Families have revealed how rats have made their lives a misery as Cambridge council chiefs prepare to axe their pest control team.

The infestation victims are unable to get help because other local authorities have already sacked their rat catchers and fear for Cambridge residents if the city council follows suit this week.

Sonja King, of Providence Way, Waterbeach, had rats in her house throughout 2013 and could not afford the 400 quote from a private contractor after learning South Cambridgeshire District Council had closed its service.

She said the largest one was 18in long from head to tail.

The 52-year-old said: During the summer we spent hours of our time, stressed, frustrated and being kept awake night after night which had an effect on my health catching and killing rats. We have caught 15 to date and they are back.
