CHICAGO, Littelfuse, Inc., the global leader in circuit protection, has introduced two product lines designed specifically to provide transient overvoltage protection for outdoor and commercial LED lighting fixtures. Constructed with Littelfuse thermally protected Varistors, the LSP05 and LSP10 Surge Protection Device (SPD) Modules provide robust surge current handling capability. A built-in thermal disconnect function provides additional protection from catastrophic failures and fire hazards, even under the extreme circumstances of Varistor end of life or sustained overvoltage conditions. Applications include outdoor and commercial LED lighting, including roadway lighting, traffic lighting, digital signage, service entrance lighting, parking garage/lot lighting, flood lighting, tunnel lighting, and street lighting.
The LSP05 Module is configured with parallel connections. The LSP10 Module is available with either parallel or series connections; the series-connected version of the LSP10 is the worlds first indicating surge arrestor capable of handling surges of up to 20,000 amps used for outdoor LED applications. With the parallel-connected versions, an indicator wire can activate an LED to tell maintenance personnel when to replace the SPD in order to ensure the luminaire remains protected. The LSP10 series-connected version cuts luminaire power off to provide a clearly visible indication the SPD should be replaced.
Municipalities and property owners make a significant investment when they replace legacy lighting with LED lighting, so they have high expectations for reliability, said Johnny Chang, product manager for the LSP05 and LSP10 product lines. The LSP05 and LSP10 are designed to protect these lighting fixture investments from damage due to surge events and reduce maintenance costs by providing a real-time indication when the SPD module needs to be replaced.
The LSP05 and LSP10 Surge Protection Modules offer these key benefits: These optimized surge immunity solutions protect outdoor LED fixture investments with maximum lightning surge current ratings of 20,000A (LSP10) and 10,000A (LSP05). Internal varistors are thermally protected to prevent failure due to end-of-life or continuous overvoltage faults. Clear indication of SPD replacement prevents future surge damage to luminaire. IP66 water-proof and dust-proof design allows for flexibility in outdoor installation locations, inside or outside of luminaire, top or bottom at lighting pole, in transformer box or on distribution panel. Indication wire options make it easy to implement an indicating/monitoring circuit for SPD replacement. These devices are recognized to meet UL1449 Type 4 Component Assembly requirements and are compliant with IEC 61643-11 Class II and EN 61643-11 Type 2, so they are suitable for use in LED lighting fixtures around the world. Their compact form factor (48x48x30mm) makes them easy to mount inside a luminaire; mounting tabs simplify installation and replacement.
Availability The LSP05 and LSP10 Surge Protection Modules are available in bulk pack. Sample requests can be placed through authorized Littelfuse distributors worldwide. For a listing of Littelfuse distributors, please visit Littelfuse.com.

YAKIMA, Wash. Grass, maple trees and a water fountain will be installed at the west end of the Yakima County courthouse this summer the final touches on the structures recent exterior upgrade.
Those finishing upgrades will cost about $50,000, and a request for bids for the work was advertised Wednesday.
A roughly 3-foot concrete pool and waterfall will accompany the grass and maple trees that will replace the old planter box at the west end of the building along First Street. A small strip of sidewalk near the corner of First Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard also will be completed, said county Engineer Gary Ekstedt.
It will be kind of a little park, he said. There will be some grass and a couple of maple trees in there.
Work is expected to begin in June and take about a month.
So far, the county has spent roughly $4.3 million on upgrading the exterior of the courthouse, which included a new facade over the entire building improving weather resistance and newly paved sidewalks and parking lots, said Director of Public Services Vern Redifer.
Were styling and profiling, he said.

A group of Church Hill residents and state preservationists are questioning the city planning staffs reversal on controversial elements of a proposed luxury condominium high-rise that would block panoramic views from Libby Hill.
The building would rise from a steep slope of ground between Cary and Main streets just east of Tobacco Row in Shockoe Bottom. At Cary Street, it would stand 16 stories tall, including three levels of underground parking. Thirteen stories would be visible from Main Street and Libby Hill behind it.
Developers David White and Louis Salomonsky call the project The James at River Bend, and it would house 65 units, including four penthouses with commanding river views. The penthouses are set back from a facade dotted with roof terraces -- a design thats meant to mimic the landscape, the developers say. The land, which is occupied by a stand of trees and the small outpost of an old gas station, isnt zoned for residential use, so the developers are asking the city for a special-use permit. Their request is scheduled to go before the Planning Commission on April 21. City planning staff told White in August that it couldnt recommend approval of the development for numerous reasons. That particular patch of land was inadvertently excluded from the 2008 Downtown Plan, staff wrote in a letter to White, but should be subject to its guiding principles including the preservation of river views and urban character. Among the concerns:
The height of the building would cause it to stand out in the landscape and considerably alter views from surrounding areas. Though the building would not obscure the most notable view of the bend of the James River, it would change river views from Libby Hill Park.
And the proposed building neither respects nor reinforces the scale and character of the adjacent buildings. The proposed height is considerably taller than buildings within the vicinity.
But by January, planners had softened their stance. In a brief to the city administrator, staff again notes that the building will stand out and alter views. However, they added, that is the nature of an evolving urban area. The site can support additional height but done in a way that respects its context.
The building doesnt enhance and reinforce [this] historic urban character, staff reaffirms, but adds, The biggest question becomes can a building that is clearly different in form than the urban character in which it sits, reinforce that character? The direct answer is yes.
Precisely how the project will do so remains a work in progress, staff wrote.
The developers and city planners have been ironing out their differing visions, but project opponent Eugenia Anderson-Ellis of the River View Advocates says the buildings height and mass hasnt changed.
The height is the issue, she says. The height has always been the issue. The building would stand 190 feet at Cary and 160 feet at Main, according to Whites proposal, which notes that most of the neighboring Tobacco Rows apartment buildings are 80 to 115 feet high. Anderson-Ellis says she and other opponents met with city planning director Mark Olinger several times. We really dont know why they did an about face, she says. We never got a decent answer. Olinger declined to comment, saying it was premature to discuss the project before the Planning Commission hearing.

Clearing the decks for the expansion of Jamia Millia Islamia, the Supreme Court on Wednesday allowed the Delhi government to acquire about 107 bighas (approximately 26 hectares) of prime land in Okhla village in south Delhi.
The case pertains to 214 bighas of land in Okhla village that Delhi government wanted to acquire for the expansion of the 92-year-old university, one of India's oldest.
The city government had initiated the process a few months ago, but the Uttar Pradesh government objected to this, contending the land belonged to the state.
The court had in January stopped the acquisition process and ordered the maintenance of status quo.
"We contended before the court that the land belonged to the union government and that Jamia, being a central university, needs the land for its expansion," said Atyab Siddiqui, the varsity's standing counsel.
"The court modified its earlier order and allowed the acquisition of about 107 bighas of land. The rest of the 107 bighas would remain under judicial restrainment," Siddiqui added.
The Uttar Pradesh government had contended that it owned the entire area of a little over 214 bighas.
"The order has given a boost to Jamia's expansion plans. Currently, we are hard pressed for the space and there is hardly any space left for expansion," Jamia Millia Islamia media coordinator Mukesh Ranjan told IANS.
