MASON CITY | Home improvement TV host Paul Ryan offered tips to those who attended the Home and Landscaping Show at the North Iowa Events Center Saturday.

Ryan, who hosts shows on the DIY Network and has also appeared on the Food Network, TLC and HGTV,demonstrated how to cut drywall, do wall and floor tiling and solder copper pipe during a seminar titled "Remodeling 101 -- That's How It's Done."

He told the audience to lower their expectations when doing home improvement projects.

"There are always going to be surprises, gang," he said.

If you don't expect things to go perfectly, you won't be disappointed when there are problems, and if things go smoothly, it will be a pleasant surprise, Ryan said.

He also showed the audience the tools that will make home remodeling go easier.

Ryan said it's important to have a tape measure with a one-inch-wide blade so someone else doesn't have to hold the other end.

"Drills have come a long way," he said, noting these days they not only have different speeds but different adjustments.

Ryan said a drill driver can help you put screws in larger materials, such as when you are building a deck.

A speed square can help you make a nice, square cut, he said.
