Interior Renovations Confirmed for Old Evansville Post Office

A piece of history in Evansville has been getting a facelift on its exterior. Now, the downtown icon will also see some changes inside the building.

Over recent months the city funded renovations for new roofing, painting, and window replacement to the old post office. Now, construction will be taking place inside the walls.

The Evansville Redevelopment Commission says a division of social security offices will be put in the building. And the city has agreed to pay up to $1 million of subsidy for the project.

President of the the Redevelopment Commission Ed Hafer says it's important to keep Evansville's historic structures functioning.

"It's a historic building that the city owns," said Hafer, "and certainly wants to preserve as part of our heritage it keeps and adds to jobs downtown which are an important part of it all."

A contractor for the project should be selected near the beginning of January, and the offices should be open in May or June.
