HARPER, Texas The Harper community has pulled together for a family that continues to stay strong through multiple obstacles, including losing their home in a fire.

It got so hot, the fire department couldnt pinpoint if it was a loose connection or faulty wiring, Amanda Bennett said. The kitchen island burned to the point where it was a pile of rubble.

A home fire has been minor compared to what the family has been through. Tim Bennett was injured in combat when fighting in Iraq in 2007. A military vehicle he was driving hit an improvised explosive device. Tim Bennett lived through the explosion despite having 70 percent of his body burned and losing his left arm.

The family moved to Harper after the incident so Bennett could live in close proximity to The Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio and the Kerrville VA Hospital for ongoing medical support.

The fire and the smoke was pretty hard on my husband, but luckily we werent there, and were all doing OK, Amanda Bennett said. Possessions can be replaced.

Feb. 19 had been a normal day for the Bennett family, filled with usual work, school and sports. Then, while driving down the street from the familys home, Amanda Bennett received a call saying her home was on fire.

We pulled up and the firefighters were there working on it, Bennett said. It was all gone.

In line with current emphasis on environmentally-friendly practices, symbols will be posted throughout the convention center to help visitors identify green exhibitors and learn more about sustainability and green living.

"We wanted to bring in themes that focus on the green aspects of building this year, including through renovation, retrofitting, new building, high efficiency and green products. We have an area we're calling the green mile that will focus on building green, but it will be a theme throughout the conference center," said Steve Chavira, director of the Las Cruces Home Builders, sponsors of the event.

About 3,000 attended last year's show, Chavira said.

Master Gardeners of Doa Ana County will be on hand to offer spring gardening advice, and it's none too soon.

Q My sister from Minnesota sent me a clipping of a Forum article (Jan. 11) in which you had a photo of pink paintbrush grass (Melinis nerviglumis Savannah).

I am interested in finding this grass, and Im wondering if it is available around the country. The soil here in Amish country is very rich. Would this grass do well here, or is it more of a prairie grass?

A I received much mail regarding the beautiful photo of the Savannah paintbrush grass taken at the North Dakota State University display gardens. It is native to Madagascar and the African grasslands.

Because it is hardy only to Zone 8, just the Deep South can consider it perennial. The rest of us across the United States can enjoy it as a beautiful annual grass attractive in flowerbeds and containers. It will do beautifully in Pennsylvania as it does across much of the country.

Rose-pink flowers/seedheads rise above slender blue-green grass foliage in an attractive, round clump. When blooming, the average height is 14 to 18 inches. Plants can be spaced 9 to 12 inches apart and full sun is preferred.

Seeds are easy to start indoors and should be planted 10 weeks before outdoor transplant date. A March 15 indoor seeding date will produce nice transplants by late May. Seeds are available through one of my favorite companies Park Seed http://www.parkseed.com.
