Firm Forest Gardens, which supplies timber products to DIY and gardening stores nationwide, has taken on 100 new workers to try and meet a fivefold rise in demand for fence panels.

Its sales director John Gomersall said: "We're witnessing demand that is upwards of five times the normal level - and still increasing.

"The shortage is primarily due to insufficient raw material availability, caused by both the recent upturn in demand for construction timber and the unusual series of five major storm periods since November of last year, leading to a dramatic upturn in demand for replacement fence panels.

"The storms may have died down but the long-term implications are still being felt.

"Add to this the fact that Spring marks the time of year when we'd normally be building stock levels ahead of the core gardening period and you can begin to understand the pressures that suppliers such as ourselves and retailers and trade outlets are currently dealing with."

Streatham, south-west London based firm Premier Sheds & Fencing has posted a prominent warning on its website.

It reads: 'Due to high demand and shortage of fencing timber, prices are changing daily. Please phone for current prices.'

Prices for its six-foot fence panels have risen twice in a week - up 50 per cent from 20 to 30 - and they are still out of stock.

Simone Gallen, editor of magazine Fencing & Landscaping News, said that there are reports of DIY enthusiasts going to great lengths to grab any available timber as demand outstrips supply from sawmills.

She said: "There is panic buying with prices soaring since the storms at the end of 2013.

Gardeners have been hit by a national shortage of fences at the height of the DIY season - with panels changing hands for up to four times their usual price on the black market.

Prices have rocketed to record levels as a result of a 'perfect storm' of severe winter weather and a housebuilding boom.

Many DIY chains and hardware stores have run out of traditional lap fencing, which is being offered for up to 80 a panel to panic buyers on the black market.

The veteran NOZIC had dropped to his lowest ever mark when gaining his 10th success over fences at Plumpton and though 6lb higher he should still take some beating. He's handed the vote over Tokyo Javilex, who was having just his second start over fences when scoring at Sedgefield but has been raised 7lb. Mon Chevalier's form figures flatter him as he's been beaten a long way in recent starts but Walden Prince has shown enough potential in three runs over fences to be considered. Islandmagee has only had three runs over fences and definitely improved on his latest start at Wincanton.

SPOKANE, Wash.--Spokane police said they arrested a thief with six felony convictions after officers found him in a stolen car on Friday.

Michael Harris, 28, drove into an alley and ran from officers by jumping two fences and dodging in and out of traffic on Wellesley, according to police.

Officers were able to find Harris and arrest him.

Officers said they found a reported stolen Apple Mac Book, Apple hard drive, several charging devices, a watch, a number of broken cell phones and shaved keys inside the car Harris was driving.

Harris was booked into the Spokane County Jail on charges of 2nd Degree Possession of Stolen Property and 1st Degree Taking of a Motor Vehicle without the Owners Permission. Harris has four adult felony convictions for 3rd Degree Assault, Attempt to Elude, 2nd Degree Theft, and 2nd Degree Burglary. He also has two juvenile felony convictions and 12 misdemeanor convictions. Collaboration between the Spokane Police and the Spokane County Prosecutors Office has resulted in the Prosecutor requesting a $50,000 bond for Harris. Harris was set to appear in court on Monday.

Man hops fences and dodges traffic trying to escape SPD

ST. CHARLES COUNTY Rodney Zerr, St. Charles Countys former emergency management director, filed Tuesday as a Democratic candidate for county executive.

Zerr, who was laid off in 2010 during a budget crunch, said hes an alternative to career politicians.

He said that includes incumbent Steve Ehlmann, a former state legislator and circuit judge, and Ehlmanns Republican primary opponent state Rep. Doug Funderburk, who previously was a county councilman.

I have a concern with career politicians staying in office for extended lengths of time, jumping from one office to another, said Zerr, 61. It goes for both.

Ehlmann, of St. Charles, disputed Zerrs characterization. Politics has been my third career, Ehlmann said.

He said he was a teacher for nine years, then a lawyer in private practice while serving part time in the Legislature. His full-time government jobs began when he was elected judge 14 years ago. The executives post also is full time.

Funderburk also expressed irritation, pointing out hes been a part-time county and state lawmaker while an electrician at Boeing Co., where hes worked more than 30 years. In contrast, he said, Zerr was a full-time government employee for decades.

Zerr, who lives near OFallon, said he didnt enter the race out of spite against Ehlmann. When he was laid off, Zerr said, the emergency office he headed was part of the sheriffs department. Earlier his agency was under the executive.

Zerr held professional public safety jobs for 32 years, including 12 years as emergency director. His brother, Rick Zerr, is a GOP circuit judge first elected as a Democrat. Their first cousin is married to state Rep. Anne Zerr, R-St. Charles.

Tuesday was the last day to file for the Aug. 5 primary.

Crews are widening Interstate 75 north of the Sumter Boulevard interchange in North Port.

SARASOTA COUNTY

Interstate 75 from Sumter Boulevard in North Port to River Road. Crews widening the highway to six lanes. Expect lane closures from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.

I-75 from University Parkway to the Charlotte County line. Expect delays. Crews are installing closed-circuit cameras, roadside sensors and other equipment for an intelligent transportation system.

I-75 at Fruitville Road, Laurel Road, Jacaranda Road and Sumter Boulevard. Crews replacing overhead signs. Lane closures between 10:30 p.m. and 6 a.m.

I-75 at Jacaranda Boulevard and Laurel Road. Crews installing lights. No lane closures expected.

U.S. 41 between Shamrock Boulevard and the Lowes entrance in Venice. Southbound outside lane closed from 9 p.m. Fridday to 5:30 a.m. Saturday while crews construct a new driveway.

Fruitville Road from McIntosh Road to Honore Avenue. Intermittent outside lane closures from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. while crews inspect and repair drainage.
