A PLUMBER who was speeding to get to an emergency gas leak has been fined 300 and had six points put on his licence.

Kevin Marley was clocked doing 54mph in a 30mph limit on the A68 at Fir Tree near Crook, County Durham shortly before 9am on May 10, magistrates in Newton Aycllife were told.

Marley, 54, of Northbridge Park in St Helen Auckland near Bishop Auckland sent a letter to the court in which he pleaded guilty to exceeding the speed limit.

The court heard that police officer recorded Marleys Nissan Primastar van as it passed through Fir Tree.

In his letter to the court, Marley said he had been rushing after receiving reports of a gas escape in Stanhope, in Weardale.

It turned out to be a false alarm, the court heard.

Marley said his mind was on other things and he had not been aware of his speed as he passed through the 30mph zone.

The court heard he already has three points on his licence which he received for speeding in 2011.
