Suspected car thief found hiding in Broomfield back yard on Friday

A suspected car thief was arrested in the McKay Landing neighborhood in Broomfield on Friday. Police said Michael D. Corp, 26, also was seen walking on to porches and attempting to look into homes. He was found by a K-9, hiding in a back yard.

Police around 4:15 p.m. Friday responded to a report that an older model black BMW was driving slowly through the neighborhood and looked "out of place." The first responding officer saw an unoccupied, older model black BMW parked on Fairwind Lane, according to a news release issued Monday by police. A check of the license plate revealed the vehicle was stolen from Northglenn, taken Friday morning after the owner left it running and unattended.

In talking with neighborhood residents, police learned the driver of the BMW, described as a tall, white man, was seen walking up on to porches and trying to look inside houses, according to the news release. He was then seen running down a bike path.

Officers set up a perimeter in the area and Corp was found by a K-9, hiding in a back yard on McKay Park Circle.

Meanwhile, a resident of the 14000 Block of Zuni Street reported several packing boxes had been dumped in the driveway by a man in a black BMW. Several packing boxes with shipping labels to locations in Thornton were recovered, according to police. Police discovered the boxes and their contents were inside the stolen BMW.

Corp is being held at the Broomfield County jail. He faces possible charges of motor vehicle theft, theft and obstruction. His bond was set at $1,500.

Police said the arrest was not connected to a false report made Friday by a 16-year-old boy who said he was approached by two men in a dark BMW who demanded he get in their car. Police issued a news release about the reported attempted abduction on Friday and followed up with a second release that evening explaining that the boy's account was a false report.
