(BPT) - From genteel porches in the East to sleek, seaside balconies in the West, the popularity of outdoor living spaces is poised for significant growth from coast to coast with industry analysts predicting it will be a $5.7 billion market by 2016. Reinforcing these projections, 63 percent of architects cite an outdoor living space as the most popular special function room in housing construction, according to the American Institute of Architects. Melting snow has destroyed roofs and porches around the state. Now, Middle Smithfield Township has lost a building to a collapse.

A maintenance shed collapsed on the grounds of the township-owned golf course at Country Club of the Poconos on Wednesday morning. No one was working in or around the shed at the time of the collapse, according to township officials.

The shed was being used to store lawn mowing equipment used at the golf course, township Supervisor Annette Atkinson said Wednesday. It's not expected to delay the course from opening for the 2014 season.

"This is not going to affect our opening date at all," Atkinson said. "Fortunately it was just a storage building for equipment."

The full extent of the damage won't be known until the township clears the ice and snow from the site and begins removing the debris later this week.

Atkinson assured residents that there were no fertilizers or chemicals kept in the building that might affect groundwater in the area.

She said several area golf courses had seen the damaged shed and have offered their assistance.

To many Nicaraguans, this was home. To Ken Banks, it was a trip that would change his life forever.

"I didn't know what to expect," said Banks, a pastor at the Central Nova Wesleyan Church in Truro, who along with local church members, visited the country on a humanitarian mission trip in 2011.

"Being exposed to people who have nothing makes you realize how blessed we are, not because of anything we were doing, we just happened to be born here (in Canada)."

Their group's first project was to help build a church, which was a frail shell, when they arrived.

"When we went to the church it was a tin roof stuck up with poles, that's what they were using, it was open air," he said.

"What we did was dig trenches, build a foundation, mix cement by hand, a lot of old-school construction. We also helped fund a well," Banks said.

Fire crews respond Sunday, Feb. 9, 2014 to a four-alarm fire at 550 East 500 South in Salt Lake City.

SALT LAKE CITY When asked why he did it, the man accused of causing a four-alarm fire in downtown Salt Lake City told investigators, "Maybe I wanted to see the fire department."

A federal arson charge was filed Wednesday against Dustin Jay Bowman, 33, of Bountiful. Bowman is accused of intentionally setting a fire on Feb. 9 that destroyed a 64,000-square-foot apartment building under construction at 540 E. 500 South, causing an estimated $6 million in damage.

When interviewed by investigators, Bowman said he was at the construction site smoking Spice when he lit a crumpled piece of cardboard on fire and tossed it under a bathtub that was enclosed in a cardboard box and leaning against a wooden wall, according to the federal complaint.

"Bowman claimed if he intended to start a fire, then it was only to start a small fire, perhaps involving one or two apartments," the complaint stated.

Arson investigators confirmed that the fire started in a first floor apartment on the south end of the building.

Burning embers from the fire also damaged the roof of the nearby Smith's grocery store. The business suffered additional damage when it rained and water went through the damaged roof into the store, according to the federal charge.

The dental offices next to the construction site also suffered "substantial water and smoke damage," the report states.

Based on surveillance video gathered from nearby businesses, investigators believe Bowman first arrived at the construction site about 5:22 p.m on Feb. 9. By 5:45 p.m., a surveillance video camera recorded Bowman walking along 500 South away from the building, according to charging documents. At 5:46 p.m., smoke began rising from the building, according to the complaint.
