Who is the third best Grizzlies player? – Grizzly Bear Blues

    - February 20, 2021 by Mr HomeBuilder

Ja Morant is the undisputed best player on this team. Though we havent seen him this season, we have enough evidence that Jaren Jackson Jr. is right behind him at 2nd. So lets ask a question just for fun: whos number 3?

A few years ago, I introduced a theory called Flemings Law of the 3rd Power where I state how teams are as strong as their 3rd-best player. I brought this up a few years ago on the blog to talk about the playoff window with Mike Conley and Marc Gasol as the 1/2, with questionable 3rd options JaMychal Green, sophomore Dillon Brooks, a raw Jaren Jackson Jr., or a hobbled Chandler Parsons.

Now I use it to present a different route. The Grizzlies have great roster versatility, and really any player can come up and emerge as a 3rd guy on any given night. And going forward, its interesting to build a pecking order on who sticks around for the contending iteration of this team. At this current state of the Memphis Grizzlies, whos the teams 3rd-best player? I broke it down into 3 different categories.

Youre going to roll your eyes. Even as one of the strongest Dillon Brooks truthers, its hard to deny his inefficiency thus far. Of all the players this season with 15+ shot attempts per game, only Russell Westbrook and Kemba Walker have a worse effective field goal percentage than Dillon Brooks (45.9%).

Yes, some of it is his erratic shot selection, but a lot of it is his current role, as he shouldnt be a teams second perimeter option. His value will shine more once Jaren Jackson Jr. and Justise Winslow return to play, as evident through his play alongside Jackson last season. Hes someone who could be a 3rd-4th scoring option as a starter, or a 6th man bucket-getter. A Dillon Brooks thats in the right role is a good player to have on this team. Hes a big wing that can create his own shot at 3 levels, defend and play multiple positions, and add a dose of swagger and tenacity to the team.

The reason why hes on this list though is, his ceiling is one of a 3rd-best player. We saw that when the Memphis Grizzlies had that hot stretch from December-January last season, when he averaged 17.9 points on 43.7% shooting from the field and 40.8% from 3 (5.8 attempts per game) in that span (33 games). Those numbers are what youd like to see from a wing option next to Ja Morant and Jaren Jackson Jr.

However, his woeful inconsistency is probably what stops him from being a likely 3rd option. When hes on off-shooting games with wild shot selection or Bad DB as his biggest critics love to say its even hard to justify having him play more minutes than the other wing options in the rotation.

If somebody wanted to say that Brooks is the teams best 3rd player, theyre in a minority, but they might have a convincing argument.

Meanwhile, what a season its been for Kyle Anderson this season. Anderson has also been a good player, but it was tough to gauge his fit with this nxt-gen squad because of his shaky outside shot.

With the 3-point jumper now, holy smokes.

Andersons evolving shooting stroke has been one of the most positive developments, as hes already surpassed his career-high in single-season 3s. Hes also seen spikes in his scoring (5.8 to 13.8), 3-point percentage (28.2 to 38.8%), shot volume (4.9 to 10.7 FGA/g, 1.3 to 4.3 3PA/g), rebounds (4.3 to 6.3), and assists (2.4 to 3.8). His newfound 3-point shot has instilled confidence in his game, and its led to him being the most consistent player on the roster.

Andersons emergence as a 3-point threat also solidifies him as an ideal 3-and-D wing. Though he can facilitate and hit top-of-the-break 3s, hes also been cash spotting up in the corner 42% on corner 3s, per Cleaning the Glass. He can defend all 5 positions, as hes good with switches, and has the footwork and size to guard any archetype of players from LeBron James and Luka Doncic, to Anthony Davis and Zion Williamson.

Where Anderson also stands out is as a secondary playmaker, as hes been within the top-14th percentile in Assist Percentage, per Cleaning the Glass. His slow style of play often clouds how much patience and poise he plays with, as it allows him to make moves on the drive both as a playmaker and a scorer. That sort of secondary playmaking, especially at his size, is a huge asset for the coaching staff, as it gives them lots of lineup interchangeablility.

That sort of versatility allows him to potentially be the teams 3rd-best player on any given night. He allows them to go big or go small, to alleviate rebounding responsibilities off Jaren Jackson, and to get Ja Morant off the ball. With his versatility and his budding outside shot, hes a seamless fit next to anyone on the roster.

If you asked most people around the Grizzlies (fans or people who cover) who they need to be the Grizzlies 3rd-best player, theyd say either Brandon Clarke or Justise Winslow. The former was the standout rookie whose a perfect fit for whatever the Grizzlies are trying to do, and the latter is a big playmaker with a strong pedigree that was the prize out of the Andre Iguodala fiasco.

Last season, there was a very valid argument for Brandon Clarke to be the teams 3rd-best player. He paced the team, alongside Jonas Valanciunas, in most advanced statistical categories. Most of the Grizzlies killer lineups featured him in it, and his versatility made him a perfect fit wherever he was slotted as a small-ball 5 off the bench, or at the 4 next to Jaren Jackson Jr. or Jonas Valanciunas.

Though hes not on par with his efficiency from his rookie season (and its quite a bar to clear), hes still made leaps to his game. Despite the dip in efficiency, hes been more aggressive looking for his shot increasing his shots per game from 8.3 to 11.1, and his points per game from 12.1 to 13.0. Hes still a threat in the pick-and-roll, because of his floater in the mid-range and his lob instincts around the rim.

Where he could really make that step as a third fiddle is with his defense and his playmaking. Defensively, his advanced numbers dont pop like last season, seeing drops in Defensive Box Plus/Minus (0.7 to 0.0) and opponent field goal percentage differential (3.1 percentage points worse against Clarke, to 5.9 percentage points better). Hes making incremental improvements creating steals (88th percentile in Steal Percentage, 2.0%, per Cleaning the Glass) and not fouling (90th percentile in Foul Percentage, 2.5%). As a playmaker, his assist numbers havent made many improvements, but he has been making strong reads this season, and he possesses a very low turnover rate (5.5, tied for 2nd in the league).

The jumpshot may hold him back the most, as his shot overhaul has hindered his offensive efficiency. However, strides and consistency in these areas would still make him a part of the Grizzlies success.

Now if you ask most people who the 3rd-best player is on a healthy Grizzlies team, the popular answer would probably be Justise Winslow. Unfortunately, a little over a year has passed since the trade, and we still haven't seen him in a Grizzlies uniform.

Prior to his injury in the bubble, many raved about how Winslow looked in the mini training camp leading up to the return to play. Then, a one in a million injury happened.

So why does he still get to be considered in this conversation? Because of who he was before this injury-riddled year.

Justise Winslow can play any role makeshift point guard, combo guard, either forward spot, and a dash of small-ball 5. Hell simply unlock a lot of different combinations for the Grizzlies. They can have Ja off the ball more often with Winslow on the floor. They can go big with him at the 1 around Desmond Bane, Dillon Brooks, Kyle Anderson, and Jaren Jackson Jr., or they can run him as a playmaking 4.

All that is possible, because of Winslows physicality and playmaking. When hes playing down a position, or even his natural position at the 3, he can use his body to gain separation inside. And whenever hes playing up to the 4, he can use his speed to get by larger opponents. This malleable quality also bodes well on defense as well, as he can defend positions 1-5, and probably take on the most difficult perimeter assignment on any night. As a playmaker, hes been one of the better distributors from the forward spot generating assist percentages within the top 15 percentile for most of his career.

Obviously, health is the biggest factor for Winslows success with Memphis. In terms of on-court production, shooting will move the needle for his fit here the most. In his past 2 healthy seasons, he shot 37.7% from 3 on 385 attempts, which is ideal for a Ja Morant-centric system. If his shooting trends more in that direction, and less in the sub-25 ballpark where he was last season, thatd be a big boost for the Grizzlies.

Neither of these players are expected to be the 3rd-best player for this iterations apex, as itll likely need to be another wing scorer in that slot. For the short-term outlook though, its a promising sign going forward if either one of these players is the Ja and Jarens third wheel.

Jonas Valanciunas is probably the teams most impactful player. Hes one of the best per-minute players in basketball, and hes a mainstay around the top in most advanced metrics:

In addition, hes one of the best rebounders in basketball 5th in the league in total rebounding percentage (21.6) and 11th in Rebounds per Game (10.8) and his presence on the glass is massive for this young team.

Valanciunas has his shortcomings as a defender and as a floor-spacer, but his value is clear. His screen-setting opens up driving lanes for Ja Morant and the other perimeter defenders, and hes a consistent bucket when the team needs it. His low-post presence is immensely valuable. His footwork and his physicality down low help keep the post game in style, and he uses that same aggression to attack the glass and remind Grizzlies fans of Zach Randolph.

Yet, his limitations are why some see him as expendable. In the midst of the Twitter discourse, Valanciunas is having a career year, notching career-highs in points per game (16.5), assists per game (2.1), true shooting percentage (63.9), and steal percentage (1.1). Hes doing that without any dips in efficiency either.

Jonas Valanciunas is the prototype of the classical NBA center, but hes clearly still valuable in todays NBA. His impact and the little things he does for this young Grizzlies team give him the most compelling argument to be the teams 3rd-best player.

There isnt really a totally wrong answer between any of these players I mentioned. In fact, it highlights the teams depth and versatility of this roster.

If the Grizzlies are having to ground-and-pound their opponent and take advantage of Jonas Valanciunas mismatches, his value shines. The worth of secondary playmaking and lineup versatility is evident with Kyle Anderson and Justise Winslow. There are nights where the growth of Brandon Clarke and Dillon Brooks is on display, and you can see the fits alongside Ja and Jaren.

The team has 5 players at least that can step in as the third wheel on any given night, and that doesnt even include guys like DeAnthony Melton, Desmond Bane, and Tyus Jones who are an integral part to the teams success.

So dont take this as choosing between players. Use it as a means to celebrate the number of directions and options the Grizzlies have now and going forward.

Asbury Park beach club will be formed from sandy concrete canopies – Dezeen

    - February 20, 2021 by Mr HomeBuilder

Design offices including Esrawe Studio and Rojkind Arquitectos have unveiled plans for Asbury Beach Club, a resort in New Jersey that will feature sand-coloured concrete sunshades.

The club is located on the Atlantic Ocean in Asbury Park, a seaside town on the Jersey Shore coastal strip of New Jersey in the USA.

The project is a collaboration between Mexican studios Rojkind Arquitectos, Esrawe Studio and Cadena Concept Design plus American firms Anda Andrei Design, which is headed by Ian Schrager's former designer Anda Andrei, and New York firm Slade Architecture.

Asbury Beach Club will include two sites on the beach, a public lot on the north side and a private lot on the south side.

Due to the beach club being built on a floodplain with a zoning height limit, the building has been designed to be low-rise.

Held up by umbrella-shaped concrete columns, the development's roof doubles as an elevated pool deck reached via various staircases.

Changing rooms, exclusive cabanas and an outdoor sand gym will be housed on the private lot's lower level.

"This enclosed lower level is [going to be] clad in reclaimed wood to match the original boardwalk," said Esrawe Studio, whichwas named interior design studio of the year at Dezeen Awards 2020.

The concrete columns will extend to the public north side of the club, where a cluster of them will form a shade canopy.

Underneath the canopy, there will be seating and other public amenities, including showers and restrooms.

Sculpted from sandy-coloured concrete, the development's curved shapes will echo formations such as sea caves.

"When water, wind, sand and rocks interact, they alter the morphology of the earth to create niches, cavities and semi-open spaces interconnecting land and sea," said Esrawe Studio.

A privacy screen composed of precast concrete cylinders mounted on a thin steel frame designed to look like beach grass will be built on the building's west side.

To ensure maximum privacy for guests, this screen will extend 8 feet (3 metres) above the pool deck on the side facing the street.

The screen's precast cylinders and steel frame will taper along the north and east sides of the building until the screen is only a thin metal railing on the beach, providing open views to the sea.

Other projects informed by their surroundings include a stone-clad house in a woodland close to Antwerp which is reflected in the large pond that it overlooks, and a lakeside house in Sweden clad with pine slats to match its forest setting.

koto design envisions the future of hospitality with ‘hytte’ modular cabins – Designboom

    - February 20, 2021 by Mr HomeBuilder

in collaboration with aylott & van tromp, koto design unveils its latest cabin concept called hytte. developed in reaction to the current uncertainty of travel, and the need for more sustainable modes of tourism, the sculptural cabins offer the perfect retreat for travelers looking to escape into nature.

    images by merge visualisation

koto who specializes in modular homes, cabins, and small sculptural buildings provided all the architectural design on the project while aylott & van tromp curated the branding and cozy interiors. kotos clean and simple design captures a minimalist nordic aesthetic and in fact, hytte actually means cabin in norwegian. blackened timber on the elevations and roofs help blend the structures into the surroundings and the interiors are characterized by natural, earthy tones. each cabin features a spacious kitchen, living space and sleeping area with a shower room tucked away at the rear.

the idea behind the project is to provide clients with flexibility. each solution starts with one unit, then developers can decide to scale up to create a small, village-like community. in this way, hytte is perfect for big or small commercial ventures. the cabins are aimed towards socially- and environmentally-conscious consumers, who are looking to get away closer to home while still enjoying a dose of relaxation and escapism.

hytte is seeking ambitious partners to disrupt the current hospitality and tourism accommodation model from existing hotel brands to new start-up ventures, says nathan aylott, co-founder of hytte and aylott & van tromp.

aylott continues, the design for us wasnt purely aesthetics, all about its looks, for us it was about providing both client and consumer with something a little bit different in these strange times. on the client front, the ability to harness a site or landscape with minimal fuss, creating an additional revenue stream and complete flexibility was always in our minds. yet with the customer, we wanted to provide a sense of design led escapism and comfort that retains a raw feeling, the lovely paired back quality that comes from camping in the wild or being close to nature.

Tignish working to amend bylaws to allow modular homes in town – peicanada.com

    - February 20, 2021 by Mr HomeBuilder

The planning board committee for Tignish have been tasked with coming up with a recommendation to council on how to amend the towns bylaws when it comes to modular homes.

But finding the right terminology to amend the bylaw hasnt been easy.

Debbie Fennessey, the town councillor who chairs the board, has been scouring the Internet, researching other jurisdictions, to see if other places have done something similar but with no luck.

Everything is the same, its mobile homes, but if you look at their bylaws, theyre all 10, 11, 12 years old, she said. Nobodys got any updated bylaws.

Modular homes consist of several components that are built in a factory setting and then assembled on-site to create a new home. A mobile home is a prefabricated structure, built in a factory on a permanently attached chassis before being transported to a site.

Currently, Tignishs bylaws dont allow for mobile homes to be set-up within the town limits. Nor is there anything in the bylaws about modular homes. But in recent months, the town has received requests from people wanting to build modular homes, prompting council to look at amending their bylaws and set up guidelines around modular homes being built in Tignish.

Mayor Allan McInnis asked Coun. Fennessey at the towns council meeting on Feb. 8 on what was the hold up with the boards recommendation.

Why didnt you have some information, because I thought we would have enough to make a decision here tonight and look after the bylaws for modular homes, he asked her.

The mayor said hes aware of at least five people who want to construct modular homes in the town.

I know and Im looking online to see if I can find something that would be suitable for us, but I cant find anything, so were just going to have to come up with something, explained Ms Fennessey. Theres seven places Ive checked, and its not just PEI, its the Maritimes and out west, trying to find something we could follow and I cant find anything.

The mayor said the planning board should have something for council to consider at their next monthly meeting in March.

So we can get on this, so if someone decides they want to put a modular home in the town, we have it ready for the spring, he said. We want to build up the community as much as we can and thats what all this is about. We have to get this here established now.

It is small towns that suffer: Rural communities prepare for Ulster Bank pullout – The Irish Times

    - February 20, 2021 by Mr HomeBuilder

It is the little towns that will suffer over this, taxi driver Stephen Smith says of the Ulster Bank decision to pull out of the Republic of Ireland.

He and other traders in Ballyjamesduff, Co Cavan, had hoped the presence of three big employers Liffey Meats, Cavan Box and Modular Homes Ireland along with Ballyjamesduff Mart, would ensure the last bank standing in the town would remain open.

You can see the queue for the bank right down the street, says Smith. There are a lot of people from a 10km radius who come to this town to shop. They come from Cross Keys, Mount Nugent and Kilnaleck and visit the bank. If it closes, the nearest would be Cavan or Oldcastle.

Bank of Ireland closed its branch in Kilnaleck a few years ago and the impact on the town was hard, he says. It is all the small towns that suffer.

Smiths brother Trevor, a local councillor, agrees: Small towns are on a knife edge.

The bank plays a pivotal role in the town, he says. People come into town and they maybe pick up their pension and pay a few bills and spend a bit of money.

The fear is that once they have to go somewhere else for a bank, they will get their other needs there too.

While the town knew for some time that Ulster Bank was considering such a move, Cllr Smith says a decision to add a lodgement facility to the cash dispenser last year had given townspeople some hope that the branch had a future.

Maybe somebody else will buy it. Ulster Bank may sell the branch network. There are a few big businesses here, he says.

Ulster Bank previously rationalised its branch network in 2015, announcing the closure of branches in 14 locations, mainly rural. One of those was Ferbane in Co Offaly, where 1,000 people marched behind a coffin through the town in protest.

Pat OCallaghan, who runs the Ferbane Centra store, says the community had negotiated something of a settlement with the bank.

We wanted the building to be bought by a company who would run a business from there and we were lucky that it was sold to an accountancy firm with nine of 10 staff, he says.

Not having a bank in the village was a blow, he says, but they have worked around it. The local post office is still open and traders in the town can make bank lodgements there.

There is also a local credit union that provides electronic funds transfers and they do commercial loans now too, OCallaghan says.

He says his store has a cash machine through which his shop can recycle cash lodging takings which can then be withdrawn by others and the money is in our bank the next day.

Brian Flynn, who also took part in the protest, says younger people find it easier to manage online without a physical bank, but for some people, visiting the bank was an opportunity to get out and a highlight of the day. He says he feels sorry for staff who were told as late as Thursday night that no decision on the closure had been taken.

Samus Boland of Irish Rural Link says the organisation had been in discussion with the Government for about five years and had brought forward two papers on opening community-owned banks, in line with German models.

We looked at one model in particular that would involve the credit union movement, which has a lot of money on deposit and wants to actively lend.

That would require legislation, he says.
