A WESTERN Sydney neighbourhood was evacuated after a plumber was lured to a vacant home and assaulted before his ute - carrying cylinders of acetylene - was set on fire yesterday.

Police, fire and ambulance crews rushed to the Lethbridge Park home about 8am after reports the 20-year-old tradesman, who has not been identified, had been ambushed and kicked and punched in the face by two men.

Police said he had been lured to the property by a mystery caller who rang on Thursday and asked for him to attend the home and carry out plumbing works.

The ambush happened as the plumber walked into the backyard of the housing commission property.

Minutes after the assault, his attackers set fire to the man's Toyota Hilux ute, which was parked in the driveway of the property, before fleeing.

Police Inspector Rebecca Beecroft from the Mt Druitt local area command told The Daily Telegraph the man suffered lacerations and bruises.

She said police were investigating who had made the call to the plumber.

Police said no description of the offenders was available.
