High price to pay? Observation tower divides Brighton

    - April 13, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

That has left critics accusing Brighton council of putting public funds at risk for the sake of a visual abomination.

Valerie Payton, who is organising a campaign against its construction, said: The i360 will be profoundly out of keeping with the rest of the seafront. It will be a huge, wide and monstrously tall steel structure that will be omnipresent and visible from wherever you look in the city and beyond.

The i360, designed by David Marks and Julia Barfield, the husband and wife team behind the London Eye wheel on the capitals South Bank, has lain on the drawing board for the past eight years.

But although it received planning permission in 2006 it stalled after being unable to attract the required investment from private lenders.

After a number of potential investors pulled out following the global financial crisis of 2007-9, Marks Barfield Architects were left with 6m of their own money in the project, along with a 4m grant from Coast 2 Capital local enterprise partnership.

Then last month, Green and Conservative Party councillors in Brighton joined forces to vote through a loan application of 36.2m from the Public Works Loan Board to allow construction to begin.

Repayment of the loan would rely on the tower generating enough revenue from visitors.

But Mrs Payton, of the Save Hove, campaign, said: The idea of a viewing platform is hackneyed and old hat. Theres already one down the coast in Weymouth. People dont fall for that kind of thing anymore.

To cap it all the security on the loan from Brighton is the tower itself, so if it fails for any reason the city will have to repay the loan. It will be a huge white elephant, with interest payable on it.

A hoarding, covered in artists impressions and information about the i360 currently masks the spot from where the 15ft wide tower will rise high above the Brighton skyline.

    Home feature: Craft time

    - April 13, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    By Suanne Huffman, correspondent

Wood planking, cornices, doors, windows, rafters, rusty radiators, clawfoot bathtubs. These items arent stocked on most store shelves.

At Salvage Barn in Iowa City, though, most of the inventory is at least 50 years old. Signs of wear and years is the rule, not the exception.

Beneath the peeling paint and rust or in some cases because of it theres inspiration, and not just for do-it-yourself types and contractors rehabbing older homes.

Perhaps fueled by Pinterest, the Salvage Barn, a warehouse specializing in historic architectural building materials operated by Friends of Historic Preservation, has seen more and more crafters digging through bins and rummaging through piles at the warehouse at the East Side Recycling Center, 2401 Scott Blvd., Iowa City.

Rusty, dusty or musty, they wanted it. Who can ignore bins heaped with items for 25 to 50 cents each?

They turned old windows into picture frames for graduation gifts, dresser drawers into flower planters, an old sink into a potting table and a table from siding and rafters.

With a little elbow grease, nothing is too old or damaged to turn into something beautiful, says Executive Director Alicia Trimble.

That mantra will be on display Saturday at the Salvage Barn and Friends of Historic Preservations first reuse-themed craft fair Craft Your Environment.

The event promotes the mission of the barn sustainable use of materials by showcasing the work of 30 artists and crafters from the region who reuse, repurpose and restore items that would otherwise end up in a landfill.

Motel plans conversion to restaurant, bar, gym and spa

    - April 13, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

South Lake Tahoe may have a new restaurant, bar, gym and spa along with one less old motel by spring 2015.

Plans are currently in place to convert the 27-unit Highland Inn, located at 3979 Lake Tahoe Blvd, into a 3,851-square-foot restaurant and bar, a 3,352-square-foot spa and a 1,783-square-foot gym.

The plan has already been approved by the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency, said owner Moe Rahmani, and the design review and permit for the project was approved by city planning commissioners Thursday.

Im very excited about this project, Rahmani said Friday. I think its going to look really sharp and be good for the city. Theres going to be one less old motel in this town.

Construction, expected to begin after Labor Day and end about eight months later, will involve the replacement of existing fences, the replacement of lighting, and the installation of sidewalks, landscaping and best management practices.

The structure itself will remain the same shape, but the facade and interior of the building will be completely redone, Rahmani said. Exterior modifications will include new stone and wood siding.

Its going to be hot, he said.

At this time, no specific businesses have signed on to occupy the proposed space, but Rahmani said there were a couple interested parties. Mountain Mikes Tees and Skis, an existing business that has been operating on the southeast side of the inn for about 16 years, will stay on the property.

Rahmani said his hope is that the conversion attracts more tourists and locals to the property.

At the city planning commission meeting, a couple commissioners expressed their support for the plan. Commissioner Tamara Wallace was one of them.
