Warmer temperatures are certainly a welcome relief, but melting snow and spring rain can cause a whole new set of problems, including a flooded basement.
TVs home repair expert Bob Vila offers seven tips for avoiding a flooded basement, with a few comments by local basement expert Rob Kesler of Bone Dry Waterproofing in Fenton.
Keslers company provides structural repairs, using epoxy and urethane injections, as well as interior drain tile systems. If your basement is finished, you may not be able to see whats happening behind the walls, said Kesler. Your first clue for moisture may be a musty smell or any signs of water, especially between the wall and the floor.
1 Check your gutters and downspouts
Keep gutters free of debris and position downspouts away from your homes foundation. Your goal is to drain storm water at least 3 feet away, so some home-owners may have to run extensions or troughs.
2 Repair foundation cracks
Inspect exterior foundation and your basements walls and floors. Use epoxy to fill any foundation cracks and apply masonry sealer indoors, if necessary. Typically, in a poured wall, Kesler would use high pressure urethane grout injection.
If its a cinder block wall, Bone Dry Waterproofing would either do a dig out from the outside or an interior drain tile system, re-routing the water underneath the floor.
Its a very common problem, he said.
3 Make sure your sump pump is working

Members of Columbine Baptist Church take notes during Bible study on March 19 in the Littleton area. George Abbas took over as pastor of the 38-year-old church six months ago, and led it through a rezoning process in order to get an elevator installed on the property. (Anya Semenoff, YourHub)
JEFFERSON COUNTY A strange thing happened when leaders from Columbine Baptist Church tried to get a permit to put in a new elevator: They were were told no because their land was not zoned properly.
Odd as that might sound for an organization that's been active for the past 38 years in a 73-year-old structure at 5660 W. Coal Mine Ave., the small church had to have its land rezoned March 18. Jefferson County also vacated a 10-foot piece of land to allow the church to keep its sign.
The rezoning not only allows the church to build its elevator and complete a minor add-on to the building's entrance, it also protects the building in case something ever happens to the church.

"If something devastating happened to the church, we couldn't rebuild it and likely the insurance company wouldn't stand up," Pastor George Abbas said.
The elevator is necessary for the church, Abbas said, because many of its 60 or so members are getting on in years. The suggestion was made and approved prior to Abbas' arrival as pastor in September.
The average age of church members is about 68, but Abbas said they are working to get some younger members.
"We are a small group," Abbas said. "We're working on that and trying to grow."
The seed for the zoning issue was planted about 20 years ago when Jefferson County changed what was allowed in certain zoning designations. According to Jeffco transportation and development director Jeanie Rossillion, the residential designation the church had had allowed for structures such as churches, but that was changed in the early 1990s.

Each year over 15,000 home fires, resulting in nearly $201 million in damages, are caused by dirty dryer vents. According to recent studies, nearly 92 percent of all laundry room fires can be traced back to a failure in cleaning either the dryer appliance or its ventilation system.
Dryer vent fires are usually caused by an electrical short sparking and igniting lint buildup inside of your dryer, stated Mr. Appliance President, Doug Rogers. This fire then spreads into the vent tubing going through the homes walls or under the home. By removing this lint build-up, it eliminates the flammable material that would ignite in the event of a short circuit.
Mr. Appliance offers these four tips for keeping dryer vents clean and clear of fire hazards:
1.Everyone already knows to clean out the lint trap between each load. However, it is also imperative to clean the lint trap itself, using soapy water and a cloth, as well as wiping along the edges of the trap.
2.Remove the lint trap and clean the inside of the machine for the lint that got through the lint filter. Use a damp cloth to wipe around inside of the dryer and grab all of the escapee lint pieces.
3.Unplug the dryer and pull it away from the wall. Remove the vent tubing attaching the dryer to the wall and clean each end of the dryer vent tubing. Be sure to pay attention to the ends, as this is where most of the lint will build up.
4.Clean the dryer vent leading outside of the home annually. This service requires specialized equipment and professional services and removes the threat of lint build-up inside the walls of the home. Call your local Mr. Appliance to schedule an annual appointment.
As a final thought, Rogers commented that the more people who know about the dangers of dirty dryer vents, the more impact we can have on stopping this rampant problem and save homes, and lives, from these fires.
