PHOENIX -- A roofing job turned hazardous Tuesday when a swarm of bees attacked a roofing crew. One worker was stung up to 40 times.

It happened near Tatum and Cave Creek, as the roofers worked on a home. Even worse, the crew had only one ladder to make their escape.

"We were over here working," explains Gary Watson of Hayes Roofing. "My guys called me and said there were some bees, so we got some soapy water and started spraying them, and they attacked us. They attacked all five of us."

Watson says spraying the bees just made them angrier. And his employees were right in their line of attack.

"it was scary. I've never seen bees act like that. They were on us," Watson says. " I probably got stung 20 times."

Firefighters doused the belligerent bees with soapy water, knocking them down, but not before one of the roofers became ill from so many stings.
