A large kitchen island with a white quartz countertop is surrounded by comfortable white leather stools.
The final season of Mad Men begins Sunday, April 13. Since its kickoff in 2007, the AMC series has helped bring 1960s design style back into vogue. Set in a midtown Manhattan high-rise, the offices of Sterling Cooper Draper & Pryce ooze the quintessential midcentury modern design trends that define an era. For todays designers, midcentury modern design is focused on bringing a modern sense of practicality and functionality to the iconic vintage style that Mad Men has captured so well.
Our team at Jackson Design & Remodeling was contacted by a couple with a La Jolla Farms home built in the 1960s by noted architect Dale Naegle. We set out to significantly update the home to accommodate a family with children, while remaining true to the homes history and classic design style.
It was important to our clients that we blend their divergent tastes while accommodating their school-age children. The home needed significant updating to accommodate the family. In the popular midcentury style of the day, the one-level home was originally built so that each bedroom was only accessible from the exterior corridor, as an intention to create an open and natural connection to the surrounding landscape. The remodel included the addition of an interior hallway, along with other structural changes and an exterior face-lift.
The neglected beauty of the original home, especially found in its original concrete flooring and bold beamed ceilings, was meticulously restored to give a feeling of expansive living. Although the entire interior of the home was remodeled with careful attention to materials, space planning and focal points, the kitchen and dining areas are strikingly clean and modern. We borrowed space from a bedroom and transformed some of the existing layout of the home, doubling the kitchens size. With the addition of white quartz countertops set against dark horizontally grained bamboo cabinetry, the kitchen shines. The contemporary island is surrounded by comfortable white leather stools and a trio of pendant globe lights, to offer the family an informal space for dining and entertaining. Modern appliances were meticulously placed throughout the kitchen to leave a more streamlined appearance, while an Italian Calacatta backsplash wraps the kitchen in luxury. Hand-selected slabs of dramatically veined marble were also selected for the stovetop.
The midcentury home's formal dining area is a natural extension of the kitchen.
The formal dining area is a natural extension of the kitchen. The original tongue-and-groove ceiling was kept intact but painted white to add a refreshing brightness to not only the room, but to the appearance of the rhythms within the beams. The dining room is furnished with a pair of vintage Barcelona chairs and decorated with pieces from the couples modern art collection.
The design of the remodeled home truly honors the past, while creating a comfortable and visually stunning home for the young family.

BUYERS FOUND: Richard and Tracey Lane have bought Waimate's old post office.
Waimate's old Post Office building is to be demolished, to the dismay of heritage advocates.
Richard and Tracey Lane have bought the council-owned building, with settlement date set for April 24.
However, Richard Lane said they had decided to demolish the building, as it would have cost more than $250,000 to strengthen it to the required standard.
"It's a decision I didn't want to make but, in the end, I simply couldn't make it work any other way," he said.
"I have a strong sentimental attachment to the building. My first ever job was at the Post Office."
He hoped the building replacing it would host about three businesses once complete. "It's a long process but I hope by this time next year, we would have at least started construction on the site," Lane said.
Waimate Edwardian Heritage Society secretary Elizabeth Niven was upset by the news.
"We hoped the the facade could have been maintained," she said. "The town does not have many buildings of this stature. It's always sad to see part of a place's history disappear."

Most space in a decade being built: report April 9, 2014 11:25 PM Share with others:
By Mark Belko / Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
Theres a whole lot of building going on in the suburbs of Pittsburgh.
In its first-quarter office report, the CBRE real estate firm found that 1.4 million square feet of office space is under construction in the Pittsburgh suburban markets the most in nearly a decade.
At Southpointe, more than 601,141 square feet is under construction. While more than half of it 383,141 square feet has been pre-committed to tenants like Ansys and Noble Energy, another 218,000 square feet will be available to firms looking for space.
In the Parkway West corridor, DiCicco Development is adding a 130,000-square-feet class A office building and Building 210 at Pittsburgh International Industrial Park will bring another 53,584 square feet, which has been leased to ANH Refractories.
Construction also has started on a 200,000-square-foot global headquarters for Industrial Scientific.
In the city, work has begun on the Gardens at Market Square project, which will add 128,000 square feet of class A office space Downtown. At Bakery Square 2.0 in the East End, another 400,000 square feet eventually will be available.
In addition, the Elmhurst Group has broken ground on the 105,000-square-foot Schenley Place development in Oakland, where there has been no new construction deliveries since 2009, according to CBRE.
The demand for space continues to be high. The overall class A vacancy rate for the Pittsburgh market was 5.4 percent for the first quarter. Downtown it was 5.6 percent.

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. -
Burglaries at construction sites throughout St. Johns County have been on the rise for the past couple of years.
The number more than doubled in 2013 and the increase in 2012 came with a huge increase in the number of building permits issued. About 660 more permits were issued last year than in 2012.
The St. Johns County Sheriff's Office said they really need the public's help in finding the burglars that are affecting local businesses.
Were hoping maybe they can find something out but thats kind of difficult to trace so well just have to take the hit, said Thomas Heath, president of Heath Electric Inc.
Heath Electric in St. Johns County recently had equipment stolen from one of its construction sites.
Temporary wire for an electric panel was taken from a locked site at a local mall. He has other wires but says that was his best and it cost him around $1,400.
It hurts your profit margin as its competitive now and you have a low profit margin now. You have to be concerned. Hey, am I going to make it if this keeps happening? Heath said.
Heath's site was locked, but the majority of construction sites burglarized were not. He said many sites go unlocked because companies don't want to haul heavy equipment back and forth to a job every day.
The St. Johns County Sheriff's Office said there were 23 sited construction site burglaries in 2012 and 54 in 2013.

This weekends 48th annual Brandon Home and Leisure Show will feature the latest indoor, outdoor, travel and recreation products, all under one roof.
Nearly 170 exhibitors will take over 96,000 square feet of the Keystone Centre starting Friday afternoon. Although the three-day event will be similar to years past, a new addition will include a selection of modular homes.
Show manager Dave Melcosky said the modular home business has really taken off in the past year and is something they wanted to be able to showcase.
"Because of the activity in the oilpatch and in the influx of new immigrants into Brandon, the housing market has changed," Melcosky said. "A lot of people looking to work near Virden, Melita and Pipestone, theyre looking at modular homes as opposed to housing because theres a shortage of housing in some of those areas."
There will be three modular homes on site including two vacation-style homes and one regular residence, along with a wide selection of hot tubs, sunroom additions, decorations for both indoors and outdoors as well as decks and fences.
"If youre decorating, buying or building or moving out to the lake, all the products that we sell encompass that."
On the travel and recreation side of things, he added, there will be plenty of boats, lawn and garden tractors as well as docks, fireplaces, motorcycles and quads and other motor vehicles on display.
Exhibitors have been busy setting up for the event since the Royal Manitoba Winter Fair wrapped up last week, he said.

Sprinkler systems all around the Truckee Meadows are coming out of hibernation following a long, cold winter. Local lawn services are scrambling to turn on sprinkler systems now that the weather has warmed up. Scott Leonard of Signature Landscapes says his crews are responding to calls from customers who are ready to start watering. "The weather changed from last week and freezing temperatures to near 80 degrees right now. It's about getting water on as fast as we can," said Leonard.
Sometimes the long winters can cause leaks, which eventually show up on your water bill. Leonard said the first thing to do is look for problems above ground. "If you're going to turn it on yourself, go through each zone. Walk your property, make sure there are no drip breaks, check your sprinklers, look for clogged valves," he said.
Another important tip is to check your water meter to make sure your system isn't leaking. "Inside the water pit is your gauge," said Leonard. "There's a small red wheel, if it's turning there's a leak," he added.
"So you want all your household water off, come out and check it. If everything's off and it's spinning, then it's time to call somebody to come out and investigate for a leak," Leonard explained.
Andy Gebhardt of the Truckee Meadows Water Authority says you can also check your water bill. "If your bill is higher than you think it should be, you might want to take a good look and see if something's going on," he said.
Once the sprinklers are on and working properly, it's important not to over water. Experts say right now about 5 minutes three times a day on your assigned watering days should do the trick. "Start it up slowly, give it a little drink. But you don't want to flood it early. It'll thrive," said Gebhardt.
The Truckee Meadows Water Authority is holding a free a workshop on Wednesday, April 9th at 5:30 to explain how to turn on your irrigation system. The address is 1355 Capital Blvd. in Reno.
