I want to become a plumber and having looked into it I have decided the best thing to do is to be able to work with boilers and heating.

I understand this means I need to be Gas Safe. What does that mean and how can I train?

Prospects: Gas Safe registered plumbers are often in-demand and can get plenty of work

Amy Andrew, of This is Money, replies: A Gas Safe registered plumber is what people previously knew as a Corgi registered one.

It means a person is qualified to work on gas systems, which in most cases mean domestic gas-powered boilers.

Carrying out gas services can be dangerous in the wrong hands, with the main danger being carbon monoxide poisoning. This can occur if a device is installed, serviced or repaired by someone who doesn't know what they are doing.

Every year people die because of carbon monoxide poisoning. A quick search through health and safety records will bring up prosecutions against engineers that have carried out poor or dangerous work, which in most cases means they have broken the law.

To guard against this, any plumber that would like to expand their range of expertise to cover gas systems need to be fully qualified.
