Edgewater businesses, officials pleased with marijuana businesses

EDGEWATER Three months after Edgewater became the first city in Jefferson County to open retail marijuana shops, business owners and city officials say business is booming and nary a problem has been reported.

"We wanted to make sure we got it right the first time and wouldn't have to keep coming back to fix things," said Edgewater Mayor Bonnie McNulty.

Edgewater police chief John Hough said his department hasn't gotten a single complaint or call to any one of the city's four pot shops.

"We do extra patrol checks at the dispensaries every night," Hough said. "I've done a number of walk-throughs and they have everything in place and have been very cooperative and willing to work with us."

Two of the existing medical marijuana dispensaries converted to retail on Jan. 1. Northern Lights Cannabis Co., 2045 Sheridan Blvd., went into dual retail and medical sales, while Bud Med Health Center, 2517 Sheridan Blvd., dropped medical sales to focus entirely on retail.

"We were slammed with retail sales, and this is a small space and there's so many more rules about running a dual shop, like not crossing inventory, that we decided to focus entirely on retail," said Ashley Easton, Bud Med manager.

Both stores said they knew there'd be high demand for retail product but were floored at the amount of people who stood in line for hours the first week.

"It was like nothing I could have anticipated," said Eva Woolhiser, co-owner of Northern Lights Cannabis Co. "The excitement, the adrenaline at being a part of history. Everyone that came through the door couldn't believe they had this opportunity."

Other retail stores in the mix include New Age Medical, 2553 Sheridan Blvd., which began retail sales on March 28 to complement its existing medical side, and Greenwerkz Medical at 5840 W. 25th Ave., which hopes to begin offering retail by May.

NEW YORK [For Immediate Release - April 1, 2014] HGTV and DIY Network will premiere 31 new series, including three that star Jennie Garth, Daryl Hall and William Shatner. The two networks will bring back more than 54 favorite series and debut 24 specials in 2014. With 1,200-plus hours of new programming planned, the networks also have more than 22 pilots in active production. After a record-breaking 2013 that attracted an average of 72 million viewers per month, the networks continue to perform strongly among upscale viewers - HGTV ranked #1 among upscale W25-54 for the seventh consecutive year and #2 among upscale P25-54.

"Celebrities like Jennie Garth, Daryl Hall and William Shatner will deal with the highs and lows of actual remodels in many of our new series," said Kathleen Finch, president, HGTV and DIY Network. "Their stories are universally compelling to anyone who has been through the renovation process or is even considering it. Our ability to attract great personalities and tell relatable stories is the reason that HGTV and DIY Network dominate the lifestyle television landscape in the home category."

HGTV's new lineup will showcase eight new series, including celebrity home remodels, house-flipping adventures or winner-takes-all home renovation competitions. The Jennie Garth Project, premiering in June, will follow single mom and actress Jennie Garth, star of Beverly Hills, 90210, as she renovates a dated Hollywood Hills, Calif. house for herself and her three daughters. Flipping the Block, HGTV's next high-stakes renovation rivalry, will feature four couples who compete to win big money at auction in the ultimate home-flipping competition. And Flip It Forward will star real estate entrepreneurs and brothers David and Jason Benham as they leverage their good-natured sibling rivalry to help families find a fixer-upper and transform it into the dream home they never thought they could afford.

HGTV also will offer a closer look at the realities of handling home renovations with a family in tow. The new series Fixer Upper will feature husband and wife home-remodeling team Chip and Joanna Gaines as they balance their successful home-flipping business with parenting four young children. My Big Family Renovation will follow Austin, Texas-based author and popular mommy blogger Jen Hatmaker as she and husband Brandon sell their home and move with their five kids into a place that needs a major remodel.

At DIY Network, the brand is expanding its "celebrity home rehab" collection with the production of The Shatner Project, a series that follows the home renovation of actor William Shatner, recognizable to television fans as Star Trek's original Captain James T. Kirk, commander of the starship U.S.S. Enterprise. Daryl's Restoration Over-Hall, premiering in May, stars singer/songwriter Daryl Hall from musical duo Hall & Oates as he fuels his second passion for historic home restoration with his latest project, a quaint 18th century Connecticut home.

Additional new DIY Network series include Sledgehammer, starring popular licensed contractor Jason Cameron who will help homeowners smash their way to gorgeous new spaces by wrecking and remodeling their worst rooms. First Time Flippers featuring overzealous property virgins who put their do-it-yourself real estate skills to the ultimate test; Family Under Construction: Hawaii, which will follow along as a family of five lives through a whole home renovation in Hawaii and Disaster Decks, which will feature designer/carpenter Paul LaFrance as he rescues homeowners from their outdoor renovation woes.

The networks' popular home giveaway franchise continues to generate millions of entries each year. This year, HGTV will showcase the HGTV Dream Home in Lake Tahoe; HGTV Smart Home in Nashville; and a new HGTV Urban Oasis. On DIY Network, Blog Cabin, the interactive home building series, will invite fans to design the 2014 vacation home, a 1920s lakeside getaway located in Winter Haven, Fla.

LEAD: France's Hollande reshuffles cabinet after election drubbing By Clare Byrne, dpa

    - April 1, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Paris (dpa) - French President Francois Hollande carried out a major cabinet reshuffle Monday, a day after his Socialist Party suffered unprecedented losses in municipal elections which voters used to vent frustration with his leadership.

Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault fell on his sword as expected, announcing his resignation and that of his government two hours before a prime-time television address by Hollande.

Hollande was expected to announce popular Interior Minister Manuel Valls as Ayraults replacement at the head of a revamped team that will lead the government into European elections in May.

Valls was the obvious choice to take the helm after 22 months of Socialist rule that has been criticized as ineffectual and amateurish.

Polls show him to be Frances favourite minister, with an approval rating of 46 per cent according to one recent poll, double that of either Hollande or Ayrault.

With his tough talk on immigration and general air of authority, Valls cuts a contrast with the mild-mannered Ayrault, who struggled to rein in unruly ministers.

But it has also made Valls a divisive figure within the Socialist Party.

Hollande had promised to "draw a lesson" from the elections for town councils and mayors.

The speed with which he has rejigged his team reflected the severity of the punishment meted out by voters.

The Socialists and their leftist allies lost control of 155 towns of over 9,000 inhabitants to right-wing parties. The losses included Reims in the north-east, Toulouse in the south-west and the central city of Limoges, a Socialist stronghold for over a century.

    Spring cleaning in French politics

    - April 1, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Boththe results of the French local elections, and the planned ministerial cabinet reshuffle, promise a busy April for French politics. The UMP will announce their candidates for the European elections, and the campaign will likely begin next week. EurActiv France reports.

The second round of the localelections will be difficult for France's main political parties in the wake of the far rights first round triumph.

The project to reshuffle the French cabinet, which has been feet dragging since summer 2013, should be finalised by this evening.

The success of the National Front has forced the government to create a new cabinet lineup. Many agree that the Minister of the Interior, Manuel Valls, known for his strong stance against immigration and Romani people, will lead the government.

With regard to European matters, the reshuffle will be significant in the weeks leading up to the European elections.

The French Ministry for Foreign Affairs, and the Ministry of Finance, will suffer the most from personnel cutbacks. Seven ministers and deputy ministers oversee the states finances, but given that the next government wants to reduce ministerial numbers, this number is likely to fall.

The five foreign affairs ministers may also be reduced. Thierry Repentins position is secure, as he is the current minister of European affairs and Franois Hollandes right hand man, but there are others. Even if the position of European affairs is not cut, positions like Franais de ltranger (French abroad), aide au dveloppement (development aid) and francophonie (French-speaking) are deemed less important, and the line-up will no doubt change.

Laurent Fabius, the current Minister for Foreign Affairs, hopes to return to his role as Minister for Trade, which is currently held by Nicole Bricq, a deputy minister who will probably not make the cut.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs deals with trade negotiations, including the TTIP negotiations with the US. The controversial agreement will be an important endeavor for the next government.

Gifford Tower first floor undergoes major remodel

    - April 1, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Fremont Housing Authority staff finally have the elbow room they need at Gifford Tower.

Workers began remodeling the entire first floor of the 12-story housing structure last August and recently finished, including new and renovated offices, and improvements to the community center.

We were running out of space, Executive Director Sue Kleider said.

Weve expanded to a resident services coordinator, which is a new position, so we have an extra office for that person. Were looking at bringing on a deputy director to train for my position, so we needed extra space for them. And once the resident support services goes full-time, then well bring on another administrative assistant, she said.

New larger offices for the director and accounting were carved out of space that had been a resident responders apartment, and also served as maintenance storage.

One thing I really like about the new addition is our IT closet. It is just so handy, Kleider said.

The hardware kept in the ventilated closet was formerly housed in a small cabinet under a counter.

It was too warm in the cabinet to have that many servers running, and it got dusty. It was hard to keep them operating efficiently, Kleider said.

The remodel included construction of a break room, an amenity Housing Authority workers didnt previously have, and extra office space for the future deputy director.

Another new feature is a workroom for copying, metering postage and other chores.

High tech hits the showers: 5 ways to go deluxe in the bathroom

    - April 1, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Slava Lazebnikov can set the water temperature of his shower from the living room, program a shower playlist while having dinner and lift the toilet lid while lying in bed.

After 15 years in his Rockville, Md., home, Lazebnikov said the bathrooms were outdated and needed something, well, a little splashy.

Now showering in the upstairs bathroom is a digital spa experience. "It's really like in a car wash," he said.

In the rooms where families consume their media, technology's long been commonplace. And devices now allow homeowners to program their music and TV. Kitchens have refrigerators that tell them when they're low on milk.

    But ... the bathroom?

A fall 2013 survey of 7,600 homeowners by Houzz an online community focused on remodeling and design found that 60 percent of people are renovating bathrooms. Multiple shower heads, including those that simulate rain, are particularly popular, the survey said.

Lazebnikov and his wife, Margarita, live in a modest townhouse. But Lazebnikov, a software systems manager, "likes all sorts of gadgets that can be adjusted for the heck of it," he said and can install them himself.

A digital valve with five control panels is connected to both their smartphones and enables them to personalize every aspect of the shower. The devices can be pricey: The Kohler DTV system with rain head, four body sprays, fixed head and hand shower typically retails for $4,500. Add another $12,000 for the media package.

"Water comes at you from all sides and above," said Lazebnikov, pointing to various ceiling and wall water tiles from which the water flow and pressure can be regulated. You can create a drizzle, thunderstorm, waterfall, fountain or body spray.

Lazebnikov can set a rhythmic pattern of alternating water temperature. He can add steam "to surround me in warmth."
