1. How did I learn to take care of your lawn? Mowing my own lawn.
An estimated 85 million American households, or 72%, do some work in their yards, whether cutting the lawn, planting a garden, or otherwise tending to their outdoor space, according to the National Gardening Association.
But a growing number also hire someone to make their lawns look good. Nearly 27 million of those households also used lawn services and landscapers in 2012, according to the National Gardening Association, up a whopping 20% from 22 million in 2010, when belts were still tight from the Great Recession. The Professional Landcare Network, an industry group also known as Planet, found that Americans who turned to outsiders on average expected to spend $700 on mowing, edging and leaf cleanup last year and another $400 on lawn care, such as fertilizers and weed control.
Heres the thing: Starting a lawn- and landscape-maintenance service a business that can do as little as mow the grass or as much as fertilize and prune shrubs and trees requires little more than a mower and business license. There is almost no required training. So how can consumers feel confident that the person turning their lawn green knows his or her stuff?
Kathryn Hahne, who runs the SmartScape landscape water conservation and education program in the Tucson, Ariz., area, says homeowners should press their lawn service about certifications, whether from a national industry group or state and local programs. Even though that doesnt guarantee quality, it does show some education in the field. Some states require those who apply pesticides and fertilizers to have some kind of training as well.
Homeowners should also check that the firm has a business license and is insured, so that the homeowner isnt liable for injuries or damages, says Katherine Hutt, a spokeswoman for the Better Business Bureau. The BBB has seen a steady rise in the number of complaints about lawn services in recent years, but theres also been a big jump in the number of people checking the BBBs national database, which suggests consumers also are doing their homework.
Master Gardeners and county extension agents are another resource homeowners can tap before hiring a lawn service. While they wont give recommendations about individual firms, many extension agents offer tips about lawn care and about hiring a lawn company.
2. The more often you use us, the more often you need us.
Golf-course putting greens are cut every day to keep the grass at a mere eighth of an inch and are spoon-fed fertilizers and weed killers. Your lawn, however, is not a golf course, and trying to keep it looking like one will cost more than most want to spend.

A bill authored by U.S. Sens. Al Franken, D-Minn., Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., and Rep. Rick Nolan, D-Minn., to give the go-ahead on a land exchange between the Fond du Lac Band and Carlton County is set to become law after clearing both the Senate and the House.
The legislative fix, passed in the Senate late on Thursday and expected to be signed into law in the near future, will let the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa and Carlton County perform a key land swap. The exchange, according to the Democratic lawmakers, is beneficial to both the band and the county, letting them manage their lands more effectively.
This land transfer is important to both the Fond du Lac Band and to Carlton County the band supports this, the county supports it, and the Department of Interior supports it, said Sen. Franken.
This long-awaited agreement is the right thing to do for both the Fond du Lac Band and Carlton County, Klobuchar said in a news release.
This long-awaited exchange helps rectify the broken 1854 treaty between the Fond du Lac Band and the federal government by returning original land to the Band to construct much needed housing, Nolan said in a news release. In return, Carlton County will receive non-reservation land now owned by the Band, opening up valuable new timber and forestry resources.

I HAVE TO go to the bathroom.
No, really, I do. Because thats where the glass-wall shower is. The one that appears to be hanging in midair, higher than the treetops, peering over Lake Washington far and wide. The Cascades stuffed into little white hats and lurking there behind the bright and shiny skyscrapers of Bellevue.
Homeowner Dilys Walker leads the way and simply waves toward the room as introduction.
It needs no other.
The No. 1 priority for us was the view, says Walker. With that she heads to the master bedroom. Same view, only this time Walker and her husband, Stefano Bertozzi, can get it lying down, snuggled beneath comforters.
Walker and Bertozzi, both doctors, moved to Seattle from Mexico when he took a job with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Their home in Cuernavaca, of course, had a strong indoor-outdoor connection, and they wanted that here, too. The couple rented in Leschi initially, mapping out nearby open houses for house-hunting walks.
We crossed it off our list because it was a one-bedroom, Walker says of their home, a real study in geometry cloaked in silver standing-seam metal and stark-white-painted cedar. But we went anyway. The minute we walked in, literally, we knew that this was it. From then on it was, How can we make this for us?
It was something they thought about for a year, cramming themselves into the place, daughter Lena, 13, sleeping in the closet. (It was a really big closet, with windows, her mother says.)
Robert Hutchison, their architect, describes his work as a substantial interior renovation. But it feels more like a residential rebirth: the 1980s home cantilevered over its steep slope (tests were done; the home is securely tethered) with that new master suite. Above that is a ships-ladder climb to a crows nest of a loft: Bertozzis office.
We loved the whole idea of keeping the white shell and making it more organic within, Walker says.

The Actiontec Wireless Network Extender Plus Powerline Network Adapter 500 Kit (retail model PWR51WK01) is a sure, and easy way to extend your network, both wired and wireless. It's a good fit for a large home with concrete walls, or separate households in an apartment building that want to share a single Internet connection.
It's far from perfect, however. The kit uses slow Wi-Fi and Ethernet standards and hence provides connection speeds only fast enough for casual Internet sharing and mild file sharing. Additionally, the included adapters don't come with a pass-through power socket, and one of them is very bulky.
In all, if you're looking for a quick and effective way to extend your home network, at the current street price of around $90, the PWR51WK01 is a very good buy. For more choices on power-line products, check out this list.
The new Actiontec kit comes with a very large WPB3000 adapter which has a built-in Wi-Fi access point.
Bulky design, easy to setup The kit includes two power-line adapters of different models. One of them is the compact, adapter PWR500 model , and the other is a new WPB3000 model that's about five times its physical size. The former is a traditional adapter with a single LAN port; the latter has two LAN ports and a built-in Wi-Fi access point.
As is the kit's intention, you connect the PWR500 to your existing router using a network cable (one short cable is included with the kit), and place the WPB3000 at the far corner. When you plug both of them into their power socket, the two will connect to each other using the home's electrical wiring. Now you can add two wired clients, such as two desktop computers, to the network using the two LAN ports on the WPB3000. On top of that, you can also add many Wi-Fi clients to the network by connecting them to the WPB3000's built-in Wi-Fi network.
The above is also exactly how you set the kit up. Included in the box is a sticker with the default Wi-Fi network (network name and password) printed on it. With that information, there's nothing else you need to do to start using the kit. The fact that you can place the two adapters far away from each other, up to about 1,000 feet in terms of power wiring length, means the kit is a lot more effective than traditional Wi-Fi range extenders.
Note, however, that both adapters take the shape of a two-prong snap-on power adapter, and neither has a pass-though power socket. While this is OK for the PWR500 since it's very compact, for the other, this is a terribly bulky design. When used, it will for sure crowd the wall socket and block access to adjacent receptacles. And since that power-line adapters require to be plugged directly into the wall (and not on a power strip or protector) to work well, make sure you have multiple power sockets at the far corner where you intended to plug the WPB3000 in.
Also note that power-line adapters tend to come in a kit of two because you need at least two adapters to create the first power-line connection. After that you only need one adapter per additional connection. That said, you should buy the PWR51WK01 kit only if you don't already have any power-line adapters, otherwise, just the WPB3000, or alternatively the ZyXel PLA4231, is needed for the Wi-Fi extending purpose.
Both adapters come with a security button to create a secure connection between them (so nobody can tap in your network by using their own power-line adapter, a seniority that's very possible if you live in a multiple-unit housing complex), and the WPB3000 also support Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS). WPS allows for quickly adding a Wi-Fi device to network by pressing a button, you don't even need to know the network's name and password.
