SOMONAUK The village of Somonauk is compiling a list of homeowners in the village who are interested in paving or resurfacing their driveways.
The brutally cold winter destroyed a lot of driveways this year. The village is compiling its list in an effort to help residents find a company to make the repairs and to get the work done at a reasonable cost. If enough people express interest, the village can negotiate a lower group rate with a single company, resulting in a lower cost for each homeowner.
Residents who would like to get on the list should call village hall at 815-498-3500 by May 3. Residents on the list will be contacted by a paving company, which will visit each home and give homeowners a bid for the work at the negotiated reduced rate. The cost reduction will be based upon the number of driveways, so the more people who sign up, the lower each persons cost will be. The bid is free, and there is no obligation to hire the contractor or to have the work done once the bid is complete.
For information, call village hall and leave a message for Scott Merrill or, to get on the list, leave your name, address and phone number with the clerk.

BERKELEY LAKE A Clark Patterson Lee road paving projects study outlining necessary road improvements in Berkeley Lake was completed last month. On Thursday, during the April City Council meeting, City Administrator Tom Rozier proposed a public works project that will complete the necessary paving projects in phases.
City Engineer Rich Edinger, at a cost not to exceed $6,900, will prepare the contracts and documents required for the paving projects, ensure smooth driveway transitions, manage the bidding process and serve as project manager for the entire scope of work.
Roads in Berkeley Walk, Berkeley Commons, River Mansions and a section of Habersham Lane will be improved in the scope of this project.
Lakeshore Drive drainage project to commence
Edinger will also prepare a drainage study for the properties located between 243 and 265 Lakeshore Drive, then provide Mayor Lois Salter and City Council members with possible solutions to the drainage problems along that stretch of road.
A citizen had asked the city to clear debris from the drainage pipe system along these properties, but according to Rozier, that would be a short-term solution only. The city has decided to explore permanent solutions with Edingers advice.
For a cost not to exceed $4,500, the city engineer will perform the drainage study and report back to city leaders.
Berkeley Lake officially a Compassionate City
Council members adopted a resolution Thursday, officially declaring Berkeley Lake a Compassionate City.
Our city has been un unusually compassionate for years. It will be nice to be recognized for that, said Salter.

Demolition work has finally begun on Cooper Stadium, starting the transformation of Columbus venerable home of minor league baseball into a race track.
Crews today are tearing down a building behind the grandstand along the first base line.
A pile of concrete blocks and other rubble sit behind the stadium, exposing what had been a mens restroom. Piles of metal lay across the reserved seats behind home plate.
Plans call for the grandstand along the first-base line to be torn down as Arshot Investment Corp. converts the stadium into a race track, part of the $40 million Sports Pavilion and Automotive Research Complex, or SPARC.
About 8,500 seats will remain.
Demolition will continue through spring, then construction will begin on the track and the adjacent automotive research and technology building. The project is scheduled to open by fall 2015, said Arshot spokeswoman Lisa Griffin.
The site was Columbus home of minor league baseball beginning on June 3, 1932, when Red Bird Stadium was dedicated. The Columbus Red Birds were the St. Louis Cardinals top farm team, playing in the American Association. It was one of the first stadiums with permanent lights.
The Red Birds were moved to Omaha, Neb., after the 1954 season. Harold Cooper, a minor league baseball executive who once served as a clubhouse boy at Red Bird Stadium, worked with local businessmen to bring the Ottawa team in the International League here for the 1955 season.
The Columbus team was named the Jets and the stadium renamed Jet Stadium.
