A long, cold, snowy Hoosier winter will be brought to a welcomed halt on March 8, when doors swing open to the 56th annual Indiana Flower & Patio Show.

This traditional harbinger of spring celebrates finer outdoor living with a myriad of inspirational features including the return of the Urban Homestead, Grill University, the all new Brew Bracket Backyard Brewfest, small space gardening, the Think Spring education stage, more than 400 expert exhibitors, and, of course, the gardens.

More than 40 Showcase and Featured Exhibitor Gardens to replicate at home, or simply to use as creative muse for your own outdoor space, will be the stars of the show again this year.

Personal Spaces is the theme of the 56th annual event. Landscape designers have been challenged to think outside the proverbial box and develop garden designs that best depict their view of finer outdoor living. The gardens will run the gamut from warm, cozy, intimate gathering spots to expansive entertaining areas.

Each will illustrate the latest in outdoor living: dramatic fire features; soothing ponds, streams and waterfalls; beautifully crafted structures; luxurious outdoor kitchens; trending patio furniture; plantings that engage all of the senses; new designs in hardscapes, and more.

The show runs from March 8 through 16 at the Indiana State Fairgrounds West Pavilion and Expo Hall, 1202 E. 38th St., Indianapolis.

Show hours are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, and 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday and Friday.

General admission is $13, with children ages 12 and younger being admitted free. A $3 downloadable coupon, and advance sale tickets, are available online at http://www.IndianaFlowerAndPatioShow.com. Discounted advance sale tickets also are available at all Indiana Marsh Supermarkets.

Senior Day is March 10, when admission for adults ages 65 and older is $9. Marsh Day is March 11, with giveaways, coupons and other goodies available at the show from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The shows first Brew Bracket Backyard Brewfest will feature local breweries such as Sun King, Flat 12, Oaken Barrel and more, sampling flights of favorite styles in a comparison tasting. ID will be required to enter the Brewfest area in the Expo Hall, and cost is $8 per person (the first sample flight of beer is included in the $8 charge). Brewfest hours are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, 3 to 7 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, and 3 to 9 p.m. Thursday and Friday.

ST. PETERSBURG --

A Shore Acres man says a clean-up project in his neighborhood is doing more harm than a good.

For the second day in a row, Kelly Andersen said hes spotted workers sandblasting paint from pipes along the 40th Avenue NE bridge and most of that paint, he said, has landed right in the water.

He even showed Bay News 9 pictures of Placido Bayou filled with paint chips from the construction project.

Contractors have been repainting the water pipes along the bridge for the last few months.

For some, the blue and pink colors may be pretty to look at but for Andersen, hes more concerned about the environmental impact.

Andersen grew up in St. Petersburg and loves anything outdoors.

One look outside his house and you can tell, he loves everything about the water, especially after having moved away for 20 years.

"St. Petersburg was home, Andersen said. The fishing just brought me back. Couldn't resist."

He loves watching the manatees, the pods of dolphins, and the fish but now more than ever hes concerned about them and their homes.

Dubai: A maid, who tried to kill her sponsors wife with a hammer because she feared losing her job, will spend five years in prison after she lost her appeal on Monday.

The 28-year-old Indonesian housemaid, Y.A., took advantage of the fact that her sponsors 33-year-old Jordanian wife was in bed when she pounded her head with a hammer intending to kill her.

The maid attempted to kill the victim in November 2012 because she was frightened of losing her job.

The Dubai Cassation Court turned down the defendants appeal to reduce her five-year jail term.

Presiding judge Mohammad Nabil Riyadh upheld the imprisonment against the maid.

According to Mondays irrevocable judgement, Y.A. will be deported following the completion of her punishment.

In September 2013, Court of First Instance jailed Y.A. for a year and fined her Dh1,000.

In December 2013, prosecutors appealed the verdict and asked the Appeal Court to stiffen the punishment. Meanwhile the accused appealed the court for a swifter punishment contending that she did not have any intention to kill the victim.

The appellate court stiffened the one-year imprisonment to five years in jail.

Court records said Y.A. decided to kill the Jordanian when she overheard her discussing the termination of her services the night before the incident.
