Addison, Illinois - Schreder Lighting, a manufacturing leader of outdoor LED lighting solutions, has announced that its Ampera LED Road Lighting Luminaire Family received two Next Generation Luminaires(NGL) Awards during the Solid-State Lighting (SSL) Design Competition. The Ampera Maxi was recognized in the Major Roadway Lighting category while the Ampera Midi triumphed in the Collector Roadway Lighting category. Sponsored by the United States Department of Energy (DOE), the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) and the International Association of Lighting Designers (IALD), the competition seeks to encourage technical innovation and recognize and promote excellence in the design of energy-efficient LED luminaires. The awards were presented at Strategies in Light in Santa Clara, California, on the evening of February 26, 2014.

The Ampera, an LED road lighting luminaire for an optimized investment, was selected from a total of 102 product submissions by a jury composed of a diverse range of professionals across the outdoor lighting community, including experts from architectural lighting firms, utilities, municipalities and facility management companies. Ampera offers a complete lighting solution that retrofits for older less-efficient fixtures in pedestrian areas, bike paths, residential and commercial streets, rural and urban roads, and highways. Options include motion and speed detection and remote management.

The Ampera Maxi, the largest of three sizes available in the series, can be incorporated in major roadway, street-collector, and pole-mounted residential lighting applications. It is designed to maximize efficiency and minimize the total cost of ownership and delivers a lighting output equivalent to 250-watt metal halide fixture. The Ampera Midi can be incorporated into residential streets, mixed commercial street and urban areas and rural road lighting applications. Ampera Midi, the smallest of three sizes in the Ampera family, is designed to maximize efficiency and minimize the total cost of ownership and produces lumens equivalent to a 150-watt metal halide fixture. A Mini size is also available and provides lighting comparable to a 50-watt metal halide.

Schreder outdoor lighting luminaires were installed on poles at appropriate heights along roadways and parking lots at the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute to evaluate performance and design. With a clear objective of identifying LED lighting products that are worth specification, NGL judges particularly appreciate the excellent light distribution, color, glare control, easy installation and value offered by Ampera. This is not just a beauty contest, said DOE Solid-State Lighting Program Manager Jim Boderick. The winners also have to perform well. The NGL competition links energy-efficiency with lighting quality. The judges applauded the color, light distribution and glare control of these roadway luminaires.

About the Next Generation Luminaires Awards The NGL Solid State Lighting Design Competition was launched in 2008 to promote excellence in the design of energy-efficient LED luminaires for general illumination in commercial lighting applications.The idea is to make it easier for lighting designers and specifiers to find LED lighting products that are worthy of specification. That means NGL-recognized products have to measure up on many fronts. The judges care about suitability and quality, not just energy-efficiency. The competition began evaluating indoor and outdoor products separately in 2012, and the 2013 outdoor lighting winners were held in February 2014.

The federal government has handed out the first two contracts of several that will be awarded as part of an $190-million renovation of the Government Conference Centre.

The Government Conference Centre at the corner of Rideau Street and Colonel By Drive.

Ottawas KWC Architects, in a joint venture with Torontos Diamond and Schmitt Architects, have received a $3.6-million contract to act as the prime consultant on the project.

They will be responsible for preparing the design, construction tender documents and administering contracts, according to the original request for proposals, posted on the federal governments BuyandSell.gc.ca website.

Public Works and Government Services Canada has also awarded PCL Constructors Canada Inc. a $2.6 million contract to provide construction management services on the project.

That contract will require PCL to provide pre-construction advice and minor construction work.

It will also see the company provide quality control, project administration and coordinate other contractors on the site.

Only five companies were invited to bid on the job. PCL beat out EllisDon Corp., M. Sullivan & Son Ltd., Verreault Inc. and Carrillion Canada, which was in a joint venture with Pomerleau Inc.

This will be the first major renovation at the conference centre since the 1970s.

The seed of a future career was planted early in David Hails.

I watered plants on the way home from school every day, said Hails, who as a 9-year-old would walk to his job at Everything Green, a since-closed Greensburg plant store.

An entrepreneur even then, he grew his own plants to sell in the shop.

I grew sensitive plants the ones where you touch them and they'd fold up, he said. They were big in the '70s. I'd sell them for 50 cents each. I had a mother plant at home that would produce the seeds.

His early agrarian efforts have germinated into a flourishing enterprise.

Hails owns three businesses in Washington Township and wants to expand them.

In April, he'll seek approval from the township supervisors to join five parcels along Goodview Drive that he's bought during the years into one 20-acre property, which he intends to name the Everything Green Business Park, after his childhood post.

Cheryl Dickey, Washington Township's planning commission secretary, said Hails is finalizing paperwork and she isn't aware of any no problems related to the proposal.

He's a good business for the township, Dickey said.

Entrepreneur wants to join parcels to expand restoration, plant business

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet plans to restrict traffic to one lane on the US 68/KY 80 Eggners Ferry Bridge during daylight hours starting Wednesday, March 19, according to Keith Todd, Public Information officer for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet's District One and Two.

The lane restriction is to allow concrete patching on the bridge deck.

The US 68/KY 80 Eggners Ferry Bridge is at US 68 Marshall County mile point 28.146 and Trigg County mile point 0.0 at the western entrance to Land Between The Lakes National Recreation Area.

Todd said the KYTC District 1 Bridge Crew will be using high strength concrete to patch the deck driving surface. Due to the time required for concrete to cure by the end of the day, the work is expected to take about a week to complete.

Motorists should be prepared to encounter one lane traffic with alternating flow controlled by flaggers from about 8 a.m. to about 5 p.m., CDT, each weekday, whenever weather allows. Motorists be alert for slowing and stopped traffic on the bridge approaches. Appropriate caution is required where equipment, flaggers, and mainteance personnel are on the bridge deck in close proximity to traffic flow, he added.

The existing Eggners Ferry Bridge opened to traffic in March 1932. It carries approximately 2800 vehicles across Kentucky Lake/The Tennessee River in an average day.

A 322 ft. span of the Eggners Ferry Bridge was struck and knocked into Kentucky Lake by the 8200 ton Cargo Ship Delta Mariner on the night of January 26, 2012. KYTC engineers developed plans to rebuild the missing span and restore traffic to the bridge in 17 weeks.

Work has already started on construction of a replacement bridge immediately downstream from the existing Eggners Ferry Bridge. Work on a bridge across a lagoon and earthen causeways for the new lake crossing are nearing completion. Work on a new $131.5 million Basket Handle Arch main river crossing at the site is expected to start in a matter of weeks. For more information go to http://www.lakebridges.com.
