CANTON, Ohio - Melanie Crowl was hoping to repair a plumbing leak in the basement of her Canton home, but the plumber she hired took her money and never finished the job.

Crowl explained how she and her husband were left without water service for more than a week after her plumber left her water system leaking and partially disassembled.

"I never thought this would happen to me. Unfortunately, I'm just an over-trusting person," Crowl said.

"All the pipes were leaking. They weren't put together right. It just was a mess. "When we had the second plumber come in, he said none of it was right."

Crowl showed NewsChannel5 the small hand written receipt she was given after she claims she paid the plumber $600 up front. The plumber was listed in the classified section of the Canton newspaper under plumbing and remodeling, and boasted low rates.

Donald Crowl asked the plumber some of the right questions as he was lining up the services over the phone.

"'Are you licensed, bonded and insured?' The plumber said 'Yes I am,'" Donald Crowl said. "When he got here I asked him 'Can I see your credentials?' He said 'I don't have them with me.'"

Crowl told NewsChannel5 the plumber identified himself as "Tom" from Plumbing and Home Services, but Crowl never got the plumbers last name.

The Crowls and NewsChannel5 have been trying to reach the company by phone, but all calls have gone unanswered and the company voicemail box has been full for the past three days.

Finally, the family had to hire a second plumber for more than $400 just to restore water service to their home.
