined the DMK, and is at present member of the Rajya Sabha. Now that he has been convicted, he stands to lose the post immediately after the order is conveyed to the speaker.
The case pertains to corruption and misappropriation of funds allocated under the Jawahar Rojgar Yojana and the plan to build 100 cremation sheds in Nagapattinam district in 1995. Besides Selvaganapathy, another AIADMK minister, SD Somasundaram, and some officers were cited as accused in the case.
IX additional sessions judge S Malathi who is also the special judge for CBI cases, convicted Selvaganapathy and ordered him to remain in jail for two years along with a fine of Rs 25,000. Apart from Selvaganapathy, two IAS officers JT Acharyulu, the then special commissioner rural development and M Sathiamoorthy, director of rural development were cited as accused. Of the three other officers cited as accused, one died during trial.
The special judge said, "Prosecution adduced reliable and satisfactory evidence beyond reasonable doubt," and imposed a fine of Rs 25,000 each. The CBI had invoked provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.
According to CBI, in 1995-96 under the Jawahar Rojgar Yojana scheme, a high level meeting was held by Selvaganapathy in which it was decided to construct 100 cremation sheds for Adi Dravidars in Nagapattinam. While the Centre would contribute 80%, the state would contribute 20% as its share.
The contract was awarded to Karungulam Carpentary and Blacksmith Worker Industrial Society in Nagapattinam and Rs 30 lakh was distributed. Later, inspection revealed that the sheds were of substandard quality and had no utility value.
The CBI alleged that the five accused had caused Rs 24 lakh loss to the government.

FORSYTH Taney County Commissioners this week discussed the possibility of creating an environmental services department to help residents gets septic tanks cleaned.
Its my wish that the Taney County citizens whove paid this tax, who havent gotten anything for the tax, Id like to see environmental services put something together to benefit everyone, said Commissioner Danny Strahan.
I think its something that would benefit all instead of just the few that would be hooked up to sewer projects, Strahan said.
The tax Strahan referred to is the countys half-cent sewer tax that allows the county to build and maintain sewer systems intended to help clean the countys lakes and drinking water.
Currently, the county provides $75 discounts to pump septic tanks. An expansion of that service is one of the items the department would promote.
Last week, David Casaletto, executive director of Ozarks Water Watch, asked commissioners to consider an ordinance requiring septic tank inspection for homes being sold. Casaletto also commended the commissioners for how much Taney County has already done to clean the countys waterways and wells. The commission did not discuss his request during this meeting.
Strahan said if the department is formed, he would expect they would provide many more services to county residents.
However, the commissioners asked for guidance from Mike Cole and Scott Starrett, from the county planning department, to come up with some details.
Well be looking at an environmental services department, said Presiding Commissioner Ron Houseman. And if its created, what will make it up? What will be added to the website? Theyd communicate with the media.
Strahan said commissioners have talked about forming such a department for a long time and hed like to finally get it moving forward.
