The same team thats razing the Metrodome in downtown Minneapolis is preparing for another noteworthy project on the other side of the Mississippi River: demolition of the Island Station power plant.
At 10 a.m. Sunday, Little Canada-based Frattalone Cos. and Idaho-based Advanced Explosives Demolition will implode the iconic smokestack atop the structure along the Mississippi River at 380 Randolph St. in St. Paul.
The long-vacant, nearly century-old coal-burning plant is coming down to make way for unspecified new development.
Frattalone in February obtained a demolition permit for the project, which will be done in multiple phases. The permit, which estimates the value of the work at $150,000, is good for 180 days, according to Robert Humphrey, a spokesman for the St. Paul Department of Safety & Inspections.
All work, including debris removal, is expected to wrap up by late spring, Humphrey said.
In January Frattalone enlisted Advanced Explosives Demolition to implode the ring beam at the Metrodome, which is being torn down to make way for the new $975 million Vikings stadium.
Frattalone is leading the Metrodome demolition, a project thats about 60 percent complete and on schedule for completion in April.
Unlike the Metrodome, which is being demolished with a combination of high-reach excavators, wrecking balls, and limited use of dynamite, Island Station and its smoke stack will be toppled primarily by explosives.
Though it could be chipped down or leveled with construction equipment, the building is a good candidate for implosion, according to national demolition consultant Herb Duane.
Its an old power plant on the river there; you just drop it and clean it up, said Duane, president of the Duane Corp., a New England-based demolition firm. Its a straightforward power plant demolition.

OLD CITY - March 13, 2014 (WPVI) -- Investigators from OSHA will be at demolition site in the Old City section of Philadelphia after a building, under demolition, collapsed on Thursday.
The collapse happened around 1:20 p.m. the site of the old Shirt Corner store at the intersection of 3rd and Market.
Witnesses say the demolition crew had been preventing traffic from going down 3rd Street, but they say pedestrians had been walking in the street right next to the fence that was crushed by the collapse.
At a news conference on Thursday, L&I Commissioner Carlton Williams said the project was a permitted demolition. The property was inspected on January 24th, Williams said, and it was declared dangerous.
That's when the owners were told to demolish the property.
Williams said L&I had inspectors on site every day during the demolition.
"On Saturday we actually got a call from the fire department who was concerned about the appearance. We went out and we actually moved the pedestrian walkway," said Williams. "We've been this project from the time it started and we've been staying on it ever since."
"We took every safety precaution in accordance with the mayor's executive order and the new demolition legislation to ensure pedestrian safety," said Williams.
Rob Molinaro was having lunch across the street when he decided to take a video of the work in progress.
He caught the dramatic moment when the upper wall collapsed outward, setting off a chain reaction.

Acoustic panels or other ceiling treatments can be replaced easily by a drywall ceiling, giving your room a more streamlined look.
Materials and Tools:
drywall lift straightedge ladders power drill utility knife hammer five-in-one painter's tool mud masher scrubber nail puller mud tray drywall knife carpenter's pencil gloves mask safety glasses sheets of drywall drywall mud drywall tape drywall screws
Steps:
1. Remove the old ceiling tiles and pull out any old nails. Scrape off any bumps of old adhesive using a utility knife and hammer. Make sure to wear safety goggles.
2. Remove any ceiling-mounted light fixtures. Turn the power off first, and check the fixture with a voltage detector to make sure it's off.
3. Use the straightedge to mark rows on the drywall for the screws. Fit the first piece of drywall in the drywall lift and hoist it into place. Start in the corner and work your way out.
4. Attach the drywall using drywall screws and a power drill. Space the screws about six to eight inches apart. If it's a shiplap ceiling (smooth wood panels), the screws can be attached anywhere. Otherwise, they would have to go into the center of the ceiling joists. Continue until all the drywall is installed.
6. Load up a tray with mud, whip it with the drywall knife until it's nice and soft. Start filling in the screw holes first.
7. Next start on the seams. Place a thick layer of mud on a seam, then center a piece of drywall tape along the seam. Cover the tape with a little more mud and smooth it out with your drywall knife.
