First Opera at the Venetian Pool in 1926 with a Cost of $1 Million

    - April 19, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

April is National Landscape Architecture Monthjust in time for the Historic Preservation Association of Coral Gables spring event at the Venetian Pool.

HPACG, a 501c3 nonprofit whose mission is to promote the understanding and importance of historic resources and their preservation, is hosting a spring fundraiser on Saturday April 26th at the historically-designated landmark Venetian Pool included in the National Register of Historic Places. The Venetian Pool was opened in 1924 as the Venetian Casino, which was part of the Grand Plan George Merrick had for the City of Coral Gables. Completed in 1925 it was designed by Phineas Paist with Denman Fink.

In 1989, the pools first historical renovation was completed. Between 2009 and 2010 the pool underwent a second renovation. The pools original rich history can still be observed as you walk through the entry fountain room and gaze upon its historic photographs, reminding patrons of an era long gone by.

    Oh, about the Opera.

The first national opera troupe performance in Miami was in the drained Venetian Pool on February 2, 1926. The million-dollar production had a cast of 30 singers and 28 ballet dancers who arrived on three special trains. The opera was sponsored by the developers of CG and Miami Shores. A year earlier, in 1925, the celebrated Paul Whiteman Orchestra played in the Venetian Pool to help George Merrick promote sales in CG.

History repeats itself. Help preserve it.

Help support the Venetian Pool and its historical significance in Coral Gables and beyond. Sponsors to date include (Founders Level) Keyes Real Estate and the Elizabeth L. Perez Team; Myrna Mayor/Zamora Group; City of Coral Gables. (Artist Level) Chef Luis/Paella Grill; Calypso. (Architect Level) Realtor Cary Avila/ EWM; Joan Thompson/ Summer House Interiors; Coral Gables Museum.

Pool Electrocution Highlights Wiring Safety Issues

MIAMI (CBSMiami) The electrocution of a 7-year old boy in the familys North Miami swimming pool apparently due to faulty wiring to the pools light has served as a lightning rod drawing attention to pool safety.

Master electrician Walter Sanders was at a Coral Gables home Friday where he immediately noticed a potentially, very dangerous issue with the pools underwater light.

As you can see, theres water in the light, Sanders said, pointing. You can see the water line inside of that light fixture.

There can be no overstating the obvious, Sanders said.

Water and electricity dont mix, without possibly deadly consequences.

Swimming pools are to South Florida as canals are to Venice. Theyre everywhere. And most pools built before 1984 have a full 120 volts of electricity going to their lights.

I would suggest those people would want to look into hiring an electrician to change that system over to a twelve volt system, Sanders said.

A 12-volt power system for pool lighting uses a transformer to step down a potentially deadly 120 volts to just twelve.

Owner fined for clearing own trees

    - April 19, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Updated: Thursday, April 17 2014, 07:33 PM EDT

Irondequoit, N.Y.-- Chopping down trees and clearing the debris is not new for Al Gilbert.

"We always just cut them down," said the 88-year-old businessman.

In early December he began having roughly 200 trees, mostly Cottonwood, cleared from a one acre piece of land that rests yards from Voyager Marina and underneath the O'Rourke Bridge in Irondequoit.

"Mr. Gilbert has said he did not know that it was an E.P.O.D.," said Ray McDonald, a member of the Planning Board. "An environmentally protected overlay district--which is on his taxes."

Gilbert contends he did not know prior to being told by town leaders.

"I thought it was an i-pod first, I said, no that has something to do with telephone's first, not trees," said Gilbert.

Town Development Director Nicholas Weatherbee said another mistake Gilbert made was not getting town approval before cutting down the trees. With a simple permit, Weatherbee said, the trees could have been cut without violating town code.

Gilbert said had he known, he would not have cut trees from his own property.

The reason for doing so, however, is twofold.

5 simple tips to prepare your home for flood season

    - April 19, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

(BPT) - After a winter of frigid temperatures and record snowfalls, the nation now faces the spring thaw and long, rainy months. Flood season is officially here is your home ready for it?

Floods are the most common natural disaster in the United States. Over the past five years, the average flood insurance claim was more than $35,000, according to FEMA.gov. If you or someone you know has ever experienced a flood, you know that cleanup can require a massive effort.

The best defense against flooding is a proactive approach. Consider these flood tips to prepare your home and family for flood season:

    1. Get a shop vac

Every home that is susceptible to water and moisture should have a reliable shop vac. This type of vacuum sucks up water quickly and efficiently. Keep in mind, flood cleanup must be done quickly within the first 48 hours to avoid mold growth and extensive property damage.

    2. Test your sump pump

Take the time now to test your sump pump. Simply lift the float on the side of the pump and listen for the pump to turn on; that noise indicates your pump is working correctly. Next, install a water alarm that will let you know if water is accumulating in your basement. An alarm like AdvanTEXT from WAYNE Pumps sends text messages to up to three people in the event of power outages or high water levels. If you are away from home or even out of town, you can take immediate action to protect your property, rather than unknowingly coming home to a flooded basement. Visit http://www.waynepumps.com/preventflooding for more information.

    3. Seal cracks

Seal the cracks in the basement floor and foundation to prevent water seepage when the water table gets too high. Similarly, if you have concrete walls, be sure to seal those cracks as well. This is a simple DIY task that can be done using a variety of affordable sealant materials available at home improvement stores.

    4. Prepare and protect

Sonos plans software update to make speaker system completely wireless

    - April 19, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Sonos is testing a software update for its wireless speaker system that removes the need for a physical connection to the home network. The software would allow for the system's SonosNet network to operate with one of the speakers accessing the local Wi-Fi network, and avoiding wiring either a speaker or the Sonos Bridge wireless networking device to a router.

At the moment, the speakers create the SonosNet wireless mesh network between each other independently from a home Wi-Fi network. In order to provide an Internet connection, one of the Sonos speakers has to be connected over Ethernet, or the Sonos Bridge can be used to join the two networks together. The new system would allow for a speaker to be wirelessly connected to the home network, configured by a smartphone, with the speaker then organizing the separate SonosNet network.

While the software update would effectively remove the need for the Sonos Bridge, it could still find itself useful in some instances in the future. Sonos notes that some large homes or "challenging network environments" where the speakers will not be in range of the Wi-Fi signal, so a Bridge or a wired speaker may be required. Sonos does claim that, in its early testing, the majority of homes will "work well" with the new software.

"Wireless technology has improved over the last 10 years and alongside other investments in evolving your experience with the changing times, we are preparing to take SonosNet to the next level," reads a company blog post.

Sonos did not reveal when it will be releasing the software update, but it is accepting applications for its beta program.
