Rivertown seniors development in 2nd phase

    - February 9, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

COURTESY OF PRESBYTERIAN VILLAGES OF MICHIGAN

Presbyterian Villages of Michigan is in the midst of the second phase of development of Rivertown Neighborhood. An independent living apartment building (upper left) is under construction and expected to be completed in July. PVM plans to begin renovating an existing building on the site to provide an alternative to nursing home care.

Presbyterian Villages of Michigan is in the second phase of development at its $43.5 million Rivertown Neighborhood near Detroit's east riverfront.

After opening an affordable assisted living complex in one of two former Parke-Davis manufacturing facilities on the Detroit campus last spring, Southfield-based PVM and Chelsea-based United Methodist Retirement Communities Inc. began construction of a $7.5 million independent senior apartment building in the fall. The four-story, 50-unit building, which is just under 50,000 square feet, is expected to open in July.

The development, and existing Rivertown complex, is at McDougall Avenue and Franklin Street, two streets south of Jefferson Avenue.

PVM President and CEO Roger Myers

"The demand for that building has been the greatest we've ever seen," said PVM President and CEO Roger Myers.

More than 300 people have expressed interest in living there, but PVM won't begin taking applications until late March, he said.

With a $2 million grant from the Baltimore-based Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation in hand, PVM is getting ready to begin renovations on a second existing building on the site in August.

The 20,000-square-foot building, adjacent to the assisted living center, will be home to the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Green Houses on its upper floors. An alternative to nursing home care, the houses will provide a home-like setting, with 10-12 private rooms for senior citizens, a communal kitchen and living areas, social programming and 24-hour nursing care. PVM plans to put a cafe on the ground floor.

Blaze breaks out in building under construction in Salt Lake City

    - February 9, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Another image from a construction fire in Salt Lake City near 550 E. 500 South, Sunday, Feb 9, 2014.

    Mindy Hatch

SALT LAKE CITY An entire apartment building under construction at 550 E. 500 South went up in flames, Sunday.

Flames from the building shot up 150 feet. Salt Lake City Fire Department responded with four alarms.

No one was in the building when the fire started. The fire was upgraded to four-alarm shortly before 6:30 p.m.

Around 6:45, nearby homes and a Smith's Marketplace across the street were evacuated. There was concern embers from the fire were landing on nearby rooftops.

The Utah Department of Transportation sent out a tweet saying 500 South was closed from 400 East to 500 East. That road closure could stay in effect throughout the night.

Almost 100 firefighters responded to the fire. The Red Cross is on scene to provide relief for those firefighters.

Smoke and flames from the fire could be seen across the valley, and some witnessed embers shooting out from the building for several feet. As of 7:30 p.m., the fire was under control and smoldering.

Updates will be posted when available.

People in Power Snatched Rights of Dalits: Modi

    - February 9, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Narendra Modi today accused Congress of following a divide and rule policy for the last 60 years and recalled the setting up of a Commission on Religious and Linguistic Minorities by its government as an instrument to "sow the seeds of poison".

Wooing the Dalits and backward classes at a public meeting here, Modi also alleged there has been a "conspiracy" to snatch the rights given to the community by B R Ambedkar against the backdrop of suggestion by Congress leader Janardan Dwivedi for ending caste-based reservation.

The BJP Prime Ministerial candidate called himself "victim of untouchability", saying Cochin city mayor Tony Chammany did not attend the meeting though his name was among those listed on the invitation card.

"I continue to be a victim of untouchability," he said.

Alleging that Congress had sought to make gains by dividing the society by sowing 'poisonous seeds", he said the dalits, adivasis and backward classes would have a decisive say if his party was voted to power. There would be a "change of government" at the Centre within 100 days after which this would be brought to an end, he added.

Modi promised that once he comes to power at the Centre, he would like to do something for his "family", pointing towards the crowd at the meeting. "The forthcoming decade will belong to the members of the marginalised community."

"For the past 60 years, people have indulged in vote bank politics to divide and rule. This has led to our division and fragmentation. They are experts in zeher ki kheti. The Ranganath Mishra Commission was set up to sow the seeds of poison," he told the meeting organised by the Kerala Pulayar Maha Sabha (KPMS), an outfit of a prominent Scheduled Caste community.

The Ranganath Misra Commission was constituted by the UPA government on October 29. 2004 to look into various issues related to Linguistic and Religious minorities.

In its report submitted to the Government on May 21, 2007, the Commission among other things recommended 10 per cent of jobs for Muslims and five per cent for other minorities in government services and seats in educational institutions for minorities.

On a visit to Karnataka last week, UPA chairperson and Congress president Sonia Gandhi had launched an attack on the opposition BJP accusing it of indulging in 'zeher ki kheti' (sowing seeds of poison) to attain power.

Four Arts panel examines American style

    - February 9, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

If youre searching for a piece of furniture that perfectly exemplifies American style, look no further than the rocking chair, interior decorator Thomas Jayne said Thursday during a panel discussion at The Society of the Four Arts.

It conveys comfort and hospitality, he said. It appears on the rich persons porch and on the poor persons porch.

It also was invented in the United States an example of the sort of American creativity, and lack of pretense, that was a recurring theme during the discussion, titled American Genius: What is American Style?

Jayne joined culinary historian Jessica B. Harris and American culture writer Julia Reed on the panel, which was moderated by Four Arts President Ervin Duggan in the newly renovated Gubelmann Auditorium.

What is distinctive about us? We are a nation of nations, forged from many streams of culture, Duggan said. We are a people who trace our origins to many, many traditions.

The panelists all agreed that this melting pot of cultural influences has helped to define American style in several areas, including cuisine, social manners and decorating. The last topic was an especially prominent focus of the discussion.

Jayne, who runs Jayne Design Studio in New York City, noted that, more often than not, Americans want comfortable homes that capture their individual personalities. They also want to be surrounded by things they enjoy.

Americans value comfort, and they value eclecticism, he said. They have the luxury of having almost anything they want in their home.

Decorations dont all have to be expensive, he added. In his home, for example, Jayne has combined items of high pedigree and some less so. He also pointed to the home of one of his former mentors, the late decorator Albert Hadley of Parish-Hadley Associates, who also surrounded himself with the things he loved, whether valuable or not.

In America, you can have a fine room without a tremendous outlay, Jayne said.
