KOTA KINABALU: When it comes to honouring their ancestors, no amount is too much for some Chinese.
This includes buying a paper-made Feng Shui boat priced at RM488.80 to burn for their loved ones in the Qing Ming Festival on April 5.
Customers wont be thrifty with purchasing offerings and burn prayer paraphernalia for their ancestors, said Kenny Wong, manager of Rong Ji Tang at KK Taipan, Inanam.
Rong Ji Tang started its operation in November last year, selling an assortment of prayer paraphernalia for burning.
Wong said the reason the Feng Shui boat, manufactured in West Malaysia, was so expensive was due to its craftsmanship. Indeed, tiny papers were folded and stuck together to form the base of the boat.
So far, Rong Ji Tang has sold around six of the Feng Shui boats.
Then there is also the double-storey bungalow complete with furniture, cars, maid, security guard and lawn that is priced at RM148 each. Transparent plastic sheets are attached to the paper bungalow as windows that allow customers to look into the furniture placed in the rooms.
Traditional replicas of houses are cardboards with windows, doors, roof and bricks printed on them which cost around RM18.
The bungalow is much more realistic in terms of its interior, he explained.
Wong said Rong Ji Tang also sold pre-packaged bags of boxes containing the necessary items for the Qing Ming festival, such as paper clothes and hell notes.

The abandonment of an 80-year-old mentally challenged woman reportedly by a police team attached to the Vanitha police station at midnight in the city recently once again brings to focus the need to sensitize police personnel on compassion and human values.
The incident caused a public outcry resulting in the Kerala State Womens Commission registering a case and the Additional Director-General of Police (North Zone) N. Shankar Reddy seeking a report. Subsequently three police personnel including two women were suspended by the Commissioner of Police based on an inquiry report.
However, it has to be pointed that the Koyilandy Circle Inspector C.R. Haridas came forward as a Good Samaritan to help the woman.
He along with two other police personnel who were on their way to Koyilandy in plainclothes were eyewitnesses to the incident.
The woman had to be sheltered at the Koyilandy police station at night. Later her relatives were informed and she was taken home the next day. The inquiry found that local people had handed over the woman who was roaming in the city to the Vanitha Police station so that she would be dropped at her home.
Many feel that the police department regardless of coming up with various projects, including the Janamaithri Police Scheme (Community Policing Scheme) to refurbish its image, has not been gender sensitized and made people-friendly.
A study report on women victims of crimes in Kerala 2012-13 conducted by the Institute of Social Sciences, New Delhi, for the State police Chief says that crimes against women in the State are found in all the regions, among all religions and among women of all age groups in proportion. All the crimes which were reported in earlier times still occur, while new ones are coming to light due to the technological advances.
Incidentally, records with the police reveal that cases of atrocities against women have been on the rise in Kozhikode city for the past five years.
As many as 654 cases of atrocities against women were registered in 2013. The figures were 525 (2012); 556 (2011); 425 (2010) and 409 (2009).

Missouri Department of Transportation crews are close to finishing replacing culvert pipes along the first half of the Highway A improvement project.
Judy Wagner, MoDOT area engineer, said there are two more culvert pipes to be replaced along the section between Union and Highway YY at Krakow.
After that we will try to begin culvert replacement work from Krakow to Washington, Wagner said. There are seven pipes along that section.
The work involves closing both lanes of the highway at points where culvert pipes under the highway are excavated and replaced with new pipes.
Motorists need to plan on making detours, as crews will be completely closing the highway where work is being done.
MoDOT encourages drivers to use Highway 47 as an alternate route during this preliminary construction work.
Meanwhile, N.B. West Contracting Company, the contractor, has started preliminary work on the improvement project.
Wagner said the contractor plans to begin work next week on replacing driveway culverts and ditch work starting at Union and heading north.
Wagner anticipates that it will take two construction seasons to complete improvements along the 7.2-mile stretch of highway.
The first segment, from Union, just north of the Independence Drive intersection, to Highway YY at Krakow is scheduled to be completed by the end of this year.
