Denver carpet retailer Sloanes Carpet Secret fulfilled their promise of carpet, pad and installation at no cost to the winning entrant for their recent Best Stories Facebook contest. The Schauerhamer family of Castle Rock, Colorado, won for their entry. The installation occurred Tuesday, March 11, 2014, at the Schauerhamer home.

This was a good experience for the company, said Sloanes owner Scott Alban. Were considering doing more promotions like this in the future and were likely to focus increasingly on helping charities and nonprofits our community.

The winning story submitted by the Schauerhamers provided a light, humorous and relatable focus on the inevitable wear and tear borne by carpet resting beneath the feet of a growing family:

"If any carpet has been put to the test, it is ours. For the last ten years it has been beaten and abused by four kids. It has been through art projects, backyard muddy messes, 'creative' wall painting, potty training and sick kids. This carpet really deserves to be put out of its misery!"

Sloanes Carpet Secret representatives reached out to each entrant and thanked them for participating.

The Schauerhamers are repeat Sloanes Carpet Secret customers and graciously acquiesced to the presence of a photographer at the installation. Photos from the event were posted on Sloanes Carpet Secret Facebook Page.

The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) is the latest professional organization to boycott Israel, the Guardian reports.

The RIBA council decided last week to call for the suspension of its Israeli counterpart, the Israeli Association of United Architects, by the global architectural body the International Union of Architects.

The motion was passed by 23 votes to 16 with 10 abstentions.

Addressing council members before the vote, former RIBA head Angela Brady said that failure to back the motion would send a clear message to the world that we as an institution turn a blind eye or by inaction support whats going on land grabs, forced removals, killing the human rights, and reinforcement of apartheid.

But other council members pointed to human rights violations in other parts of the world, such as North Korea, which is a member of RIBA. "Don't you think architects are designing prison camps and torture chambers there?" asked one council member, Francesca Weal.

Prof Baruch Baruch of the IAUA said the decision was "astonishing". He added: "I don't think architects can be blamed for government policies. I don't think boycotts will help to solve any of the problems in the Middle East."

His organization, which includes Israeli-Arab architects, was not complicit in settlement construction. "A lot of members are against settlements and building in the West Bank. They won't be helped by a boycott."

The vote follows a similar motion earlier in the week by the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland.

Rhyne Restoration advises that after a major storm, it is normal to inspect the roof and gutters but many are unaware of the extent of storm damage to the siding on their homes. Water and moisture infiltration can cause house siding to expand, mold, deteriorate, warp, buckle, etc. However, many problems can be remedied if caught early on.

System for inspection of your siding:

Look for Edge Cracks and Discoloration. Damage occurs most commonly around chimneys, nearest the ground, where roofs dead end at walls, and where gutters are present, check there first. Inspect the bottom edges of house siding. Dew tends to settle on the bottom edge and absorb into the entire panel. A major storm can cause storm damage much faster than normal deterioration. If there are cracks ("edge checking"), chipping of the laminate ("delamination"), or rot ("fungal degradation"), moisture has entered house siding.

Compare for Extra Thicknesses or Swelling. Inspect the panels up under the eaves and then compare with the panels nearest the ground. When siding absorbs moisture, the panels thicken or swell. This is referred to as "thickness swell." This may occur along the edges, joints, around nails, or throughout the entire panel and can be more prevalent as storm damage commented Todd Rhyne, founder of Rhyne Restoration.

The Fool Proof Thumb Pressure Test. When no visual storm damage is present, simply push on the house siding with an extended thumb. If the siding indents at all, there is damage.

House siding damage is usually due to moisture and/or poor installation. Siding can start to deteriorate within 5 to 10 years; however, damage occurring as early as 2 years is not uncommon.

Storms, especally major storms can exacerbate the damage. High winds and blowing rain can force water into siding and cause major damage that can be repaired if caught quickly.
