Superstar disc jockeys (DJs) are the new rock stars. That is one reason there are more DJ-ing courses offered in Singapore than in years past
Student Lucas Lee, 15, signed up for DJ lessons last July at Pop Trash at Peninsula Shopping Centre, and attends a class once every couple of weeks. "I play the drums, keyboards, trumpet and guitar, and I've always liked music. One day, I walked by the school and decided to sign up. Right now, I'm experimenting with deep house and electronica music."
Veteran DJ Ash Narayan, 43, who started DJ school Pop Trash in 2002, says: "It's a bit of a trend - being a DJ is like being the new rock star. I mean, you have people such as Grammy-winning English music producer Jamie XX and even British rock band Radiohead's Thom Yorke who are also DJ-ing."
With the rise of electronic dance music, a wave of aspiring DJs has hit the decks, hoping to follow in the footsteps of popular DJs and music producers such as French house DJ David Guetta, Dutch DJ Hardwell and Swedish house wunderkind Avicii.
There are now more than a dozen schools and instructors offering DJ-ing and electronic music production courses to people who want to master the craft as a hobby or who have dreams of spinning to hundreds in a nightclub.

CHHAPRA: Decks have been cleared for construction of a thematic park showing rise and fall of different civilizations at Chirand in Saran district.
Atul Verma, director, archaeological wing, department of art, culture and youth affairs, Bihar government, on Saturday said, "Land for this purpose has been acquired and the government has also sanctioned funds for this work." He was addressing a seminar on 'Saran ke Itihaas mein Chirand ka mahatwa' organized under the aegis of Chrand Vikas Parishad. Narrating the story of start of excavation at this place by the then drector V S Verma, he said initially the local people objected to the excavation work but allowed it after they were convinced.
"Without the cooperation of local people such works can't be taken up," said Atul Verma and added this excavation has changed the old concept that civilization existed only in hilly areas not in planes. He said the materials collected from here have proved the existence of Neolithic civilization in Gangetic plains during which bone-made tools were considered important. They are kept at the Patna Museum for exhibition. He said the state government has decided to organize 'Chirand Mahotsava' after a few months but such seminar would be organized every year with the help of Chirand Vikas Parishad. He also commented on the unauthorized construction in the protected area and said, "Such constructions would not only be demolished but those who have allowed it would be taken to task."
Unfair means at Inter exam: More than 40 examinees were expelled from Intermediate examination in Saran district on Saturday. Two invigilators, who were found helping some examinees, were also relieved from invigilation work. Intermediate examinations began at 47 centres at Chhapra for about 70,000 examinees, three centres at Marhoura for about 4,500 examinees and at five centres at Sonepur for about 6,500 examinees on Saturday. One of the examinees at Jaglal Rai centre was taken into custody as he was found playing the role of 'Munna Bhai'. He was identified as Karan Kumar and was taking examination in place of Sunil Kumar Sah.

The town of Craig is moving ahead with its plans to install a much needed community wastewater system.
Bids will be sought this summer, perhaps late June or in July, said Brad Koenig, the wastewater division manager with Robert Peccia & Associates, which is handling the projects design.
Construction on the system, currently estimated to cost $3,322,754, would begin soon after a contractor is selected and could be completed by the end of the year.
Some of the inside work may linger into early 2015, Koenig said.
The community is characterized by relatively small lots and homes and businesses that rely on septic systems for wastewater disposal and wells for drinking water.
We dont want the wastewater polluting the wells, said Anna Miller, a finance adviser with the Conservation and Resources Development Division at the state Department of Natural Resources and Conservation.
When septic system drainfields fail, there is not always enough room to construct replacement drainfields and still maintain an adequate distance from wells.
According to project documents provided by Miller, The community has a documented record of wells testing high for nitrates due to the sewer drainfield discharges into the shallow aquifer, which indicates well contamination from drainfield discharges.
This system should help that, Miller said.
The community started working with Peccia & Associates in May 2012 to plan for a wastewater system. Construction will be funded by both grants and a loan.

Wedged between railroad tracks and a freeway overpass, the Cathedral of the Holy Face of Christ the Savior has yet to find a congregation
Russia's President Vladimir Putin attends the Orthodox Christmas service at the Cathedral of the Holy Face of Christ the Savior in the Russian city of Sochi on Jan. 7, 2014
On Jan. 7, exactly a month before the Winter Games in Sochi began, Russian President Vladimir Putin stopped by the host citys new cathedral to attend Orthodox Christmas Mass. It seemed like a symbolic moment. In record time, Putins government had built an entire Olympic city, complete with stadiums, hotels, railroads and freeways, on a patch of swamp in Sochis suburbs. It was Putins little miracle, and what better place and time to celebrate than on Orthodox Christmas in Sochis new church? There were just a couple of problems.
The ornate Cathedral of the Holy Face of Christ the Savior, built mostly in the Byzantine style, was still under construction at the time. It had been consecrated only a few days earlier, before the altar had been assembled. And then there was the issue of its location. Wedged between railroad tracks and a freeway overpass, the church was nearly impossible for any locals to approach by foot without jumping fences and running across several lanes of traffic. So people had to be bussed in to stand behind Putin and his key Olympic managers during the Christmas Mass. With that, the cathedral served its first essential function a photo opportunity for Putin. But whom it will serve when the Olympics leave town is so far a bit of a mystery.
Theres an old Russian tradition that when you make a conquest of land, the first thing you do, before building a fort or a bathhouse, is build a church on top of it, says Vasily Gromov, an amateur historian and restorer of Orthodox churches in the region of Krasnodar, which includes Sochi. But this one doesnt make much sense.
On the second Sunday of the Olympics, Gromov, who is 76, came early to the evening Mass to voice some concerns to the priests. How could they put such a massive cathedral in a place where people cant get to it? I circled around for an hour before I figured out how to get here, says Gromov. There are fences and freeways everywhere, he says. Its like a maze! So he was not surprised to see the cathedral nearly deserted during the long evening service, with never more than a dozen parishioners at a time, most of them Olympic tourists. And whos going to come here when the Games are over? Gromov asks.

TIME put that question to the cathedrals abbot in January, a jolly old priest named Father Flavian, who is prone to bouts of giggling that make him place his hand over his mouth. He did not have any great answers. The church, he explained, was not really part of the original Olympic project; it was conceived as an afterthoughta year before the Games began, the holy icing on the Olympic cake. Its a miracle that we even built it in time, he said. We only had four months to cover the whole interior in frescoes, which is some kind of Olympic record! (Indeed, when two reporters visited on Jan. 17, workers on scaffolds were still painting the final touches.)
But with all the rush, few considered the placement of the church or its functionality. I know, its true, its really hard to get here, Father Flavian admitted. Were pretty much on an island. Then, as another fit of chuckles started coming on, he added, When I visit Moscow and the higher clergy asks me where Im from, I tell them I work out on the bogs.
That is technically true. Just like the stadiums hosting the Olympic Games, the church rests on marshlands in a suburb of Sochi called Adler, right on the Black Sea coast, and its lack of solid bedrock has bedeviled the organizers from the beginning. The ground was so moist and unstable that Olympic buildings had to be redesigned several times, contributing to the massive cost overruns that eventually brought the overall price tag to around $50 billion more than all the previous Winter Olympics combined.
