Demolition of flats for Games is least of Glasgow's troubles

    - April 8, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

KELVINGROVE is iconic; the Finnieston crane is iconic; even the Duke of Wellington wearing his cone has become iconic.

City Council leader Gordon Matheson should be embarrassed at handing the dreadful Red Road flats the same status.

The concrete monstrosities have dominated Glasgow's skyline for 50 years, but thankfully not for much longer. Plans to dynamite five of the six remaining towers have been cunningly brought forward to replace the customary fireworks during the opening ceremony to July's Commonwealth Games.

The 15-second demolition, the biggest seen in Europe, will be live on a 328ft wide screen at Celtic Park and beamed to a TV audience of one billion.

Typical Weegies. Find an empty, have a party and wreck it. Or maybe it's self-parody on the stereotype of the tight-fisted Scot.

Either way, it's sparked the biggest stooshie since Matheson's architectural aberration over George Square.

So, what relevance does such demolition have to a sporting celebration? Well, London 2012 opened with the history of Britain's Industrial Revolution and the NHS and by common consent was an Olympian success.

Glasgow 2014's opening is expected to reveal the city's rich history and culture, with the Red Road demolition woven into its social regeneration. And I suppose there will be contingency planning should demolition need to be postponed.

London's opening was directed by Academy Award-winning British director Danny Boyle. To hear Matheson's critics, he's hired Frankie Boyle.

It's a joke, they cry, something could go wrong, so let's not risk it (an uncanny echo there of Bitter Together's Project Fear message).

Demolition of Washburn's Morgan Hall underway

    - April 8, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Washburn Universitys Margaret Mulvane Morgan Memorial Hall $17 million renovation project is underway with demolition, said Richard Liedtke, project manager.

Demolition began on the halls northwestern corner at the beginning of March.

We continue to make progress as far as demolition goes, said Liedtke, the universitys executive director of enrollment management.

Limestone from the outside of the building and portions of marble from inside the building were saved and will be repurposed, Liedtke said.

Morgan Hall used to be a library. It had been housing several key Washburn offices, including financial aid, admissions and the business office.

The former librarys stacks, which were being used for storage, were being removed Monday, Liedtke said.

The area of the hall that used to house the presidents office and admissions has been gutted, Liedtke said.

That will be remodeled into new office space, he said.

The new office suites for human resources and university relations are completed.

Morgan Hall survived the 1966 Topeka tornado, which devastated Washburns campus and destroyed five major buildings, according to previous Topeka Capital-Journal articles. The university soon afterward arranged for the construction of a three-story addition to Morgan and put up four clock faces on its clock tower.

Commonwealth Games demolition plan faces growing backlash

    - April 8, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A petition has been made against the demolition of five tower blocks in Glasgow [GETTY]

By last night, 8,600 people had signed an online petition against the idea.

Commonwealth Games organisers provoked an outcry when they revealed that five of the six remaining blocks in the citys Red Road complex will be blown up on July 23.

The demolition will be beamed live to the opening ceremony at Celtic Park and be seen by millions of TV viewers.

Games chiefs claim razing the derelict 1960s blocks will show Glasgow is changing for the better and celebrate the role the flats have played in the lives of city families.

But thousands of people have disagreed and backed an online petition set up by former Scottish Socialist Party MSP Carolyn Leckie.

The place means a lot to people. They have fond memories of it

    Robina Brown Anderson

Critics say the idea is insensitive to former residents and to the asylum seekers who occupy the sixth block, which is due for demolition at a later date.

The son of Sam Bunton, the flats architect, is disgusted. Len Bunton, whose father died in 1974, said: The decision almost speaks of a contemptuous attitude, We hate this place, lets rip it down. Weve seen the demise of shipbuilding and other elements of Glasgows history. To glorify the demolition is appalling. The more I think about it, the angrier I become.

Bosses reply to criticism of Red Road demolition plans

    - April 8, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

NEWS of the demolition of the Red Road flats has caused a great deal of reaction.

Many questions have been asked about making this part of the opening ceremony for the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. We have put some of those questions to Dr Bridget McConnell, chief executive of Glasgow Life; David Grevemberg, chief executive of Glasgow 2014; and David Fletcher, director of regeneration at Glasgow Housing Association

Isn't the move to blow down the flats as part of an entertainment spectacular insensitive to the memory of the people who lived in them? They will clearly be upset at the demise of the place they once called home

McConnell: This bold image - for present and future generations - will create an unforgettable moment in time to mark how Glasgow continues to strive for better. For more than five decades the flats have played a role in shaping the lives of thousands of families, for whom these flats have simply been home. The end of Red Road is too important for Glasgow not to share.

Grevemberg: By sharing and commemorating the final moments of the Red Road flats with the world as part of the Opening Ceremony, Glasgow is showing it is a city that is proud of its history but does not stand still. It shows a city constantly regenerating, renewing and re-inventing itself. Our story, Glasgow's story, is always one of its people; their tenacity, their genuine warmth, their ambitions. And along with the story of the Commonwealth, we are reflecting the symbolism of where we have been and where we are going.

How can you guarantee the demolition will go off as planned when you will be dependent on other factors?

Fletcher: As with all of GHA's scheduled demolitions, this programme will be conducted within a full health and safety regime. The priority is, as it is in every case, keeping people safe and ensuring people and communities most directly impacted are involved and informed in the process. This demolition is no different in that regard. We have already demolished two blocks at Red Road and many blocks elsewhere in the city that have all gone to plan.

Grevemberg: Health and safety is paramount in all of this. Planning for the Opening Ceremony will also include a version of the show that does not include the demolition aspect should it not be possible to take place for any reason.

While the demolition will be spectacular, is the destruction of tower block slums really the message Glasgow wants to send out to the world, especially those in the Commonwealth who live in far worse slums than this?

McConnell: This is about more than creating an iconic moment for the Opening Ceremony; it is about the next step in the regeneration of one of Glasgow's most famous communities. It symbolises the changing face of the city over the years and recognises our proud social history. Glasgow's Opening Ceremony is right to celebrate that history, but we will do so in a sensitive manner.
