A Christchurch company faces up to $1.2million in fines after pleading guilty to multiple charges related to dumping waste.
Pollard Contracting and Oakleigh Innovation, and their respective directors, were all charged with illegally disposing of demolition waste at a property in Leeston, south of Christchurch.
Company director Charles Nimmo today pleaded guilty in the Christchurch District Court on behalf ofOakleigh Innovation to three charges relating to breaching a district plan rule, discharging contaminants into the air and discharging from an industry trade on the land.
He entered no plea on a fourth charge related to disposal of demolition waste on a farm property. The company will appear for sentencing on May 28.
Companies dumping waste illegally can be fined up to $600,000 on each charge. Individuals can face up to two years in prison or fines of up to $300,000.
The same four charges were also laid against Nimmo personally, but in court he entered no pleas.
Judge Brian Dwyer adjourned the case against Nimmo until May 28 for him to either plead or have the charges against him withdrawn.
Meanwhile, Craig Pollard and Helen Thomas, of Pollard Contracting, have not pleaded. They will appear in the Christchurch District Court on May 28.

THE demolition of illegal structures at the old BIBAK dormitory along Harrison Road in Baguio City will be conducted anytime this summer.
During Mondays executive-legislative meeting, Mayor Mauricio Domogan tasked the City Anti-Squatting Committee to set the date for the demolition of structures which have mushroomed in the area through the years.
Domogan earlier said the City Government deferred the demolition to give student boarders enough time to transfer during the summer break.
The mayor then said the City Government is now in the process of listing down the names of structure owners for them to be notified of their violations.
Domogan, however, has been encouraging owners of these structures to voluntarily vacate the area, stressing that the local government does not want to use force in evicting informal settlers.
He said the City Building and Architecture Office together with the Public Order and Safety Division are tasked to investigate and identify owners to whom notices of demolition will be forwarded.
The RDC unanimously approved a resolution last September 12supporting the City Government to demolish some 52 illegal structures to pave way for a dormitory for students from Cordillera provinces.
The RDC resolution said developing the lot as a dormitory will help make Baguio an educational center and generate income from the government property.
As early as 1983, a demolition order was issued by the City Engineers Office for the demolition of at least two buildings built in the 1960s by the centralized Baguio, Ifugao, Bontoc, Apayao and Kalinga (BIBAK) to give way for the construction of a new dormitory. In 2006, a similar demolition order was made by former Mayor Braulio Yaranon but also did not materialize.
The lot in question is part of the Original Certificate of Title 1 where the Cordillera Regional Assembly building stands together with several structures which are rented out by land speculators to eateries, internet shops and other illegal structures catering to students from a nearby university and offices.

Demolition work began Monday to make way for another apartment complex on the edge of uptown Charlotte.
Terwilliger Pappas Multifamily Partners is developing the project, which occupies about two acres at the corner of Kenilworth Avenue and East Morehead Street.
Called Solis Dilworth, the five-story complex will feature 184 apartments, a fitness room, pool and other amenities, the company said. Adolfson & Peterson Construction is building the complex, which is slated to open next spring.
The project is part of a multifamily building boom on Morehead Street, which borders uptown. Forestar Group is building a mixed-use project across the street from Solis Dilworth, Crescent Communities has a complex going in across from Carolinas Medical Center and NRP Group has started a project near Bank of America Stadium.
Former Trammell Crow Residential CEO Ronald Terwilliger and Metropolitan developer Peter Pappas started their company in May 2013 to develop multifamily projects throughout the Southeast.
Terwilliger Pappas bought the land for Solis Dilworth in March from Edward Springs and affiliated companies for $5.5 million, according to county records.

Minneapolis, Twin Cities Minnesota (PRWEB) April 13, 2014
The Twin Cities Builders Remodelers Showcase (BRS), held on April 3 is the largest building industry product show in the Upper Midwest and brings together home building and remodeling industry professionals. The event was a great success and showcased the latest trends and product releases for Twin Cities home remodeling ideas. Professionals got a read on the pulse of the home remodeling industry in the coming year and homeowners are armed with new remodeling ideas.
"Minneapolis homeowners who begin a major home renovation by considering and evaluating current housing market circumstances and their family's future goals will make better informed decisions," says Jenna Thuening, owner of Home Destination. "For homeowners weighing remodeling project costs in view of their future return value, an objective look at today's current predictions from raw housing data leads to the best remodeling spends."
Metro home builders offer diversity in housing design and price, which draws crowds to gather remodeling ideas or simply admire. Twin Cities home buyers who are challenged by low housing inventory may be turning to custom-designed homes as another option they hadn't previously considered. Others seek model homes showcasing the best of a community. Others are choosing to simply remodel their existing home. The uptick in requests for home remodeling bids signals a deepening confidence in the Twin Cities housing recovery.
Hanley's Remodeling Cost vs Value Report 2014 for the West / North Central region, which includes the Twin Cities, helps Twin Cities home builders and consumers determine where the best dollar is spent on a home remodel.
Here is a summarized list compiled by Home Destination of inexpensive Twin Cities home remodeling projects:
1.Remodel With Paint - Whether its a major overhaul or a simple makeover, putting a fresh coat of paint on a home is one of the best projects to protect a home investment. Little brings a home to ruin quicker than rain and moisture that seeps through peeling paint.
2. A New Front Door - One of the top quick home remodeling projects for the most immediate impact. A front door is the welcome point of a home; updating to a more stylish one can also include updating to a more energy efficient door.
3. Garage Door Replacement - Whether the home has a one or three car garage, the door's expanse is large and making the upgrade to a newer one has a big impact on a home's curb appeal as well as functionality for daily use.
"The best home remodeling projects are those that fit the homeowner's use and enjoyment of their home. For those who choose to invest more than one can realistically anticipate recouping the costs of, if they love their home and plan to live in it for a long while, that's great," adds Thuening. For those who plan to sell their home in the future, knowing what remodel costs are easier to recover is helpful in making better decisions.

WALTER KITUNDU HAD his camera focused on a hummingbird in San Francisco's Alta Plaza Park when a red-tail hawk flew over him. Intrigued, he returned to the park a few more times to look for the bird.
"One day it flew straight at me and landed on the ground 4 feet away from me and ate a caterpillar. We just sat there together for about a minute. Someone else walked by, and it flew off. But I was totally hooked," says Kitundu, who called the bird Patch.
And that's how the 40-year-old former Bolinas resident added bird photographer to a resume that includes being the inventor of the phonoharp and other wildly imaginative instruments for groups such as San Francisco's Kronos Quartet, a visual artist, hip-hop DJ, senior designer at the Exploratorium's Learning Studio and a recipient of a MacArthur Foundation "genius" award in 2008.

"I'm not necessarily interested in seeing a lot of species but I'm really interested in seeing intimate, close looks at particular birds and really getting to know how they live their lives through my photographs," he says. "I've been privy to some pretty interesting behaviors."
His years of observing birds often perched on rocks or under trees in the wind and cold is the subject of a new photography-based e-book, "Bird Knowledge: Little Life Lessons Learned from Birds," and a site-specific installation at the Bolinas Museum, "The Ceiling of Our Day," through June 1.
"They teach you an awful lot. They teach you about patience, obviously, but certain things are more subtle," says Kitundu, who now lives in Oakland. "They taught me to pay attention to the light and the temperature and the wind in a way that makes me feel a little more connected, a little more aware about what's going on. "... I always say birds are the best bird watchers. When you're watching them, they will show you everything that's going on in their surroundings because their survival depends on it."
Like the time he followed the gaze of a great blue heron in San Francisco. "It looked up and I looked up to where it was looking and sure enough, there was a golden eagle flying over the city," he recalls.
More than 100 of his bird photographs are being featured at the Bolinas Museum, but rather than just hang on them framed on the walls, the photos are part of an installation that like just about everything he does is kinetic.
