Aaron Lueth, Owner, Lueth Plumbing and Heating had a few recommendations to keep people's home's warm and safe.

"Utilize your plumbing more go to the faucets flush the toilets a couple extra times do some extra loads of laundry. By utilizing the fixtures were allowing the water to flow so were keeping the water lines functional but also the drain lines," said Lueth.

Something many people have been told to do is to let their faucets and showers drip to keep the pipes from freezing but that's not the case.

"What can happen is it will drip freeze drip freeze so if you are going to run the water you need to run a pencil sized stream. If you don't have that continuous flow you could be setting yourself up for more problems," said Lueth.

A different way to get exercise and insulate your home is to shovel snow onto your foundation to keep your home insulated and prevent drafts.

"Start baking cookies and things, by utilizing that extra heat source your putting more BTUs into your space and allowing extra heat throughout the building," said Lueth.

If people do have to leave home in tough weatherBrian Roth, Owner, Roth Certified Auto Repair recommendscarrying a charged jumper pack because the cold drains the car battery.

"Make sure to get your car battery tested during routine maintenance, another general rule of thumb is if your battery is over 7 years old it could go out at any time," said Roth.

Another tip to be cognizant of is to monitor tire pressure and the treads.

"Just looking at it to see whether or not the side wall is sagging, there's a copper penny trick where you put the head of Abraham Lincoln upside down and if you see part of his head usually time for tires," said Roth.

One final winter preparation tips is if a car becomes stuck in the snow sprinkle cat litter under the tire to gain traction and don't forget to be prepared for the unexpected.
